(incoming hockey rant); mack vs sid similar play elements
if anyone ever tells you mack and sid don't look almost identical on the ice you punch them in the face ~ a breakdown ~ because people are pissing me of š«
a) low center of gravity / sliding through contact
low center comparison;
they both skate with a low center of gravity and strong edge control. sid has always been hard to knock off the puck, and mack is already building that reputation.
they also both slide through and not AWAY from contact/defenders on open ice it's fucking beautiful to watch.
sid; sliding through contact/defenders
mack; mack uses this exact same movement pattern in tight spaces, hips back and STRAIGHT THROUGH defenders.
b) tight turns / cut-backs / curling along boards
another shared habit is the cut-back along the boards... instead of forcing speed, both slow down instead, turn back, and reset.
this means they also use tight small circles to maintain control in the offensive zone.
sid; famously curling along the boards
-sid usually turns one and a half times
mack; does the same curling mottion to buy time. It keeps defenders chasing and extends zone time.
- tiny mack spins + this is his own extra flash, he likes to turn twice
b) general postion/posture
their postion/posture while skating is also very similar. both carry the puck slightly behind their body and shield with hips and shoulders. It makes them extremely difficult to separate from the puck + but this does cause very tense muscles and complications later in a cereer
c) comfortable below goal line / tight space play
both are also comfortable playing below the goal line. it shows a similar confidence in tight spaces.
sid; builds much of his game there
mack; already gravitates to those areas ALOT.
d) deceptively physical / winning puck battles
thereās also a VERY physical element to both! they win puck battles through balance and positioning rather than brute force. (and HOW low they manage to get down, everytime my thighs burn watching them)
other similarities; id say the way they take/receive a pass from someone and just stick handling in general is also extremely similar.
big differences; mack is generally the faster, more explosive straight-line skater vs sid relies more on balance, and goes in wider almost round (?) lines.
conclusion;
i would honestly say its a coincidence but I don't think so. i truly wonder how many hours of footage mack studied of sid in his childhood. (yes this did become SO MUCH more noticeable after the summer training in halifax they had together)
day (??) of the offseason. losing my sight and hearing. today's sharks related activity: finding will's brunette harem's comments on his old insta posts. what's been dug up after archaeological work:
i've had enough.

Pathetic leno, who always comes off as even more pathetic, lost to the last person he ever wanted to lose to, his exās new bf.
Cursed mack, whoās never won anything, led the team as captain for the first time at Worlds, but couldnāt even take home a bronze.
Lucky smitty, who has severe lucky girl syndrome. Out there doing charity work playing drake maye softball.
But the best part: Cursed "loser" boy king Mack, who has never won a thing and has trouble taking pride in himself, and "lucky girl" will, whose achievements, despite his hard work, are always written off as luck, are now soulteammates playing together on the Sharks.
And everything falls into place. They complement each other perfectly. The curse will be broken, and the dedication hidden behind all that luck will finally be seen.
ryan leonard: guy of all time
i started assembling this post because i was looking for a quote (that i haven't even FOUND by the way) and was collecting too many other good quotes to not compile them. so now i'm sharing my life's morning's work with you all. please enjoy my leno thesis.
Hello I am kindly asking for characterization notes on one Zeev Buium because who is that guy, where did he come from, and how is he involved in all of this? I feel like he just spawned in one day and I would love just a few Crumbs of Context please
ask and ye shall receive! (thank you to @workingforitallthetime and @silveredsticks for helping compile all the sources for this, and to @frostbeees for always keeping the archives well-sourced!!) tried to keep it manageable, but, well. turns out there's quite a bit of zeev/mack and zeev/will lore, so please enjoy my best efforts to at least keep things organized :)
Itās the way that Mack wants to win, so desperately, because he never has. In his short but impressive career so far, if there was a team trophy or gold medal to be won, Mack has never won it.
The Chicago Steel lost in the first round of the USHL Clark Cup Playoffs during the 2022-23 season. While playing for Boston University for the 2023-24 season, Mack had a chance to win three team titles. BU lost to Northeastern in the 2024 Beanpot Final, then they lost to Boston College in the 2024 Hockey East Conference Championship, and finally, BU lost to Denver in the 2024 NCAA D1 Frozen Four semifinals.
Representing Canada in five international tournaments, Mack has won a medal twice: Bronze at the 2023 IIHF U18 World Championship and Silver at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympic Games.
Heās the only North American first overall pick in the NHL in the last decade without a gold medal representing his country. Six of the last ten first overall picks have won gold: four Canadians and two Americans. Mack is the only Canadian of the bunch without a gold medal to his name. The other three without a gold medal are from Slovakia, Sweden, and Switzerland respectively.
Including USHL, NCAA, and representing Canada internationally, Mack has played in nine tournaments for either a team championship trophy or a gold medal. Despite his best efforts, he has not won any of them.
āMacklin Celebrini, the boy who has never won
So excited about macklenobowl. Cursed, never won anything mack vs. pathetic and always came off as even more pathetic leno. cannot decide whose loss will make the narry more delicious.
My favourite theme š
Will and Mack 24/25 offseason lorešā
off the back of my marmon timeline, a lot of you guys seemed interested in learning about key willmack events, so here's everything (that i remember) that melted the timeline the last off season for you!
-> Both Will and Mack compete at Worlds 2025! šØš¦ šŗšø
this was a suuuuper fun time, because both the team canada and team usa rosters were absolutely STACKED with nhlers and canada and the usa were in different group stages (also playing in two different locations: denmark and sweden), so everyone was pretty much hedging their bets on a canada-usa final!
team canada: sidney crosby, nathan mackinnon, konecny, sandheim, oāreilly, fantilli etc, AND marc-andre fleury in net who sid literally coaxed out of near-retirement for one last tournament together. this team meant business!
team usa: clayton keller, tage thompson, brady skjei, swayman and daccord in net. this team meant business too - they were looking to win their first tournament in NINETY TWO years!
will was also surrounded by his friends such as zeev buium, matty beniers, cutter gauthier, and logan cooley (yes, mack's nemesis from the mammoth)...
this would have been the first time will and mack played each other since facing off in the ncaa hockey east final where bc triumphed over bu 6-2 (and more importantly will had FOUR goals and an assist in comparison to mack's one goal). so they were both super excited at the opportunity to play against each other:
āYeah, I am,ā Smith said with a big smile, excited about potentially playing against Celebrini. Celebrini said heās excited to play against his best friend and San Jose Sharks teammate.
okay miss diva
need to ask an expert: what was Mackās living situation when he was with the Steel? you always see cute stories from billet families of the 1st overall but I donāt remember any for him.
Thank you to Lennon and @julyberet for being Steel experts and having #connections
From what we have gathered, Jayden Perron was Mack's roommate and they were living with Ryan McBride's family. It seems to be the Steel's way to have two guys living with a family but not really spending much time with the fam as to prioritize team bonding.
The roommates are also intentionally chosen for personality matches and Jayden was paired with Mack to help acclimate him since he's known to be friendly and Mack takes some time to warm up.
