SUMMARY: In the Old West, Alexander Pierce buys men, land, and laws to build his railroad on blood. His daughter, promised against her will to Brock Rumlow, waits for a ghost: James “Bucky” Barnes, the maid’s son who once swore he would come back for her.

When a masked stranger walks into the town saloon and begins telling a story about Pierce’s girl, old promises rise again from the dust. Between duels, she will have to decide how far she is willing to go to be free.

NOTES: This fanfic is inspired by Art Deco by Lana Del Rey, especially the line "Shining like gunmetal, cold and unsure." Gunmetal, the alloy used in weapons, feels like a direct nod to his metal arm. Art deco, with its luxurious elegance and rigid sophistication, mirrors the Winter Soldier’s public image: flawless on the outside, crafted to impress, yet ultimately a showcase of HYDRA’s power. The lyric "out on the floor" evokes the idea of him being on display, observed, much like when he was sent on missions that doubled as a performance of strength. The cold shine of the metal reflects his lethal aesthetic, while "cold and unsure" captures his essence as the Soldier, trained to be emotionless, but internally lost, his identity fragmented. This song distills the Winter Soldier’s cold, lethal exterior, the emptiness and social alienation that define him, and the quiet hunger for something more. Lana writes about characters who look beautiful from a distance but are broken within, and that’s Bucky in his purest state during his time as the Soldier.
