Terrance Tao talks somewhere, maybe in a blog post, about the difficulty that some mathematicians have when growing out of the rigorous and into the post-rigorous phase of their education. In particular, published math papers are full of cases where e.g. a proof doesn’t actually prove the exact statement of a theorem, or something is referred to as an X when it doesn’t technically meet the strict definition of X, etc., and this sometimes trips up mathematicians early in their career—they “fail to compile” while reading the paper, to use Tao’s words.
What they often don’t realize, though, is that if they kept reading the paper and thought about the broader ideas involved, they would realize these “errors” are more like minor hiccups. The proof may not actually prove what the lemma was stated to be, but it does prove something else, close enough, that turns out to work out fine in the place in the main proof where the lemma is used. Maybe a given object doesn’t meet the strictest definition of an X, but it turns out to just be some packaging of the information required to define an X, and everything is ok.
Part of mathematical maturity, argues Tao, is being able to detect these hiccups and correct for them yourself, so that you can understand the content the paper is actually trying to get at.
Anyway. Many people online (myself included, of course) sometimes “fail to compute” in this same way when reading posts. And I think this is worth watching out for.
