What if the closing shot for the finale is a hysterical, crying Elijah holding Hayley's bloody, limp, dead body after the birth, and then we see/hear him whispering to her something we can't understand but then we hear a muffled, "I promise." Then he kisses her on the forehead and it cuts black and thats the end of the episode.

I’ll add something to that, then Elijah gets up, kills everyone on his way out and the screen cuts to black when we see his vampire face covered in blood.
