The Protagonist of Tokyo Ghoul

- Tokyo Ghoul:re chapter 179 spoilers; TLDR at bottom -

Some people might be confused/angry/happy with the ending of the Tokyo Ghoul series. But perhaps Sui Ishida had alluded to this good ending (the best as it can get in this series, anyways) from the very beginning.

This quote - “if ... you were to write a story with me in the lead role, it would certainly be a tragedy” - poses a big if. Sure, in the beginning half of the series, the story is a tragedy; Kaneki turns into a ghoul, gets tortured, loses his acquaintances, etc. But why does the story end on a good note?

The story begins to take a favorable turn after Hide, the missing character whom we all thought was dead, swoops in. The ghouls and investigators form an alliance to defeat the corrupt CCG, an idea that Kaneki always has dreamed of. At the very end of chapter 179, it is revealed that Hide is the son of a deceased CCG investigator. Why is this somewhat insignificant fact announced at the conclusion of the series, uncovering the hidden history of our bright, yellow-haired character?

Perhaps this is because Hide is the lead role. It might not be too much of a stretch to assume that Hide, who saved Kaneki with his flesh when his friend was crazed during the fight with Arima and was a key factor in connecting humans with ghouls, is an extremely important character in the story - maybe even the most important figure after Kaneki.

As bright and quick-witted Hide is, his story would definitely be a happy one.

TLDR: While Kaneki’s story may be a tragedy, Hide’s is a happy story :)

Kaneki the King

Tokyo Ghoul Chapter Six, most people interpret Nishiki’s taunt here quite literally. He calls him the “King of Fakes” as in ‘Faker’ or somebody who pretends to be something he’s not.

There is however, a secondary meaning to this reference. Maybe it’d become more obvious if Nishiki had called him Kanekkius Rex, or Kanedipus Tyrannus.

Calling Kaneki the King of Fakes, ties him to another tragic king whose life was centered around a big lie, which slowly unraveled around him as his story progressed. There’s a connection, between this modern tragedy and classical greek tragedy, Oedipus Rex.

Kaneki just says age does not matter, funny how you twist it into kaneki likes older women thing

first of all anon I have a feeling you are the same passive aggressive anon from a few weeks ago and I don’t appreciate the attitude. There’s a difference between being critical and being rude, and you are being the latter. My blog is purely for fun, and if you have a problem with anything I state you can IM me and stop hiding behind an anon, thank you.

And Kaneki liking older women does hold extreme significance in TG considering the fact that he has an Oedipus complex, you can read this meta here by @linkspooky to understand it more.

His Oedipus complex mostly refers to women that actually resemble his mother by having the following traits:

Glasses

Beautiful

Cruel

Thinking them strong until he realizes it is a facade

And I suppose you could add reading/books since he did read his father’s books when he was younger (and if the anime followed Ishida’s suggestions during this scene, Kaneki’s mother did help him read) There of course are other traits that I’m skimming over but honestly I don’t want to list them

The mothers in TG are generally depicted as cruel and ruthless but incredibly strong women (Rize, Eto, Big Madame, etc), while the fathers are shown as gentle and caring, but due to some mis-parenting/bad morale they majorly fuck up their kid(s) (Arata, Mirumo, Yoshimura, etc).

So Rize and Eto fit the check, but Akira does not (she’s like the cool god-mother who appeared out of nowhere and is the perfect parent for Haise bless her soul and hugs). Which kind of brings me to my next point about how Arima could be a representation of both the paternal and maternal instincts that created Haise Sasaki.

Every time Kaneki endures a traumatic event, it seems that he ends up embodying the quote from a piece of artwork Ishida did:

“Body of the mother, mind of the father”

Post-operation: Rize and Yoshimura. Kaneki struggled with controlling his hunger and random spikes of violence, but Yoshimura had him keep a peaceful mind with non-violent tendencies and a possible chance to unite humans and ghouls together (Yoshimura’s dream)

Post-Aogiri: Rize and Yamori: He displays her strength (which is actually his own but he doesn’t know that) and binge eating activities, he has to live with Yamori’s aftershocks and has the “get stronger to survive and protect” mentality

Post-v14: Arima. Gonna explain below but it most likely has a lot to do with whatever happened during post V14 and Haise’s care

Post Lunar: Eto and seemingly Arima again. Hope I don’t need to explain this one

So that leaves me with Arima. Arima is very… gender ambiguous (take off your Western lens and put on your Japanese lens) as he isn’t overtly masculine, nor is he as effeminate as Haiseneki is.

Arima does seem to fit the maternal traits that Haisneki usually ends up finding himself attracted to: glasses, beautiful, dangerous, powerful (not necessarily romantic since he doesn’t have a romantic association with Eto)

But while Arima does fit the cruel maternal aspects of TG, he also fits the paternal’s gentle and caring but “whoops-messed-up-my-kid” aspects as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if in whatever lab/hospital they kept Haise in after v14 Arima showed kindess and some form of empathy, but also gave his blunt, no-socialization warnings to Haise about how if he can’t control himself, he will be of no use. Not as a threat, but as a warning since I’m pretty sure Arima is in the same boat as him since the guy has no autonomy in the CCG alongside a few other things

This of course led to Haise’s fear of being disposed that the current Kaneki is no longer afraid of.

So basically: Arima is the mom and dad that made Haise, lucky guy.

This is probably why we haven’t seen a whole lot on Arima in :re since Arima and Kaneki have one of the most important/unique relationships in the series, and Ishida is planning to elaborate on this aspect later on in :re

Welp, I got all that out I guess, I’ve been wanting to talk about Arima/Arima and Kaneki’s relationship forever and I finally got a chance to do so, and I got to talk about the Oedipus complex all because you were rude anon, so thank you~

So we see here that Haise/Kaneki is marking the calendar and stops at ‘20′. I’ve checked the actual calendar and it seems that the only month with this after November that has an aligned in the middle of the week 20 and 27 is December 2016. December 2015′s 20 was on a Sunday.

I can’t really say for sure but the manga might either be on November 20 or December 20 at the moment.

About the One-Eyed King

After the release of TG:re chapter 61, there’s been a lot of debate and confusion on who the one-eyed king is, among other things: here are my thoughts on it. There are spoilers ahead if you didn’t read the latest chapter. TL;DR at the bottom.

First of all, let’s start with before :re. Every clue/characters’ rumors point to Eto being the One-Eyed Owl, who consequently is the One-Eyed King. I don’t think that Ishida put multiple pointers to just confuse us - I think that Eto was the King. That’s why she told the members of the Aogiri that she is the Owl, but not the King... because the power had been handed down to someone else. Plus, Eto mentions that there will be “a great change” to Aogiri soon, hinting that someone else is in charge of the tree now. Nico had suggested that perhaps the King does not exist; this is probably due to the fact that it’s not just one that acts as the King, there are multiple.

Now, after Kaneki “awakens” from his sleep in :re, he remembers that Nico pointed out the King could be “the little kid covered in bandages” (Eto). Afterwards, he fights the Owl, in which the chapter’s name is “The Second King”. This could refer to Eto (as the actual second King) or Kaneki (as the second King we’ve seen in the series, after Eto). Kaneki seems to want to defeat her, but looks back during the chase when she screams out that she’ll make him her child.

He also claimed that he does not know why he has to “save” her, and afterwards, he is seen eating the Owl’s kagune. I’m guessing he wanted to overrule her so that he could gain her power and position as the King.

According to Eto’s speech in ch. 61, the King first appeared a hundred years ago, and thus the CCG formed. Of course, ghouls age at the same rate that humans do, so there’s no way she could’ve been it back then, as the King’s role would’ve had to change every now and then. A possible hand-down of the position could be: Noro -> Eto -> Kaneki. Seeing how Noro, defeated, was just a mummified body, it could prove how old he really was; not to mention that he was the strongest ghoul in Aogiri after the Owl. It was never shown whether or not Noro had both kakugans, either. Kuzen personally handed the infant Eto to him, maybe to have her grow under the most powerful ghoul around.

Eto also seemed overly obsessed about how Kaneki was doing after their fight. After all, what parent would not be concerned about their child after a great position had been handed down to them? That explains why Noro and Eto were frequently shown together, and how they had almost a family-like relationship between them (aside that he was her foster parent).

(^ ”And my thing... I wonder if it was to your liking, my dear Ka-ne-ki ♡”: hmm, like the King’s position?) + ((There’s a lot more lines/panels that drop hints that the role has been handed down; if you read the last few chapters thinking about it, more things might make sense.))

I think, though, there’s an underlying reason on why Kaneki wanted to inherit her power and be a kind of a double-agent. He goes through the trouble of interrogating her editor and searching through her house, and is still slaughtering ghouls. At the end of ch. 61, V might be calling to Arima/Furuta about Ken Kaneki because he’s altering the “balance” between humans and ghouls or something like that. (And saying that, I highly doubt that Furuta is the King; there’s not enough information we know about him, though.) I don’t know what Sasaneki’s motive is yet; it’ll probably be revealed later on in the year.

+ I still can’t figure out why and how Eto gave away the role. Again, will most likely be revealed in due time.

++ Other similarities between Noro, Eto/Owl, and Kaneki: they’re crazy strong, are feared by humans and ghouls alike, have incredible regeneration, and their kagunes talk. Eto did mention that a kagune’s shape is determined by the user’s creativity, but Kaneki didn’t have kagune with mouths before the time skip after the Rosewald arc. (Compare the three kagunes ((Noro’s, Eto’s, Kaneki’s)) and their progress in intelligible words. While Noro’s speaks a recognizable sentence, Eto’s usually does not make much sense ((”So cool!”, “Tension boogie-woogie!”)), and Kaneki’s just makes sounds. = different depending on role length/experience as the King?)
