Confession time: I used to be a pick me girl...

For the longest time, I took pride in being “not like other girls.” I thought I was easier to get along with, I was less dramatic, needy and less obsessed with all the "girly" things or whatever else I had decided made other girls shallow or "cringe".

I used to laugh at extremely disgusting sexist jokes, I judged girls for wanting attention, despite wanting it just as badly, and I treated femininity like it was something to be embarrassed about, and thought that male approval was proof that I was doing womanhood "correctly".

At the time, I thought I was escaping misogyny, but the reality is that I had just learned how to repeat it and I was continuing the cycle. I don’t think girls are born hating other girls, I believe we’re taught very early that femininity is something to be ashamed of and that other girls are a threat to ourselves.

Girly interests are called stupid, girls who express their feelings are dramatic, girls who enjoy sex are sluts, and girls who don’t are prudes. There is no correct way to be a girl, because the rules were never designed for us to win but to keep us down while us women attack each other over such nothing things.

So I tried to become the exception.

I thought that if I rejected anything too feminine, stayed agreeable, laughed at the vile jokes, never made "the boys" uncomfortable and readily gave up my body, I might be respected differently.

But male approval is not the same thing as respect.

Approval like that is conditional. It only lasts while you stay easy, entertaining and willing to separate yourself from other women. The moment you speak too loudly, set a boundary, disagree, gain confidence or stop performing for them, you become “just like other girls.”

The hardest part of growing out of a mindset like that was admitting that it didn’t only live inside my head. The way I spoke, judged and distanced myself from other girls, not only hurting them but also myself, even when I told myself and them that I was only joking or "being honest".

I regret that so deeply now.

I regret all the friendships I may have discouraged before they even had a chance to become something beautiful. I regret viewing girls as competition when some of them might have become the sisters I need now. I regret spending so much time trying to prove that I was different from other women instead of learning how deeply I belonged with them.

Now, at the ripe age of 25, I don’t really have a close group of female friends that I can call my sisterhood. And although that isn’t just because of who I was when I was younger, I sometimes wonder what I could have built if I had learned sooner that other girls were never my enemy. There is a particular loneliness in becoming a woman who finally understands the value of sisterhood, only to realise she hasn’t found hers yet.

But I don’t think that means it’s too late.

I can’t undo every judgement I made or recover every potential friendship I might have missed, but I can choose what kind of woman I am now. I can compliment women without comparing myself to them, celebrate them without feeling diminished, listen without searching for reasons to judge, and become the kind of friend I wish I had learned to be sooner.

There was never anything shameful about being like other girls, the other girls are never the enemy, and maybe sisterhood isn’t something I have permanently lost, but instead it’s something I’m finally ready to build.
