Remember that time when Benedict Cumberbatch guest-starred on The Magic School Bus as that creepy lizard man?
Sherlock Theory (SPOILERS)
THIS POST CONTAINS S4 SPOILERS.
IF YOU CONTINUE READING, DON’T SAY I DIDN’T WARN YOU.
SERIOUSLY.
As stated in The Six Thatchers, Mycroft did have something to do with A.G.R.A. He told Sherlock that the last time they hired freelancers was six years ago (the only piece about Mary’s backstory that we have been shown). But, maybe Mycroft knew that Mary survived. Scratch that. Mycroft did know that Mary survived. He always knows. Knowing that Mary was back in London and needed a new identity, one that would presumably keep her safe, he contacted her. Mycroft hired Mary to protect John after Sherlock “died” in The Reichenbach Fall because he knew John was vulnerable at that point. I believe that John was suicidal. Mycroft probably didn’t know when/if Sherlock would come back, and John needed protection.
Mary got too close to John, however, and her feelings for him became real. John wanted to marry her, and Mycroft knew this. What reason would Mary have to turn down his proposal? He was all she had. The life he was offering her was all she had ever wanted. Marriage wasn’t in the contract, but if it would protect John, she would do it (just like how Sherlock would propose to Janine to get close to Magnussen). That’s why Mycroft decided it was time for Sherlock to come back to London (the imminent terrorist attack was just another reason for him to return). Sherlock being back would tear John and Mary apart (it always did with his other relationships). But Mary had been there for John when no one else had. Even though Sherlock came back, he married her anyways (also notice why Mycroft was absent from the wedding – not just because he hates people).
Mary panicked when Sherlock told her and John that she was pregnant because, by this time, she knew that Magnussen knew about her past (he sent her the telegram for the wedding). She knew that she was in danger, but now, she had a child and a husband who would also be put in danger. She needed to eliminate Magnussen from the picture to keep the life she’d always wanted. She almost did it, but Sherlock, as usual, got in the way. She was shocked to see him in the office on the night they all broke in. She hadn’t yet killed Magnussen or gotten what she wanted. She had two decisions. She could kill Magnussen to keep her secret safe, but then Sherlock would know, and she knew he would tell John, thus ending their relationship. OR she could kill Sherlock and still try to get what she wanted from Magnussen. She was desperate to keep the life she was given, so she went for the latter option. However, she was nervous about killing Sherlock, because what if John still found out? Her shot was supposed to instantly kill Sherlock, but she missed. She only severely wounded him, and there was a slight chance he would survive. To put it in simple terms, she knew she was fucked. She had to leave immediately because John would walk in any second, so she hit Magnussen hard and hauled ass to get out of there. When Sherlock deduced that she had meant to shoot him where she did to keep him alive, she went along with it in case John would eventually forgive her. She also went along with it because she knew Sherlock was loyal. He would try to protect her as best as he could to ultimately protect John.
When Sherlock killed Magnussen, Mary believed she was finally safe. Mycroft, however, was the only person to know that she wasn’t. Flash forward to when the Thatcher busts started to get smashed. Mycroft wanted Sherlock to solve that case. Why? Because he knew what it was about. He knew that Ajay was alive and that if Sherlock took him out, Mary would then be safe. If Mary went after Ajay, it would result in her death. That’s why he didn’t want her getting involved with it. If Mary was killed, John would be hurt. If John was hurt, Sherlock would be hurt as well. Mycroft couldn’t stand to see Sherlock in pain, even if he didn’t want to admit it. But Sherlock still told Mary about it. Mycroft knew this, and for some reason, he did nothing. When Mary was killed in the aquarium, they all saw how mad John was at Sherlock. Sherlock tried his best to protect Mary, but he failed. John didn’t really know this though. He didn’t actually see Mary get shot. He only heard Mary tell Sherlock that they were even. He probably thought that Sherlock shot her, but he didn’t bother asking, and Sherlock didn’t say anything. Still, for some reason, Mycroft said nothing either.
Now for the introduction as Culverton Smith as a villain. Obviously, the Easter Egg in The Six Thatchers showed that Smith is in the media. He will threaten to reveal Mycroft’s secret. I don’t know how he’ll know it, but he will. He’ll tell Sherlock about it, so Sherlock will take the case to continue to protect John, and now, Mycroft. However, he fails again, and when everyone eventually finds out, they hate Mycroft (*cough* Mrs. Hudson telling him to get out of her flat because he’s a reptile).
If I am anywhere near being correct, I think that this will be further described in episodes 2 and 3. I also think that this is somehow leading up to Mycroft being seriously injured or possibly killed. I know it’s just a theory, but to me, it makes sense. Let me know what you think too. I’m interested in hearing your opinions.
And just in case you were wondering, my two main points of this theory are justified. In the Abominable Bride, Mary worked for Mycroft. Also, Sherlock and Mycroft had a bet to see how long he had left to live. I don’t believe that Moftiss would put this in an actual episode if it didn’t mean something. They knew people would disregard the episode just because it was set in a different time period, and that means we have to look even closer at it.

THE STAR TREK FAN EVENT WAS AMAZING!! \*-*/❤️❤️❤️
I can’t wait to see Beyond, everything was so beautiful and epic!! Also, endless feels!
Frodo was now safe in the Last Homely House east of the Sea. That house was, as Bilbo had long ago reported, ‘a perfect house, whether you like food or sleep, or story-telling or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all’. Merely to be there was a cure for weariness, fear, and sadness.
