Julia determines that the solution lies in Collinwood, and she soon finds out that she’s right. Fascinated with blood disorders since medical school, Julia knows a vampire when she sees one. Julia and Barnabas form a contract—she offers him the chance for a cure to his condition, and in exchange, she gets to study him as they protect each other’s interests. Though she knows not to let herself trust Barnabas too closely, Julia starts to lose the distinction between scientific and personal interest, and she develops feelings for the vampire that go beyond a doctor and her patient. To protect Barnabas’s secret, Julia will lie and and commit malpractice and push her ethical boundaries to their limit—but will she kill for it?

Josette du Pres arrives at Collinsport from Martinique in 1795 without knowing a word of English. The man she’s supposed to marry, Jeremiah Collins, is currently away, and the only other member of the family who speaks her language is Jeremiah’s nephew, Barnabas. As Barnabas teaches her English in preparation of meeting her betrothed, he starts to fall in love with her. Lonely and homesick, Josette is flattered by his warm attentions, but then she meets Jeremiah, and she discovers the difference between infatuation and love. Even after she and Barnabas both marry other people, Barnabas continues to court her, giving her gifts and insisting that she loves him back. Josette pities him, but one night, pity turns to hate when Barnabas comes to her a changed man. His skin is paler, his eyes are ringed with dark circles, and when he speaks, Josette sees the glint of his cruel fangs. Barnabas has become a vampire, and he wants to make Josette his eternal bride. Josette desperately runs from him, but he pursues her all the way to the top of Widows’ Hill, grabbing and biting her. With her remaining strength, Josette gives Barnabas one last defiant glare before plunging off the cliff to her death on the rocks below.

Today, Josette’s ghost is still connected to the portrait of her that hangs in the Old House, and Josette finds a freedom in death that she never had in life. When supernatural enemies strike at Collinwood, Josette fights to protect the Collins family. When Barnabas arrives and starts looking for young women to replace her, Josette is determined to save them from making the terrible choice that she had to make so many years ago—the choice to die rather than to give herself over to a monster.
