Could you introduce yourself?
My name is Mike Fleming and I’m from the UK
What’s the meaning behind the name?
Okkvlt Katt is like a depiction of inner strength in troubled times. Okkvlt, meaning ‘hidden’, Katt is the ‘inner beast’.
Where do you find your inspiration?
Many things, I mostly draw from emotions, experience and imagery. I’m a very visual person when it comes to any form of art.
What interested you in the genre of Witch House?
Witch House just speaks to me on many levels. The otherworldly atmospheres are one aspect, plus the sound is just so different in effect to other forms of music, like you don’t always need words to convey an emotion, the music can do this all by itself.
How do you feel about the current rise of underground culture, making more of an impact today?
I believe it’s a reaction to the oversaturation of pop culture. There’s always been a yearning in humanity for mystique, for something elusive. Pop music for example, is generally very basic in its approach. Typically, the mantra is ‘sex sells’, overexposure to anything leads to desensitization I believe. Also the fact that most modern pop music sounds the same. Witch House is also the first major internet based genre, so this is still uncharted territory really.
Where do you see your music in a year?
I’m always looking to grow and learn new skills. I feel like I’ve grown a lot this year alone, so 2015 will be fascinating. Since becoming part of the Witch House scene, I’ve had to stop thinking too much about the future and stay open to new possibilities. I’ve basically become a ‘yes man’. There’s always something you never expected to happen. I think staying open to any new opportunity is vital.
If you had to describe your work in five words, what would they be?
Dark, Night, Of, The, Soul.
What other plans do you have for this year?
The release of the third installment of the Spirit Box series will be coming soon. This series is about me finding my own sound, the direction I want to take. To listeners, maybe there isn’t a massive change sonically, but I feel it charts how I’ve changed as a person over the past year.
Finding music that just takes me by surprise, gives me goosebumps always makes me happy. Whether it’s a happy sound or sad. I’m pretty cathartic really. I find happiness in pain somehow. Therapeutic in some ways I guess
