I rewatched the movie for the fifth time, and I think I'm finally starting to understand the ALAYM scene. I think it's actually more about Glinda than Fiyero. Explanation below:

When Elphaba walks away from Fiyero and sings her first lines, there's one part where I really thought she was singing about Glinda:

"Kiss me too fiercely, hold me too tight, I need help believing you're with me tonight"

There’s just something about the delivery of "you're" and the facial expressions during these lines that really made me believe she was referring to Glinda, and it makes more sense honestly.

Why would she say she needs help believing Fiyero is with her while refusing to look at him and moving away from him. You would think she'd want to be closer to him based on those lyrics. But if she's trying to imagine she's with Glinda, then of course looking away and closing her eyes would help with that.

Here's where she looks at Fiyero for the first time:

She looks super disappointed, like her dreams were just crushed. And if she was imagining Glinda and looked up and saw a man, then yeah of course. All the blue lighting throughout the scene supports this too, since that's the color of their love. She's going to do her best to keep living in this dream.

This wouldn't even be the first time that Fiyero's existence caused Elphaba to daydream about Glinda. She had the whole "Fiyero, even you" line leading into a flashback focused mainly on her and Glinda.

Then we have the part where the two finally make eye contact:

Remember lies in the light and truth in the dark. Fiyero is standing in a brightly lit spot, has four little pink flowers behind him and there's blue showing through the cracks.

Fiyero is looking at her through different eyes, but I don't think Elphaba is looking at him at all.
