âFirst snow of the season--whoâs ready?â
bystcrdustâ:Â
ââŠNot really, no.â She had thought his might have been nearly as cut and dry, but it was starting to dawn on Ava that not everyone had to make pacts for things. Or had this shoved upon them nearly as quickly. âYou⊠They took your memories? Thatâs dumb.â
âUh, no, Manny didnât. Or at least I donât think he did? Or meant to, it just...kind of happened? Like...a trauma thing--no, wait that sounds bad.â The details, like many things that came in the middle, were still hazy, but judging how everyone else had reacted to his lack of memories, Jack was fairly sure it was an accident. It had to be. âBut yeah, it was still kind of dumb. 300 years of really dumb, not gonna lie.â
âWhy is the rain forming a sheet of ice? Why canât we have nice things?â
âYikes, thatâs the Sleet Sisters for you. And people say IÂ make a mess of things. You okay?â
bystcrdustâ:Â
âIt was that or die, and I dunno about you, but I chose life.â Even if Wrathia did twist that too, but Ava had her own way around that. âI was a little less⊠Weird before the vial, but I donât know much. Did you not choose yours? Or at least have a say in it?âÂ
âUhhh, I donât know much either, actually,â he admitted. âThereâs a lot of stuff I havenât really gotten around to asking yet, you know? And a lot I donât remember. I donât mind though! Manny chose me for a reason, and he made the right choice as far as Iâm concerned.â
materxnaturaâ:Â
â a blizzard or two⊠â she echoes absentmindedly, flourishing a bony wrist to conjure small eddies of snow to twist around her fingers. â or a polar vortex. â her hand closes into a fist, abruptly dispelling the snow. itâs difficult to tell whether she is serious or playful behind that elegant and mysterious mask, and itâs a terrifying 50-50 toss-up between the two. yes, her sense of humor does need some work. â now there is some fun. have you ever tried to create one? âÂ
âMe? Mess with a polar vortex? Yeah, Iâll leave that one up to you. The jet stream never listens to me--itâs so bossy.â Sure, heâd played around with the vortex before, pushed and pulled at the edges here and there, but that was just playing. Affecting something that spanned almost half the planet was far beyond taming a stray blizzard. âI donât think weâre ready for a new ice age, you know?â
â ridiculous, â she growls, though there is the smallest curve of a smile on her lips. because if sheâs honest, it feels good to play again. the days when mischief was easy for mother nature seem far and lost, but standing with this white-haired youth at her side, theyâre a little closer and a little less painful. â blonde does not suit me. â
@whistleupawinterâ continued from here.
Jack considered that, finally shrugging in acceptance. His smile didnât fade for a second. âOkay, sure, youâve got a point. I couldnât see you blonde. But that doesnât mean you canât do the castle.â
bystcrdustâ:Â
âMore like drank it, I think⊠You at least are kinda making some sense to me, I still donât understand whateverâs goinâ on with me.â Ava could at least rationalize it easier than her own situation, even with both of them having less than fantastic explanations. âPacts are weird, letâs leave it there. One of my friends grows leaves in her hair when sheâs mad and she hasnât drank any weird vials yet, soâŠâ
âA pact? That sounds...formal.â Honestly, Jack wasnât entirely solid on the definition, but it definitely sounded like something serious. âListen, I can understand leaves--I grow ice in my hair--but are you saying you chose it or something? I donât remember the whole thing, but I know I didnât drink anything either. I mean, maybe some pond water. One accident. Maybe.â
bystcrdustâ:Â
Okay, so it wasnât entirely the same, but there was enough of a similarity in Avaâs view for her to understand what he was talking about. Kinda. âHey, âs the first thing I thought of âcus thatâs where mine comes from, and someone else I know⊠But it still kinda sounds like weâre in the same boat. I was a human, not so much anymore, but thatâs my own faultâŠâ
âFair enough, I get it. I am kind of one of a kind, so I get that it can be confusing. Iâm just not used to explaining it yet, I guess.â He shrugged, then frowned. âYour fault? What, did you jump headfirst into lava or something? Because I went skating on thin ice, so, yâknow, if weâre pointing fingers here...â
bystcrdustâ:Â
âUnfortunately. But what are you if you donât have a demon? Well, I canât say that, I knew a guy who was just⊠Blue. He was weird. Still is.â As much as Ava would have loved to toss out any other ideas that she might have had, nothing was making sense just yet, and the way he said alien wasnât helping either. âYouâre a human, arenât you?â
âI mean, thereâs lots of things in the world that donât have demons, you know,â Jack pointed out, leaning forward on his staff. He felt like he was in a little over his head here, but still laughed at the question. âUh, no, not human. Well, not anymore, anyway, and itâs been a long time. Iâm a Guardian. Or a winter spirit, or a weather phenomenon--take your pick, really. Iâm just...me. Definitely from right here on Earth, though.â
bystcrdustâ:Â
âIâm, uh⊠No. My planet didnât have a name, or a⊠Solar system, really, so take that as you will.â None of what he said after made any real sense to the Vengess, who blinks. What did that have to do with snow besides the surname? ââŠWhy does that affect the snow? Do you have a shitty demon haunting you too?â
âWait, what? Do I have a demon? No, Iâm--have you really never heard of me? Not even the song? Everyoneâs heard the stupid song...â He blinked as her earlier words clicked. âOh! Youâre an alien? That makes sense. Actually...that makes a lot of sense. Youâre the one giving off that heat, arenât you?â
bystcrdustâ:Â
ââŠThis is my first time seeinâ like, real snow. So, uh, the dyinâ part is pretty, er, was pretty literal. Gotta love artificial suns, huh? Big, gross fake light, all corporation made. Actually, that sounds really weird now that Iâm sayinâ it. And, uh, Ava. Iâm Ava. Why?â
âWait, artificial? I know thereâs lots of places that donât get any snow, but donât they have...yâknow, lots of real sunshine? I get the feeling youâre not talking about Bermuda here. But it is nice to meet you, Ava. Iâm Jack Frost.--hence the snow, obviously.â
bystcrdustâ:Â
âBring it on! Iâm ready for all of the snow I could ever want! Then I can die happy, and never have to worry about not seeinâ my fill again!âÂ
âOkay, well, hopefully you wonât need to die, but we can work with that. Iâll try and make sure you get all the snow you could ever want. Whatâs your name, anyway? I donât think I remember you, and I remember...well, basically everyone who likes snow.â
bystcrdustâ:Â
âIâll give you the same talk I gave Egbert, but if you make it five I wonât try and torch it.â
âEg--? Oh, you want more? That can definitely be arranged. Thereâs no better blizzed-wrangler than me.â
âHow can it snow for three days? How can you get this much snow at once?âÂ
âPretty good, right? No need to thank me.â
âš
âš Playfully shove my museâs shoulder
âWhat, Iâm serious!â The winter spirit grinned back at her, happy to be joking around at all, but moreso at having gotten any sort of rise out of her. It was a rare feat, and not one he took for granted. âYou could have the whole ice castle and the dress and everything! You wouldnât even have to sing. Itâs a really popular movie! Kids would love it!â

đ€ Come up beside them and tap the shoulder opposite where theyâre standing
For all his prowess as possibly the best mischief-maker in the world, Jack totally fell for it, and started laughing before the surprise wore off. âHey! Sorry I was gone so long--I swear, summers are getting worse. Whatâd I miss?â
đ
đ Fix/Straighten my museâs clothes
âOh, yeah, sorry.â He plucked at his frost-laced sweatshirt as well and gave a shrug. âItâs kinda the only thing I own, so...doesnât really look much nicer than this, I guess. Guess it might be time for something new, though, huh?â
