Thinking about Arthur Shappey getting older, staying much the same, but getting really into the idea of taking over the running of OJS Air, turning all his thirst for knowledge to really paying attention to how Carolyn does it (with Douglas’ help, of course)
ok sorry but I’ve been having a lot of thoughts about this recently so here we go:
Carolyn at first doesn’t know what’s gotten into him because sure Arthur’s always loved MJN, but look at Fitton - he doesn’t have a clue how it works. But then he starts getting involved, asking how Carolyn sets out her spreadsheets and what to put on a business card and how to work the printer. (Carolyn can’t say she isn’t grateful for the help, even if she’d never admit to needing it)
Carolyn starting to involve him in every part of the process and one day he finds that he’s no longer just Arthur, Steward, but Arthur, Managing Director and he bursts into the portakbin to tell Martin and Douglas because it is BRILLIANT.
Douglas and Martin helping him out - Douglas giving him tips on how to be organised and how to pay attention to important stuff, and Martin explaining bits of the pilot’s jobs to him, because Arthur is interested in all the parts of their company and not just the managerial side, and even if Martin isn’t always there he can still help explain things.
Arthur demanding that Douglas do a flight plan one day, and Douglas complying. He realises just how difficult Carolyn’s job must have been to get him organised for all these years. She couldn’t be prouder.
Herc, after Arthur shyly asks, helping Arthur to find a new, managerial suit because he feels that if he’s going to be more helpful as a manager - and there is nothing Arthur loves more than being helpful - he needs to look more the part. Herc of course helps, and is fully supportive and is proud of him like a son. Carolyn knows this, and is delighted that Herc is helping, and that Arthur is taking it seriously. Herc knows she is too proud to admit she needs help.
Arthur inventing an interview and conducting them to hire a new steward to go on all the flights, because it’s becoming rare that Carolyn does and Arthur feels that as Head Steward he should have someone to be the Not-Head Steward. Carolyn leaves him to it, knowing he’ll find someone optimistic, if a bit slow. She trusts him, because it’s Arthur and he’s put the effort in recently to be genuinely helpful.
There haven’t been any code reds for some time. Arthur feels there really ought to be, as he sits alone and updates his business card, typing the words ‘Arthur Shappey, CEO’.
AAAAAAAAARGH THIS. THIS IS PERFECT. Thank you both for making it so wonderful!
Douglas: Arthur, tell Herc where he can stick his fruit tray.
Arthur: In the fridge.
Douglas: No, Arthur.
Carolyn: Arthur, a word?
Arthur: Balloon!
I’m desperately trying to get to draw Arthur and like the result, but I fear it will take way more time than expected… In the meantime, here’s a random Arthur in a yellow raincoat at a supposed to be bus stop (or at least that’s what they look like in my tiny stupid village where if a bus stop has a roof and two pieces of plexiglass to protect you from the weather you can consider yourself a lucky person xD)
Once you start drawing Arthurs, it’s kind of sad to stop.
Ms. Shappey here to let you know that Trans is BRILLIANT. Atlanta Pride 2016~
it’s a lemon
This, ladies and gentlemen, is how you combine “Yellow Car” with “Travelling Lemon”
If you aren’t familiar with the british radio sitcom Cabin Pressure, bear with me a moment; i think this message is something important and worth thinking about.
So there’s this character who’s incredibly cheery and bubbly 24/7, Arthur. And this dialogue occurs:
DOUGLAS: Oh, well, come on. No-one’s truly happy. ARTHUR: I’m truly happy! MARTIN: Oh God. DOUGLAS: No, Arthur; you are cheery. No-one’s interested in the secret of true cheeriness. ARTHUR: No, that’s not true. I’m fairly often just completely happy. Like, for instance, when you get into a bath quickly and it’s just the right temperature, and you go … (blissfully) … “Ohhhh!” I mean, no-one really gets any happier than that. MARTIN: What a depressing thought. ARTHUR: No! No, it’s not, though! Because those sort of things happen all the time, whereas you’re hardly ever – you know – blissfully happy with the love of your life in the moonlight; and when you are, you’re too busy worrying about it being over soon. Whereas the bath moments – there’s loads of those! Oh! Like when you realise your knuckles are ready for cracking.
And like
I think about this a lot, because while Arthur is mostly just a comedic character, I think that there’s something I relate to & that’s really good in the way that he views the world? Like, the world is such a better place when you take time to notice all of the good things, the little and seemingly insignificant things.
I just. I think that this is such an important message, and I don’t think it;s talked about nearly often enough. Because even if we’re not having many lovers-in-the-moonlight moments, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t little good things in life to be happy about.
Douglas: Rules are made to be broken, Martin.
Martin: They were made to be followed. Nothing is made to be broken.
Douglas: Uh, pinatas.
Arthur: Glowsticks.
Douglas: Karate boards.
Arthur: Spaghetti when you have a small pot.
Douglas: Rules.
Tell us why Arthur Shappey is Good and Pure? :D
arthur shappey is the personification of Good and Pure honestly
names dog ‘snoopadoop’
fairly often just completely happy
wants everyone else to be happy too. entirely open about this, unlike all the others, who kinda want other people to be happy but are Affectionately Mean and don’t very often openly admit that they like each other.
very good at being teased; terrible at teasing. it’s nice to have a fictional role model who is just as good at being mocked as i am. (i mean i’m better than arthur at teasing back, but u kno.)
“i won’t say anything, i’ll just be really excited!!”
pretty much everything he says comes with an implied exclamation mark
:)
Just a friendly reminder that I reblog a lot of the Arthur Shappey-related stuff I see on my dash, but I also accept submissions! Feel free to tag me in your posts or make submissions if you want!
Oh Arthur, how we all adore you :P

Why is Arthur shappey a ravenclaw?
oh my god I’m so glad you asked me this let me write you an essay
So, I almost always see Arthur sorted as a hufflepuff, and that’s valid, I can see that. But, I really think that’s an oversimplification both of his character and of what it means to be a hufflepuff.
(Full disclosure- I’m a ravenclaw and am probably biased, but I’ve always loved and respected Hufflepuff.)
Hufflepuff is hard work, fairness, loyalty, justice, right? Do we see much of that in Arthur? He loves his family and MJN, he loves making other people happy, but I’ve never seen him too concerned about right versus wrong. Nor does he seem all that interested in working hard. Arthur Shappey is kind but I think it’s a mistake to conflate Hufflepuff values with kindness. I think there’s a trend of putting people who aren’t very brave or ambitious or smart, but are kind or happy, in Hufflepuff, and I disagree with that.
So, why Ravenclaw? Obviously, Arthur isn’t that intelligent. To me, being a ravenclaw is about being curious, inquisitive, and finding joy in learning. A person’s actual abilities are somewhat irrelevant. This is true of any of the Houses; you go to Gryffindor for valuing bravery, or Hufflepuff for valuing fairness. (This is how Peter Pettigrew wound up in Gryffindor. He admired bravery, but in the end, couldn’t live up to his values.)
One of Arthur’s biggest features, that seems to always get glossed over, is his relentless curiosity. How often does his plot for an episode center on Arthur trying to learn something? (Polar bears, Timbuktu, the phonetic alphabet, what’s in the box, how to lie convincingly, and how airplanes fly immediately come to mind.) He loves flying because he gets to see new people and new places. He’s jealous of Max for going to school. He’s so proud of himself in Timbuktu for “ruining everything with his knowledge and erudition.”
To me, when I sit down to seriously think about it, Arthur’s character screams Ravenclaw.
