The circle is often associated with wholeness and unity in Islamic art and is a much used element in Omani design, where circular motifs and families of patterns are generated by the mathematical division of circles into smaller geometric components. Hexagons, octagons, squares and triangles are often used in combination with ellipses, smaller circles and other geometric elements to form elaborate medallion-like designs.
