Long Overdue Update

Hey folks! It's been a while hasn't it. I've been super busy and kinda depressed so here's a list of my current stats/what has happened in the past few months

I started college

Survived my first semester/half of my second

Was put on Academic probation (yikes)

Broke up with my boyfriend after 4 months (turns out dating a literal 50 year old man when you're freshly 18 is not super great so yikes)

Got a new boyfriend yay! (he's 19)

Have not worked on any of my fics

Made some great new friends including one I slept with once but we're just buds now

Bodycount went from 3 to 13

Somehow avoided pregnancy several times! Yay!

Pegged a guy for the first time (he turned out to be an alcoholic who wanted me to be his gf which is problematic both because I'm not a cis woman and he's 32)

A classmate of mine committed control alt delete so I had to start going to biweekly therapy again!

I have been completely unmedicated aside from my birth control but I just refilled my Adderall prescription so hopefully I will get some more writing done

Now for my plans for the upcoming weeks/months!

I am still chipping away at my Aralas fic. It's about halfway done and I should be posting another teaser soon

I'm working on getting an archive of my works from Ao3 posted here on Tumblr

I will be posting a list of projects I hope to complete this year soon. Many are projects from the 2021 list that I have not yet finished

I hope to be more active on here in general

My Aralas fic is getting to me again

I try not to treat Legolas as a self insert in my fic, but at times I can't help it. We have so much in common, we're both coming of age into a world clouded by a shadow of evil, we have complicated relationships with our family, we have complicated relationships with our gender identity and our sexuality, we both struggle to walk the line between what our family and society expects from us and what we actually want. I can't help but relate to him at times.

I decided that I was going to make Legolas transmasc for a number of reasons, there's nothing in cannon that directly goes against it, elves canonically have different relationships with gender than other races, and it just makes sense within the cannon of my fic.

Because Legolas is trans though, there is a part towards the end where he could be pregnant and he has to figure out how he feels about that. I also might be pregnant right now. I haven't told anyone and it's too early to test, I haven't even missed a period, but I've had to think so much about what I'm going to do if I am pregnant. Best case scenario would be that I'm not pregnant, that way I don't have to make a decision, but at the same time through writing Legolas's reaction, I've learned that maybe I do want a baby.

When I write his reaction, his fears, his desires, I'm writing from my heart, I'm processing my feelings through him, and it's sorta therapeutic in a way but at the same time it's very emotional.

What the fellowship would order from Starbucks (by someone who took a Tolkien class senior year)

Sam - Sam would love PSLs. If it were up to him they would be available all year round, but when they're not he'll get a chai latte, perhaps iced during the summer.

Frodo - when Frodo goes to Starbucks, it's always with Sam and Sam usually just orders the same thing he was going to get already for Frodo.

Merry - Merry likes something sweet, but caffeinated, and he likes to switch it up. He'll usually go for whatever seasonal frappuccino or latte they have and a cake pop

Pippin - Pippin is not allowed to have caffeine (that's Gandalf's rule of course) so he usually gets one of the creme frappuccinos and a cake pop

Boromir - Boromir is definitely one of those guys who thinks that anything other than black drip coffee or cold brew is too "girly", until Merry or Pippin makes him try a sip of one of their drinks and he realizes that they taste much better. He still will only order black coffee if he's not alone though.

Aragorn - Aragorn on the other hand isn't so insecure in his masculinity that he would sacrifice taste. He's a slut for iced caramel macchiatos any day.

Legolas - maybe it's just the green aesthetic, but I feel like Legolas would like an iced matcha latte, or maybe a starfruit refresher

Gimli - I have two words for you COLD FOAM. It would get all up in his beard and mustache, but he would love it too much to stop ordering it.

Gandalf - Gandalf would always try to order from the "secret menu" and stress out whatever poor teenage barista was working that day. He'd always have like super complicated orders like "a half cafe vanilla latte light ice with half almond milk, half coconut milk, substitute the vanilla for caramel, and extra caramel drizzle, and three pumps of butterscotch". Either that or he'd try to order out of season drinks because he is so very old and cannot keep up with what time of the year it is.

Yeah, so as it turns out one of those "healthy father son relationships" is not as healthy as I initially thought...

As I write my Aralas fic I keep trying to come up with ways for Aragorn to become immortal. Even though my fic is set 60+ years before FOTR, and Aragorn won't die in cannon for another 190 years, I am forced to deal with his mortality compared to the elves. 210 years is a VERY long time, but when it is compared to an elf who has already lived over a millennium, it's basically moments.

I've tried to come up with loopholes, like Eru made Tuor immortal, couldn't he do that for Aragorn? Couldn't Legolas sneak him into the undying lands like he did with Gimli in cannon? Aragorn is technically part of Elros's bloodline, so theoretically shouldn't he be able to choose between mortality and immortality like Arwen?

But in the end I keep coming back to the same place. Yes, there are plenty of ways I can make him immortal, but maybe I don't have to. Maybe in the end Aragorn dies and he and Legolas don't get to be together in the undying lands, and maybe that's okay.

When characters constantly cheat death it cheapens it, it takes away its meaning. Aragorn, and the rest of the men for that matter, were given the gift of mortality, a precious, precious gift in the eyes of Eru. Why should he give that up?

Nothing can last forever, not in life and not in fiction. Shouldn't it be enough just to enjoy it while we have it?

So in the books Elladan and Elrohir are really only there for a little while, and aren't characterized much beyond being sorta stoic and noble, and they aren't in the movies at all (actually, I think they might have been in the hobbit movies, but I've only seen the last one so idk) so I've really been developing them the way I want to as I write my Aralas fic. It's gotten to the point where I love these two so much and I have to remind myself that they do not exist in cannon the way that I picture them. Like, back before school ended when we were finishing up ROTK my teacher was like "I hate Elladan and Elrohir because I can never remember their names" and I had to stop myself from getting personally offended because I have fallen in love the idea of them that I have created in my writing.

You know what I love about Boromir? He had the perfect setup for the “gifted sibling who is the obvious favorite child snubs younger sibling/doesn’t validate how terrible their parent(s) are to them” stereotype but instead he absolutely DOTES on Faramir. He never tries to invalidate the extent of Denethor’s neglect or abuse, and he never pulls the “he’s still your dad you still have to love him” bullshit. He knows how poorly Denethor treats Faramir, and he actively tries to treat him better, because he loves his brother and he can see all of his skills and strengths that Denethor can’t.
