“The American past reads like something of a horror movie, maybe even a low-budget slasher. American history comes at us dripping with gore, victims lying scattered on the ground, eldritch moonlight revealing creeping horrors you never learned from your eighth grade history textbook. The history of the United States offers a chamber of horrors, with clergy transforming the Native American other into demonic beings, mad scientists turning state-funded laboratories into torture chambers, and the photographic revolution of the Victorian era turning towards a morbid fascination with the bodies of the dead and the creation of the category of “gore.“ History is horror.”

DASHBOARD UNFUCKER V1.0
as 90% of desktop users have probably found out, today @staff released an update that for some insane reason COMPLETELY remodels the dashboard to replicate twitter's. this is of course in the wake of numerous other thoroughly hated changes and a continued refusal to fix any of the site's actual problems, half of which stem directly from site management.
HOWEVER, thanks to the power of jQuery, i was able to throw together a userscript that remodels the dashboard back to its original look almost perfectly.
here is my dashboard right now, with the script active:
and here is the old dashboard in separate tab container that hasn't received the update:
it's hardly perfect; i had trouble making it force reload to the fixed layout when switching between other pages and the dashboard, and it currently only fixes just the dashboard. it's also completely untested on browsers other than firefox, and chances are it looks a bit screwy on ultrawide monitors. but for now at least, it's a good fix.
the unfucker is a tampermonkey userscript. all you have to do to use it is install the tampermonkey extension, hit "create new script", and replace the default code on the page with the script (link here) and save it.
i will probably make a more robust "hey, i'm back!" post, but -- hey, i'm back! i missed this account dearly, but i've finally got my brain sorted + am trying to get back on track (please, universe, let my advisor email me back soon) so...yes. hello. i missed you all and hope you are doing well and treating yourself kindly
it has been … eleven months? since i posted on this account. and like, an unbelievable amount of things have happened, but the biggest one is i got kicked out of university.
or—not kicked out, i guess. asked to take a leave of absence. i had to unenroll for the year and will be permitted to return as a full time student in september 2023. it blows. it fucking blows. it’s completely my fault, of course (i let things stand in my way) and now my future at grad school is potentially slipping away, but—but. i’m not giving up.
i have the opportunity to do better, now. to read more; to develop better habits. they’re permitting me to take 2 classes starting in january; i might do that. ease back into it.
in any case, i’m going to try to use this account more. i think there’s still such a complex around studyblr, and perspectives like this (from people who aren’t perfect students) might be interesting. so, look out for me! i’m excited to be back :)
if you can tell by my lack of to-do lists lately, i really haven’t been motivated by school or academia in the past few weeks. in turn, i’ve fallen quite behind. but!!!! i told myself last night that starting today, i’m getting excited and motivated again. i’m falling back in love with my education. and you know what? the manifestation is kind of working!!! so, a to-do for this weekend!!
