Instead of doing the Spring Write-On competition, I’ve been playing with the Tuxedo Kittie app. Look at my (lazy, sleepy) dapper cat.
A response on Unionists vs Nationalists 1900-1925
From my current history module (Ireland 1900 - 1925) I have concluded that Unionism generally had the best politicians, Nationalism did not - Collins, Griffith, De Valera being the notable exceptions - and that John Redmond was a useless fucker.
Redmond came very close to greatness in uniting the fragmented IPP after Parnell's dramatic fall divided the party between Parnellite politics and Parnellite leadership following the O'Shea affair. Not only did he manage this, but also got Home Rule on the Statute Book in 1914. His fault lay in not being able to adapt the party to the new demands of the Irish - independence. After the collapse of the Middleton plan (1918) where both southern Unionists and Constitutional Nationalists were prepared to settle their differences, he died, an unfortunate but hard working pragmatist. Effective figures of Unionism include : Arthur Bonar Law, Lord Randolph Churchill - they will be discussed later. Effective at whipping up support for Ulster Unionism, however part of their success must be attributed to the fact that they had the support of much of the British Conservative Party, and supporters of Imperialist arguments. Nationalist leaders had a much more difficult goal - uniting a fragmented party & electorate behind a fluctuating goal, to which they could not always agree on themselves.
I had this HUGE long response written to a post about the difference between Irish people and Irish Americans, but I don’t think I’ll post it.
What it basically boiled down to was: Irish-Americans who’s ancestors assimilated into the USA circa the 1800s know FUCK ALL about what it feels like to...
A response to Irish/v Irish Americans and origins:
Following the Great Famine: 1845-9 - 1.1million Irish died and 1.5 million Irish emigrated - their main choices of settlement: England and America It is worth noting that between 1793 - 1815, 33,000 Irish people per year were also emigrating abroad, either to the USA or England. Effects of this shift are noticeable from as early as 1858, when Republican Nationalist group The Irish Republican Brotherhood found their organisation both in America and in Ireland, and that their rising in 1867 happens both on the Canadian border, as well as in England.
American influence is also apparent during the end of WW1 with regards to the Ango-Irish Treaty. - Americans were able to pressure British into making Irish concessions as they had a vetted interest in Irish Nationalism, many successful Irish Americans still supported Irish independence. Irish Americans of today may feel distinctly removed from their emmigre ancestors, however to disregard their historical links would be to undermine their place in Irish history.
How come he hasn’t come back yet?

I am come of the seed of the people, the people that sorrow; Who have no treasure but hope, No riches laid up but a memory of an ancient glory My mother bore me in bondage, in bondage my mother was born, I am of the blood of serfs; The children with whom I have played, the men and women with...
