it's been years and it's still genuinely crazy to me that the first two seasons of stranger things had this throughline where all the bad things that were happening in hawkins were directly caused by the us government and that they were excusing the awful things they were doing to their own citizens (children!) through cold war/red scare reactionism. and then in season three there was a secret russian base under the town mall.

thinking abt jonathan and max just being so damn similar.

thinking about how they both have mothers who love them and who they love back but who place too much pressure on them, accidentally or not.

thinking about how they're contrasted in how jonathan stepped up to be there for will and how no-one stepped up to be there for max.

thinking about how jonathan and max are still so kind, even if they put up an apathetic, aloofish or otherwise awkward front.

thinking about how people tried to make them into bullies, into people that would hurt other people, but they refused, because they were good people.

thinking abt these two images being them trying to figure out what to do because they've had to parent themselves or others.

🧍💭 ⬅️ that is me thinking about how will byers haunts the story even after being saved and how there are so many shots where he is still on the outside looking in (airport, rink o mania, the surfer boy kitchen, so on) and the "guys i'm still here" from season three and the fact he has now-memories tied to upside down, a place that is stuck in time, and the way that usually when he touches his neck it is also accompanied by him looking over his shoulder, as if looking back. because he is stuck on both the bad things and also on how life used to be before the bad things to the point where it's like he's stuck in time along with it. and when it's cold i'd like to die playing as he's being brought back to life, being frozen by fear, he likes it cold, shivers on the neck while looking back, frozen in time. ok i am not having fun anymore :(
