What’s happening in Marawi City is an emergency and a tragedy but PLEASE avoid calling them ISIS fighters. They are part of the Maute Group, an Islamist group that has pledged allegiance to ISIS and Abu Bakr. Calling them ISIS fighters would make many people think that foreign terrorists have made their way into the Philippines, making this seem like an issue of international security instead of domestic/regional. What that does is put the Philippines at further risk of imperialist intervention in this era of the global ‘war on terror’. So please avoid rhetoric that plays into imperialist hysteria, because if there’s one thing that will make this situation a whole lot worse, it will be a whole bunch of Westerners calling for Western powers to come ‘save’ the Phillipines. Our #PinayCrush this week is Geraldine Roman, a journalist and politician who is the first openly transgender woman elected to the Congress of the Philippines, with an impressive 62% share of the vote in the 2016 elections. She is now the representative for the 1st district of northern Bataan province. Pilipinx netizens celebrated the news of Ms Roman’s election win, calling it a “huge breakthrough” in a country where transgender people face widespread discrimination and violence, and hopes it will open doors for future transgender leaders. During the campaign trail Ms Roman shared that her family always remained supportive of her, and her father advised her to “remain confident” despite being bullied for her gender identity in school. Throughout her political career LGBTQ+ rights have remained a huge priority for Ms Roman, in a country where the religious majority still plays a powerful role. She said: “If Jesus Christ was alive today, he would not approve of discrimination. I firmly believe that.”

“Baka Bukas” (2016) Trailer (with eng subs)

For those who don’t know what my previous post was about.

“Baka Bukas” was a film in competition for the Cinema One Originals Film Festival 2016. This film won the Best Actress Award (Jasmine Curtis, Alex), along with Best Sound and Audience Choice Award. I was able to experience the overflowing support for the film. It was very hard to buy tickets for this movie as they always seem to run out before lunchtime. That’s why I went to the cinemas the moment they open. Yes, I was that desperate hahah Luckily, I got to watch it and I am glad I did. Just the fact that this movie was being shown in cinemas in our country, is already a great feat on its own. Story wise, it’s very relatable especially to all “Millenials” whether you are gay or not. Along with the plot that the girl is in love with her best friend. Who wouldnt be able to relate with that? not gonna spoil you guys some more but I just want you to know that this is a must watch movie!!

As reportedly earlier, “Baka Bukas” will be shown in cinemas this March! Be sure to watch it!
