Heres a fun variation of the triangle choke we worked on in practice. You go for a hip bump and if they post to stop it you get an opening to lock in a triangle. Of course sometimes you just get the hip bump sweep and end up on top but its a great attack sequence.

Life is Hard Enough

There’s a girl at my dojo, same age as me and we’re pretty good friends. She struggles a lot with self-confidence, and while she’s grown a lot she still makes a lot of self-deprecating comments.

When we walked up to do our kata, she made some “I’m totally gonna mess this up” comment, to which my master replied,

“Life is going to throw enough challenges and negativity at you, don’t let yourself add to it. You have to bring yourself up so it balances out with life’s negativity.”

First break through

I’ve been training bjj consistently (3-4x a week) since New Year’s Day 2019. I love learning techniques, the workout it gives me, etc, but in a gym brimming with tremendous fighters and a great coach, big milestones are a bit tough to come by.

I get tapped ALL. THE. TIME.

At first I took it hard, but now I’ve come to accept it happens. Whatever. But in the back of my mind I can’t help but wonder if I’ll ever “get it.” My confidence is a bit low to begin with, and getting shut down constantly is a true test.

So. Last night, may 9th, was the first time I ever tapped someone in a live roll. It’s been 4 months, and I was embarrassed by my “failure” even though I knew it shouldn’t mean a thing. But last night, with an arm triangle, I finally got it.

I know I’m going to go back to losing all the time, but now I’m completely ok with it. Maybe bjj really will click eventually.

Day 1 on meds. I heard the first couple of weeks are supposed to kinda suck, today has felt weird (though I’m not sure if it’s because of this.) I hope it all gets better though.
