I love it when people who have only read Lymond go, "Well, the characters may think that some of them have supernatural powers but this is just a combo of the Barnum effect and those characters having a good information network. The inclusion of magic just accurately reflects the superstitions of the time period the books take place in!" because then I, the enlightened House of Niccolò reader, get to tell them that no actually Lymond's great grandpa point blank knows how to work magic and he uses it for get rich quick schemes, financial fraud, and stalking his estranged wife.

ScotSwap 2026 Timeline Poll
Hi all! I’m starting to get ready for running ScotSwap 2026, a Lymond Chronicles fanfic and fanart exchange!
This is a minimum 1k fic/clean line drawing exchange with 2.5 months to create
Last year we ran sign-ups at the start of April and had submissions due in mid-July, which was decided by running a poll for potential participants’ preferred timelines.
If you think you might want to make art or fic for this exchange, please vote!
Even if you don’t, please reblog to signal boost!
Here in this small fandom I want to make sure it gets as far as wide as I can, and the most people are able to participate!
What should the timeline be for ScotSwap 2026?
Signups in April; assignments in May; works due mid-July
Signups in May; assignments in June; works due mid-August
Signups in June; assignments in July; works due mid-September
Signups in July; assignments in August; works due mid-October
Signups in August; assignments in September; works due mid-November
Signups in September; assignments in October; works due mid-December
Tagging a bunch of last year’s participants and people who mentioned maybe wanting to in future years, plus other Lymond fandom people I can think of off the top of my head who might want to boost, but again please spread around even if you aren’t on here! I’m just going off a mental Rolodex of people in the fandom, and I’m sure I’m missing a bunch because I’m just one person. Feel free to tag anyone else you think might be interested :)

Claes vs Nicholas
So I was at a book fair and found a huge stack of past issues of the Dorothy Dunnett Society's magazine 'The Whispering Gallery.' In one of the articles, a member writes about going to Dunnett's estate sale and buying a box of her books, including Renaissance Portraits by Lorne Campbell, which was full of post-its with character names. On one page is Antonello da Messina's portrait The Condottiere and the note in Dunnett's handwriting says 'Niccolò?'
Another exciting one for me is her note of 'Gelis?' above a portrait by Rogier van der Weyden entitled Portrait of a Lady. Here it is:
On the post-it above this painting of Federico Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, by Titian, Dunnett had written: 'Gk with wooden leg? Good face but not bearded.'
And above this portrait by Hans Memling called Man: 'Man, 1470s, Gregorio?'
The only note without a question mark was apparently above this picture attributed to Fra Filippo Lippi entitled Lady. Dunnett had written 'Lucia.'
They all pretty much look like the characters I had in my mind's eye. For me, Nicholas was always the hardest to picture, but I think this portrait by Antonello da Messina is a good approximate.
Starting a collection
[Nicholas said,] "[...] I felt as if a wave of doom were waiting to fall on me." "Well, it is," Godscalc said, "But we all expect you to deal with it."
Godscalc understands the reader's perspective on a Dunnett protagonist
dorothy dunnet said i am going to write sentence so incomprehensible. and thsats waht she did.
sowed some stuff but i’m thinking i might not reap it. if it sucks i’ll probably just not reap it.
Claes / Nicol / Banco / Colà / Nikko / Nicomack / Lord Beltrees making a little mechanical toy frog, and three guard geese.
(for Dorothy Dunnett's House of Niccolò series. I now have a Dorothy Dunnett tag!)

Fandoms: Lymond Chronicles - Dorothy Dunnett Rating: Teen & Up (for graphic depictions of violence) Category: Gen Characters: Francis Crawford of Lymond and Sevigny, Graham Reid Malett, mentioned Jerott Blyth, mentioned Margaret Douglas Summary: "He leaned his forehead against the rough surface of the wood, shut his eyes, and tried to breathe deeply as he waited for the first lash to fall." On Lymond's experiences with flogging. Set during the end of The Disorderly Knights with flashbacks to the galleys era. Words: 1,181
Here is one of two ScotSwap fics I wrote - this one for AceofKittens on AO3, it's basically just straight up hurt-no-comfort of what was going on in Lymond's head when he was dissociating during the flogging scene at the end of The Disorderly Knights.
Written for ScotSwap 2025
trope i really like is self-loathing characters desperate for the catharsis of punishment for frankly rather selfish reasons who r also obsessed with repeatedly pressing others into hating them and hurting them as essentially a method of self harm. yes baby continue making it worse for urself and everybody around u instead of doing an actually productive and effective journey of improvement and redemption

My contribution to this year’s ScotSwap fanfic/art exchange.
For @whodunnett1526 - I really enjoyed thinking about the prompt and how to connect the two series, thank you, and I hope it’s worked out ok!
Aaand now I’m off to look at all the rest 😁
