Honestly I feel the only reason people DON’T grow their own saffron in the USA is that they assume it’s some sort of exotic, finicky plant that they couldn’t possibly raise successfully.

Which is false. It’s a hardy little shit, really, like most crocuses. Just don’t freeze it to death or drown it and it will happily grow and bloom and spread into clumps.

You might not get POUNDS of it without huge fields, but you can most certainly get enough for your own use with a few pots/clumps of it.

Also, imagine the bragging rights.

Imagine the look on someone’s face when they taste something you made and you just casually let drop ‘oh yes, glad you like it, I grew the saffron myself.’

They will immediately assume…and I speak from experience…that you are a horticultural god.

Whether or not you debase them of this assumption is entirely up to you.

@lizaliveunenchanted I’m generally willing to risk it on cheaper online bulb retailers, but then I don’t live in an oven.

White Flower Farms is an impeccable retailer, if a bit pricier. Still, it’s only $20.50 from them (plus shipping) for 25 bulbs, which is quite a fair price.

Saffron crocus should be shipped and planted in late summer/early fall. It will bloom in fall.

When @systlin says “in fall”, let me clarify she means “that very fall, almost immediately”. Saffron crocuses crack me up with how eager they are. And I love their foliage! It looks like dense, lush grass with this little purple flower sort of plunked at the base of it.

That’s right, fuck stalks. It’s got blooming to do.

I’ve grown saffron in my front yard in Seattle for a decade now, and after starting with 20 organic local corms ($40 investment), I now have somewhere in the 250-300 corm range, and harvest about 1.5-2 grams each autumn.

#I will have to look into this #I’ve always strayed away from saffron because the price seems prohibitive #Wonder if southern Ontario is warm enough

But why the last? I ask. Why not live each day as if it were the first— all raw astonishment, Eve rubbing her eyes awake that first morning, the sun coming up like an ingénue in the east?

You grind the coffee with the small roar of a mind trying to clear itself. I set the table, glance out the window where dew has baptized every living surface.
