i have once again updated the prism squad's civilian and hero forms! this shall be an annual ritual. minor tweaks here and there but they're still basically the same.

Its eye-stache isn’t the most fascinating thing about this trilobite. With its big eyes, it’s thought that the animal swam in the open waters to hunt for plankton.

Variegated squirrels (Sciurus variegatoides)
Accurately named, this squirrel has a wide variety of morphs, and is found throughout the Spanish speaking North and Central American countries in many habitats. They range from pure black to pure white, with different ratios of red in between. Have I mentioned that tropical squirrels are the best? (left to right)
Pure black
A very dark red with black hairs mixed in to create a grizzled brown effect.
Bright red/orange with a very sharp black stripe
Same, but slightly less sharply defined markings
A white headed individual with both a black and white stripe
Similar, but with grey instead of black, giving it a softer effect
No red at all, simply black and white
Pure creamy white
what If squid convergently evolved with waterfowl?
Ah, that’s a classic one
gosh, Stolper, I hope you dont mind me hijacking this post but I have great news. You probably already know this, cause you have some mad trivia up your sleeve, but far to few online do know that “flying” squid exist :D
Todarodes pacificus live in the pacific and glide much like flying fish for around 30 metres through the air at an astonishing speed of over 11 metres per second. It is not yet clear if they glide to escape predators or just to travel with low energy consumption.
*ride of the valkyries plays*
I guess I had sort of heard of flying lemurs before and shoved them into the “basically another flying squirrel” box in my head. Turns out they’re a little weirder than that.

Yellow Mongoose Cynictis penicillata
It lives in open country, semi-desert scrubland and grasslands in Angola, Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. The yellow mongoose will often co-exist with Cape ground squirrels or meerkats and share maintenance of the warren, adding new tunnels and burrows as necessary. It feeds on insects, small animals, eggs, grass, and seeds.

If there’s any equivalent to carcinization in mammals, it’s turning into an otter-beaver-like semi-aquatic form.
Because it just keeps happening.
Modern examples alone include otters, beavers, muskrats, giant otter shrews, desmans, aquatic genets, yapoks, lutrine opossums, and platypuses – and in the fossil record there were early pinnipeds, remingtonocetids, pantolestids, stagodontids, and Liaoconodon going as far back as the early Cretaceous. Even outside of the true mammals there were also Castorocauda, Haldanodon, and Kayentatherium during the Jurassic, and much further back in the late Permian there was the early cynodont Procynosuchus.
So a non-cynodont synapsid doing the exact same thing really isn’t all that surprising.
Perplexisaurus foveatus was a member of the therocephalians, a group of synapsids that were close evolutionary “cousins” of the cynodonts-and-true-mammals lineage. Similar in size to a modern rat, about 20cm long (8"), it lived in Western Russia during the Late Permian about 268-265 million years ago.
At the time this region was a river plain with a tropical climate, experiencing seasonal floods that turned the whole area into what’s known as “viesses” (a name based on the abbreviation “V.S.S.” standing for “very shallow sea”), vast shallow lake-seas that persisted for weeks or months at a time.
So this little animal has been interpreted as being semi-aquatic, swimming around and feeding on aquatic invertebrates and tiny fish and amphibians. Its skull had numerous pits around the front of its face, suggesting that it had a highly sensitive snout – probably whiskery, allowing it to hunt entirely by touch in dark murky water, but it’s also been proposed to have possibly had an electroreceptive sense similar to modern platypuses.

This is.... Absurdly cute. What the fuck.
It's worth noting that the reason the beaver wants the water to be deeper in the first place is that the Beaver is using the deep water as a pantry:
All summer and fall, beavers gather up branches with the leaves they actually eat, and store it in the deep end of the Pond, where the cold water and limited oxygen keep the leaves fresh all winter, so when it's negative 20 outside, a beaver can take a dip out of it's lodge, grab some refrigerated leaves in the (relatively) warmer water and go back to it's cozy little nap hole while everything else is out there suffering and eating bark or the like.
So it's less "there's a leak in my house" and more "OH SHIT THE FRIDGE!!"

Gradually, signs began to appear that the Spanish beaver (Castor fibre) was progressively inching closer to Portugal.
"For the first time in 500 years, the European beaver has been seen in Portugal, a moment that one nonprofit has called “one of the most significant steps in the aquatic rewilding of Portuguese rivers.”
As GNN has reported in the case of the UK, there is no animal other than humans capable of engineering its natural environment at the same scale as the beaver, and it’s clearly this trait which has Portuguese ecologists jumping for joy.
Extinct in the small Iberian country since the 15th century, this large rodent has recently been reintroduced and restored in various parts of Portugal’s large neighbor. Gradually, signs began to appear that the beaver (Castor fibre) was progressively inching closer to Portugal, until recent camera trap footage confirmed the animal’s presence in the country.
“We’ve been on the lookout for this breakthrough for a few years now, and now we’re thrilled to confirm its return. The beaver is a natural ally in restoring the health of our rivers and wetlands and has a fundamental role to play in our river ecosystems,” says Pedro Prata, Team Leader at Rewilding Portugal.
Through its constant activity building dams, beavers transform landscapes into watery paradises for small fish, amphibians, invertebrates, insects, and birds. Their damning of rivers diverts water flow in various different directions, cuts channels for floodwater, and creates ponds and wetlands.
“We’re talking about a species that provides ecological services that no modern equipment can replicate with the same efficiency and scale, without costs and bureaucracy that can never be overcome. The beaver improves water quality, creates refuges for other species and helps us fight phenomena such as drought and fires,” emphasizes Prata.
Portugal suffers from both drought and wildfires, which the beaver’s impact can help prevent through the increased water retention in dryland soil, while the wetter lands beaver dams create act as natural fire breaks.
Beavers don’t only live in the forest, they will happily transform a desert river as well.
Rewilding Portugal, in an article celebrating the animal’s return, detailed how they have long since anticipated this arrival, and informed the relevant ecological authorities to prepare for the disruptive effects which beavers bring hand in hand with the positive ones.
France, Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland have all had to cope with the occasional dam-bursting flood, or an agriculturalist complaining about their riverside plantations being damaged, or someone getting their trees gnawed down. They cope with it in different ways, which Rewilding Portugal say is a worthwhile accommodation for the benefits the beavers bring.
Previously, GNN reported that Rewilding Portugal have reintroduced European wood bison into the Greater Côa Valley ecosystem. As the beaver does in water, the bison does on land: engineering the landscape into a biodiverse and resilient patchwork of micro-ecologies."

Naked mole rats ( Heterocephalus glaber ) have never been the most conventional mammal - the scrotum-looking creatures are resistant to cancer , can survive almost 20 minutes without oxygen, and can barely feel pain .
Instead of sticking to a glucose-based system, which is dependent on oxygen, when a naked mole rat is deprived of oxygen, it switches its metabolism so that its brain cells start burning fructose for energy instead of glucose.
Fructose can be turned into energy anaerobically - which means it doesn’t require the presence of oxygen to be broken down into cellular energy.
Until now, this anaerobic pathway was thought only to be used by plants.
