you had stepped into the paddock this morning with extra pep in your walk, a bright smile on your face and a delicious coffee. the sun was shining, crowds were already gathering, ready for the buzz of race weekend everything was quite literally, perfect.
well until you crashed into a solid body, toppling over about six steps, greeting the ground with open arms and a comical thud, your coffee everywhere โ mainly on you โ and a camera practically shoved up your ass from how close the media was "getting in on this scoop".
a chuckle drew your attention away from the mess you had just made and you look up to see the bane of your very existence and yet the person you pretty much relied upon to keep this job.
jameson goddamn hawthorne.
the ever present thorn in your side, that has been unlovingly attached to you ever since fred vasseur had dragged him into his office three months ago. the ferrari superstar was clearly living his best life, but in the process ruining the teams name every time he went out. girlfriend after girlfriend, party after party it all added up until fred had hired you.
he had given you a singular job: pull jameson in line.
so far you had been doing a surprisingly well job, but that came with a cost. cameras.
who's the new girl staying by jamesons side for everything? a new possible girlfriend? a fling? everyone is oh so excited to find out. you yawned when the latest set of headlines came out. clearly no one in a the vicinity has lost their moral compass and stalked both you and jameson to find out you're only a pr manager. so there are goods and bads.
"you know a hand there P?" jameson smirks looking down at you on the floor. he refuses to call you by your name and has decded pr manager is a better fit, but too awkward to say so he's just settled with p...
"i'm fine, thanks," you say getting up without taking his extended hand and picking up your discarded belongings and empty coffee cup before nodding to him to keep moving. "let's go, fred is waiting."
groaning, he falls into step with you towards the ferrari hospitality, ignoring the curious eyes that follow and simply focusing on the meeting ahead of him.
"are you going to be fired today?" he asks when you start up the steps to the building.
"fired is a bit harsh, but yes, i might be, depending on how you've been acting," you shrug, ignoring the little tug in your gut that says you don't really want to go.
you walk past a smirking charles when you're inside. his shit eating grin a clear reminder of his delight in the whole situation. he has been less annoying than jameson, but then again mr leclerc isn't perfect with his reputation either- he just hides it better, so there is less to clean up.
"its good to see you too charles," you smile at you walk into the meeting room.

the meeting went well. jameson's behaviour has improved drastically with you by his side reminding him what he can and cant post, and babysitting him whenever he goes out for a night. in fact fred wants to let jameson have freedom again. which is great for him.
not so great for you.
because that means you've been fired. well more so let go as fred had put it. jameson had improved exponentially and the ferrari reputation was back where they wanted it. they were letting you go, but with a recommendation letter to anyone who you wished to go work for next and you had also been given permission to spend the morning here and say goodbye to the few friends you'd made before leaving for the weekend. the paddock pass still valid but you had just wanted to leave and rest.
"well... this is it jameson," you say, stopping just outside the entrance. "please remember to stop posting shirtless pictures of you every other day."
"what am i going to do with out you?" he muses playfully. as much as he pisses you off, you will miss the occasional funny one-liner he has to offer. (he is quite funny but you will never admit that aloud)
"start acting more responsibly," you answer for him and roll your eyes when he gives you a jameson hawthorne grin.
"where is the fun in that?"
"i'm going to leave before they decide to rehire me," you joke and try to move past him, but he grabs your hand stopping you.
"i will miss you." he pauses for a beat. "... a little."
"i know jameson," you smile softly and tug your hand free. "i'll see you round the paddock."

so it hasn't been a great day, you just got laid off and now your card declined when you tried to get food after free practice one. groaning you open your bank app in you phone wondering why the hell it just declined when a smooth british accent reaches you.
"its okay i'll pay for it."
you look up to see lando norris grinning at you as he steps forward.
"are you sure? i can just drink water," you offer, your head already pounding at the thought of no coffee.
"i saw your tumble earlier, you lost a coffee in the process, you're basically owed one now," he smiles at you as he pays.
great even more people saw you completely faceplant.
the line shuffles along and you're pretty much ushered to the side with lando. you wait for your order in comfortable silence before he turns to you and asks, "did you get fired this morning?"
way to be direct. you sigh and force a smile, "but yeah, why do you ask?"
"jamie has been acting weird, he literally stormed into mclaren hospitality and asked if we had available jobs," he smiles at you knowingly.
your eyebrows raise. "what?"
"yeah, he pestered zac about it so much i had to leave before i saw something that would probably be a crime."
that shocks you even more - why on earth would he be doing that? - and unwillingly a smile sneaks its way onto your face, "so what you've come to scout me out? see if you should hire me?"
lando smirks. "maybe, i've heard you're rather good at p.r."
"that i am," you hum. when your order is called you quickly grab it and follow lando out of the building, soaking in the sun and sipping on your iced coffee.
"is this where we part ways, mr norris?" you ask turning to him a smile that you dont hate on your face.
"it is..." he says. "unless you'd like to spend the rest of the afternoon in mclaren with me? i'm pretty much just free for the remainder."
you were about to say yes when a feeling tugged on you, like you were betraying jameson or ferrari. which is ridiculous considering you were let go hours ago. but the tight feeling was more jameson related. which of course you ignored and said yes to lando.

towards the end of the day you had pretty much become friends with everyone in mclaren, they were all very welcoming and kept offering you food. which in your humble opinion is the best way to a girls heart.
lando had been tugging you around introducing you and being the ever present yapper on your arm - which wasnt unpleasant. he talked you through the history of mclaren and passionately mentioned his hate for fish multiple times. he even somehow managed to give you, someone who famously never gives, nor accepts phone numbers, his number and an idiotic contact name.
you were contemplating actually asking if there was a job available here when an unwelcome visitor stormed into the main lobby.
jameson was scowling at lando like he was the dog shit on the bottom of his shoe. and proceeded to stalk over and interrupt your conversation by demanding to speak to you.
"hi jameson, manners still exist, its good to see you too," you say in your no-nonsense pr voice. "have you met lando? he's also apart of this conversation," you motion to the brit next to you sporting a smirk.
"i want to talk to you." a pause. "please."
sighing you roll your eyes and wonder how the hell you felt anything (loyalty it was loyalty....) towards jameson earlier. clearly the single day of freedom didnt help him in anyway whatsoever.
"i'm sorry lando but apparently i have to deal with this overgrown man child, it was lovely spending the day with you. i'll text you later." you said that last part just to piss jameson off, but why would it annoy him in the first place?
"no worries, i'll talk to you later," he smirks and walks away shaking his head.
"what do you want jameson?" you sigh, realising the stupidness of the moment, you a former ferrari employee, standing in a mclaren building, talking reluctantly to perhaps one of the most famous drivers at the moment.
what has your life come to?

"but why? you were doing better, fred didn't see any reason to keep me on," you frown, this is not where you expected this going.

now he's staring at his phone after sending two texts off to the poor person who got caught in the middle of everything. the first was was extremely creepy, so he had followed up with a clarification text. both of which you have read, neither of which you have replied to. he couldn't blame you either, he wouldn't respond if he were you.
apparently my wife: we probably should talk
don't ask about the contact name, xander got ahold of his phone.
surprise lights inside of him and he quickly shoots off another text before deciding to change your contact name and add a contact picture for you, quickly scouring the internet for one.
what? he liked his phone to be organised. was it his fault that the first photo he saw was the one from tonight? yes, he had stalked your instagram during his panic. no.

grayson couldn't help the smile that crept onto his face. he would have to talk to alisa in the morning and start to solve this whole situation - which he caused - but for now he could just relax and re-live the night.
which when you think about it, doing something this stupid isn't exactly something you can relax thinking about. but thats what re-imagining is for, what would've happened if he had said something else.
it was really quite juvenile of him to be doing this instead of actually doing something. but if the hours of therapy he has suffered through have taught him anything its that; he is allowed to relax.

"no amount of money will ever get me to abandon my plans of you and grayson."
"what about a beating? cause you're about three point five seconds away from getting an ass whooping."

"so after all that, what do we do?" you ask the lawyer - who was introduced as alisa - on the video call. you all (and by all you mean alya has been lurking in the background) had been talking with grayson and alisa for the better part of an hour.
"you'll have a fake marriage it until it blows over, and then have a mutual divorce and go your seperate ways," does that sound like something you can do?" she looks to the screen. "you would only need to meet up a few times for photos, then we'll hard launch. after that you'll be 'long distance' and will need to make a few public appearances to keep up with the story."
yeah ok sure that seemed simple enough, because who doesn't know how to fake a marriage? its clearly something that happens on a daily basis.
alya's grin relfects on the screen, and you can see how extremely large it is behind you. alisa genuinely looks concerned, "is your friend okay?"
you turn over your shoulder to look at her, "yeah she just has... problems."
you all talk for a while longer alisa arranging some dates for 'wedding photos' before you leave texas, before promising to call both of you later on today with more information. she leaves the call and its just you and grayson (and alya) left.
"i guess i'll see you in a few days," grayson says his voice crackling through the speakers. "i'll arrange for transport to pick you up."
"thank you," you smile and roll your eyes when alya lets out a screech behind you. "i promise the the dork behind me wont be there."

literally this was the most gorgeous wedding gown you'd ever seen in your life and you were wearing it.
how had your life come to this?
a bang sounds from the doorway and grayson strides into the room looking like the god that he is in his suit. he's sporting a smile and greeted you and a determined looking alisa.
"how is everyone this afternoon?" he asks, looking at you.
"good, a little nervous but good," you answere back.
"alright, lets get started on these photos, we only have a certain amount of time before the sun sets and this is the only day your schedules align before y/n leaves," alisa says setting things in motion.
five minutes later you're standing in a garden on the edge of a fountain with grayson hawthorne's hands wrapped around your waist as he stares up at you.
ten minutes later you're in another dress - this one even more beautiful - standing atop a small hill being dipped by grayson hawthorne while he whispers jokes in your ear to make it less awkward.
fifteen minutes later you're standing on the steps of the castle esque building with you and grayson underneath your veil still joking trying to diffuse the tension. you had caught him looking at you a few times when you were focused on other things.
thirty five minutes later you're about to kiss grayson hawthorne for the very first time.
"are you alright?" he asks for probably the thousandth time as the photographer and alisa go over last second details, arguing over where you should be standing.
"yeah, i think so," you whisper.
"if you're uncomfortable, we stop, you know that?"
"yes."
"good."
"ok lovebirds," alisa calls out to you. "its time, we'll only do this once or twice so no need to panic."
grayson turns to you again and waits for your small nod before he gently presses his lips to yours.
the kiss is simple, soft and almost caring, nothing big, but also... its nothing small either. you're kissing grayson hawthorne.

you pull back from the kiss in a bit of a daze, grayson seems to be in one too. he's staring at you like you're a rare jewel, its a look you could get used to if you're honest. neither of you move for a moment simply standing there looking at each other, the sunset causing grayson to literally glow, he looks beautiful in the sunlight.
"that was perfect guys," the photographer says breaking your moment, looking down at the camera. alisa is watching you with interest, her eyes lightly creased. "really it look amazing."
grayson clears his throat and looks away from you - he only just looked away? "are we all finished?"

they move like a chain, wounding around tables and chairs, dodging waiters until they reach you, who is only now realising why alya wanted a big table tonight.
"hi y/n," max smiles and gives you a hug squeezing you a little more tightly than considered okay. she's up to something, same with alya, she's avoiding eye contact.
"okay everybody! sit! sit! dinner cannot wait!" alya announces to the group amidst the greetings, pulling out a chair and shoving you into it.
"more like you're hungry and you want to eat," you mutter as she pats your shoulder.

dinner had been served and the conversation had been flowing freely when it happened. avery was smiling at jameson as he whispered sweet somethings into her ear, staring adoringly at her. max, xander and ayla were in a deep conversation about libby and nash and how they were missing out on this drama.
grayson, was being grayson. quiet and stoic occasionally stealing glances at you. he had left for the bathroom when it happened.
"well hey there pretty girl," a slurred voice comes from beside you, and you feel a disgustingly warm presence beside you. "what are you doing here all alone?"
"i'm clearly not alone," you deadpan motioning around to the full table.
"but you are alone for me," he slurs leaning towards you.
"if you don't remove yourself from my seat in the next five seconds, you will be forcibly removed," the cold voice brings a wave of relaxation over you.
never once had you thought you would feel this comforted over a voice, but here you are.
"relax man i'm just talking to my girlfriend here," the freak tries to grab your wrist but you slap it away.
"if you ever talk about my wife that way again, you will not live to see the light of day."
ok.
um.
yeah.
no.
you're not okay.
"so step away from this table and get out of my line of sight now. and don't even think about coming near me or her ever again." the man scrambles away his suit crumpled and the strong waft of alcohol leaving.
his words - even under false pretences - make butterflies erupt in your stomach. and you think, you think, that being grayson hawthorne's wife would not be the worst thing in the world.
a cool strong hand wraps around you upper arm and guides you gently out of the chair and towards the stairs that lead to the rooftop bar. he leads you halfway up the stairs, and brings you to a stop on the darkness.
"are you okay?" his voice is low and urgent.
"did he touch you?"
you smile up at him, "i'm okay, he didn't touch me, he breath did though eugh."

red was the carpet that you walked on earlier.
it matched your dress.
alya, your very annoying plus one for tonight was wearing black.
there was a lot of things that happened tonight. a lot of things you were never going to forget. everybody you met and talked with... especially one of them...
"oh my god, pheebs and ki are going to be so jealous," alya squeals - quietly of course, you're still surrounded by people, and although sometimes you think alya could actually fight god and win, in public, she's behaving surprisingly calm.
well calm adjacent.
its not exactly seen as calm and collected when you're jumping up and down every three seconds when you see another celebrity walk past preparing for the carpet.
to her credit though she has somehow managed to get the numbers of four actors and singers in the thirty minutes you've been here.
you were lined up at the end of the carpet along with a few other select interviewers, waiting for the start of the event. alya was a bundle of nerves when margot robbie and zendaya stopped for their interview barely getting a few words out and opting to just hold the camera instead.
when xander and jameson arrived though, that was a different story. you'd think they were life long friends. you chatted with max of course, promising to invite her to your next book sleepover, jameson was suspiciously quiet and smirk-y and xander kept looking over his shoulder a shit eating grin on his face.
you knew what was about to happen.
pictures don't do him justice.
that was to be expected, of course. you don't have millions of people following you, or watching your every move for no reason.
the screams on the red carpet, increased when he stepped foot on it, pleas to look at the camera, answer questions, how to pose, everything. he seemed to follow along well, looking hauntingly beautiful in his suit, his face practically carved but when he scanned the large crowd twice over before his eyes settled on you, it went quiet.
he smiled - and by the way it was really hot gorgeous - and you smiled back, a private moment between the two of you in the middle of chaos.
which was totally ruined when alya latched onto your arm and freaked out that she could see grayson.
"oh my god, he's like ten feet away. ohmygodohmygod!" she squealed.
"yeah i know, i can see him," you mutter back, attempting - and failing - to stop her jumping up and down.
"but he's like right there and he's looking at you!"
"i know."
"oh, oh, oh he's coming over to us now, oh my god i think i'm going to faint, hold me."
when the grayson hawthorne stopped in front of you a soft and rare smile on his face you faltered slightly - not because of alya standing there with her mouth agape, because... wow - before raising the microphone and starting.
"hi grayson, its lovely to meet you, i'm y/n."

you should've know alya would have a shit eating grin the entire interview. it was tempting to punch her, very tempting.
"i honestly think divine rivals is my favorite book i've read this year," grayson's deep voice answers your question. his eyes stay on your face and he has a soft smile.
alya is elbowing you now. and you nudge her back as you ask your next question, smiling because now there are even more cameras on you.
"okay," you smile laughing nervously. "now i've asked everyone this tonight, i have a youtube channel."
"oh right yes, i follow you," grayson's voice is calm and his eyes are still on your face.
"you do?" with all of the things that are happening you weren't actually expecting him to be following you.
"yes, you're videos have become a guilty pleasure almost."
if anyone was wondering alya is losing her shit next to you. she has the biggest grin on her face, she's whipped out her camera and is taking an excessive amount of pictures.
"thats really sweet of you," a smile is present on your face now and you raise the microphone to ask your question, ignore the now fully smile grayson has on his face at your flustered-ness. "anyway my question was, do you have anything you want to say, a quote or just anything you like to tell the people watching?"
you turn the mic over to him and he looks down at you with a fond expression on his face - your insides are butterflies now - before looking at the camera.
"i'm going to say, you've made a good decision following this girl. she's a lovely person and keep supporting her," he pauses for a second, "and read divine rivals."
you laugh and nod at the camera, "i agree 100%." turning back to him you start. "well thank you for your time tonight, grayson, it was lovely to getting to know you," you look over to the over excited alya who's just standing back and nodding as if she's a proud mother. "and maybe we'll see you inside."
"hopefully we will," grayson smiles and waves slightly before moving on to the next interviewer.
