         In all honesty, it does not take long for the shock of seeing him ALIVE to wear off. If anyone could possibly pull off such a stunt it would be the man before Gabe. He does not deny the herculean task before Steve. He does not deny the tragedy of a life lost in the time it took for him to be found. He does not know how his former self would react to being dropped in a radically different world, he would not presume to know where Steve should start. Instead Gabriel relies on his ( optimistic )  nature, seeking for some way to help lessen the pain hidden behind his old friend’s youthful face.

     a GIFT. well, of course steve had tried thinking about it that way already, but it doesn’t change the fact that it happened. if this is a blessing in disguise, steve is ready to take off the disguise part. the buildings are different-- tall & freshly painted, not the ones he grew up with. sure, there are SOME similarities. of course that might just be his brain trying to comprehend all of this though. he survived, but he PAID for it. he pays for it every time he wakes up and has to check a damn calendar, every time he wakes up SCREAMING bucky’s name. every time he has to think about the way peggy’s red lips must have curved into a frown that didn’t quite suit her. glancing down for a solid moment, steve offers a shrug, before meeting gabe’s eyes again. 

                          ‘ well. whatever it is-- i’m glad you’re here, too. ’

     even if it wasn’t the gabe steve really remembered, it was someone. they’re a familiar pair of eyes  & just what he needs right about now. it’s reassuring. taking a deep breath in, steve musters up a sad excuse for a smile.

          her expression didn’t fall away from the look of sheer TERROR that has been on her face since breaking the news to steve, her arms crossed across her chest, each hand on the upper of the opposite arm, hugging herself gently. and even despite the fact he seemed to be full of joy at the prospect of a child , ( OF A FAMILY ) , she still wasn’t quite so sure. the brunette lifts a shaking hand, pressing her right index finger to her lips in an attempt to shush him in the most polite way possible. “ we don’t KNOW that yet. ” she manages.

          if there was anything that made the younger stark more TERRIFIED, it was the very idea of carrying a child. ( or rather, the idea of LOSING it. ) and so, she hasn’t told anyone, not even tony. the only people who know is herself and steve, since he had the right to know. 

          “ with mama’s history… and then— with MY history… ” chocolate hues are cast toward the floor again, to hide the tears that are threatening to spill over. “ not yet… we have to wait. ” she insisted. she didn’t want to get her hopes up, only to be let down AGAIN. it was better not to think about it, than it was to get attached to something else she was might very well lose. ( and god knows that she has dealt with enough of THAT. )

     the first thing he notices is she’s not smiling like he is. if anything, she looks scared, which is understandable. honestly, steve will have his days of terror too. he’ll have his days when he questions if he’s being the best DAD he can be. teeth scrapping over his bottom lip, steve nods, slowly adapting a more serious expression. he gets on one knee and places his hand against tanya’s stomach, looking up at her through his long lashes. the least he can do is try to comfort her through this. with his free hand, steve laces tanya’s fingers with his own, managing what he hopes to be an encouraging smile.          

      it isn’t like he expected her to be alright with this, either. he knows about maria’s HISTORY. knows about  tanya’s, too. he can guess what she’s scared of, just by the look in her eyes. but then again, what mother ISN’T terrified of that? just the thought would be enough to make any woman shake with fear.   ❛ we’ll take it ONE DAY at a time, tanya. everything is going to be alright, okay ? science has improved since... then.  ❜ & maybe, it’s improved just enough to let them have a family.  

      pressing a kiss to her stomach over her clothes, steve forces himself to stand; he’s still holding her hand TIGHTLY, as if she might slip away at any given moment ( mentally &/or physically ), he can already tell that the next 9 months are going to be so challenging for the both of them, but he’s ready.  ❛ i’m in this for the long run, tanya.  ❜

A soft smile is offered to the other. Rain might not be a werewolf, but she understands that things don’t always go the the best, especially when it comes to the supernatural. “It’s fine, don’t worry about it. Weird stuff is kind of normal around here anyways.” The reason they have so many paintings are from various holes in the walls, or scorch marks. Some of the scorches on the floor can’t be covered, though, simply because it wasn’t worth the money to bother with those. “Do you uh, like sugar, or milk, or anything?”

Rain herself didn’t actually drink coffee, but thanks to her roommate, she was the master at actually making it. Maybe because of her skills in the kitchen, or maybe because she was really good at keeping things warm. “Sorry if it’s kind of a mess, usually I clean up before company.”

❛ well, i’m wiling to bet you weren’t expecting company. especially under these... circumstances. .  ❜  she should have  just shown him the door; should have kicked him out. she should be looking for a new place, but she ISN’T & the thought makes steve go wild. it’ll be nice not having neighbors that fear him. that, instead of trying to burn his house down, will understand how he feels.  ❛  let me take you out to breakfast. a real breakfast-- if you want. we can go to ihop, or-- wherever.    ❜ 

   he OWED her that much, at least. & from what the dog told him, rain doesn’t get out too much. granted, neither does he, but that’s not the problem. he doesn’t really know how he’s planning on getting to ihop while still nude, but. well, as his mother said, he’ll have to cross that bridge when he gets to it.  ❛  i’ll take mine black, thank you.  ❜ call him old fashioned; he doesn’t like his coffee sweet since it takes away from the flavor. his taste-buds are sensitive.

he’s the one who gave tony the phone in the first place. of COURSE steve knows the number. he knows a lot of things— but what he’s going to say ? well; that’s a whole other story. he types out so many different messages, each longer than the last. they can fight & fight. tear each other’s eyes out. rip off arms & legs. but, a birthday is still a birthday. last year had been simpler. at least they were in the same COUNTRY. now, of course, steve was in wakanda, his thumbs d a n c i n g over the touch screen, trying so hard to think.  eventually, he decides on something simple.

    & before he can hesitate yet again, steve presses the send button. he hopes tony hasn’t thrown the phone away by now. he doesn’t expect any response, of course, but he’d like to be surprised just this once. setting the phone down against the counter, steve sighs, hand reaching to rub up his face & into his hair, giving blonde locks a tug bordering on painful.

          “ &&   what   kind   of   movie   do   you   THINK   i’m   thinking   of ??   i   just   want   to   be   sure   you’re   not   going   to   force   me   to   watch   something   black   &&   white . ”   of   course ,   that   was   a   lie .   or   rather ,   not   so   much   a   lie   as   it   is   a   slight   stretching   of   the   truth .   it   was   actually   both   what   HE   was   thinking   &&   what   she   had   said .   a   double   standard   question .   “ but ,   you   know .   fifty   shades   of   gray   is   still   a   great   movie … ”   she   adds ,   a   shit   eating   grin   plastered   across   her   face .

          she   rolls   her   eyes ,   watching   steve   move   from   his   spot   to   hunt   through   the   piles   of   movies   that   the   starks   have   on   hand .   she’s   almost   tempted   to   remind   him   that   jarvis   has   practically   any   movie   he   might   think   of ,   but   she’s   aware   that   he   already   KNOWS   that   &&   is   electing   to   ignore   it .   (  not   that   she   would   complain   much   with   is   old   fashioned   ways .   after   all ,   she   has   a   great   view   of   his   ass   from   this   angle .  )

          “ i   love   that   movie . ”   she   points   out ,   “ it’s   one   of   my   favorites . ”   &&   at   least   that   much   was   true .   the   princess   &&   the   frog   was   one   of   few   disney   movies   that   she   appreciates   little   girls   watching .   adults   too .   tiana   was   a   perfect   role   model   to   everyone .

    ❛  i know. tony told me. & hey-- 12 angry men is great, & IT’S in black & white.  ❜    there were other movies too, better than what this era could offer. steve just saw too many similarities between them all, now. 50 shades of gray was no exception, either.  ❛  i didn’t like it. too predictable, &-- she basically said no. he ignored that & continued to peruse.  ❜  so with that logic, it was easy to assume steve wasn’t a fan. 

    what he did like though, was movies like this. he hadn’t really expected the story to turn out this way, but it did, & he’s a fan. steve puts the movie in, & then makes his way back to the couch, reclaiming his seat beside tanya. the familiar start up tune begins to play, & the start credits begin to roll. here he is, spending the night with tanya stark, watching netflix and sitting on the couch. it was.. nice.
