WE WANT YOU (if you are in London)
Some weeks ago we published a call out on our website for a new work that will be presented in January as a part of The Lone Wolf, the Dark Horse and the Underdog. As we have not yet said much about it on the blog here it comes:
ARTIST CALL OUT - The Lone Wolf, the Dark Horse and the Underdog
immigrants and animals (FI/UK) want to commission a London-based artist (or group of artists) to make a new performance to be presented as part of The Lone Wolf, the Dark Horse and the Underdog in London on the 16th January 2015. The night will be a triple bill including work by immigrants and animals, work from an invited Finnish artist and the commissioned performance.
This will be the first event in a series of exchanges happening both in Helsinki and in London. The intention is for it to be a place where we (immigrants and animals) can show our own work in a context and under conditions of our own choosing, rather than the context framed by another curator or framed by chance. We want to show the connections and contrasts between works made in the different environments we are working within. It is an approach to our baselessness that sees us creating in two different dance scenes and simultaneously outside of both.
The commissioning package will include a flat fee of £1000, 5 days (negotiable) rehearsal space and a performance as part of The Lone Wolf, the Dark Horse and the Underdog. We are looking to commission an artist or group for whom the liveness, the socialness and the bodiliness of performance is important to create a work that fits the context of the event.
The performance should be suitable for a black box theatre (please bear in mind there will be no raked seating) and last no more than 30 minutes. You must be available on 16th January for the performance, Sunday the 11th January for a technical rehearsal and Thursday 14th or Friday 15th to meet other artists involved. Rehearsals will take place between the 1st December and 10th January. Everyone involved should be over 16 years of age.
Upon selection we will meet with the artist/s to further discuss the proposed show.
50 words about anything (yourself, your work, the proposed show, whatever)
Preferred dates between 1st December and 10th January for rehearsal
Contact details (phone number, email, home address)
Link to a video trailer (hosted on Vimeo or Youtube) no longer than 3 minutes for the show you would like to make (Technical skills are not too important, nor is the quality of the recording necessarily. If you do not have access to equipment and would still like to apply then send us an email. If you for any reason it is not possible for you to send us a video and you would still like to apply then send us 3 minutes of audio. If for any reason this is not possible for you and you would still like to apply then send us a proposal in any form that is possible for you)
Following the deadline and selection, around ten submitted videos will be published on the immigrants and animals blog. Please only apply if this is okay with you. The intention behind this is to have a more transparent and generative application process.
We will make our selection based on the seeming relevance of the proposition to the other works to be presented in the evening and how excited we get whilst watching. We will take into consideration the number of people in the group when making our selection as we would want everybody to receive a fair wage.
The deadline for applications is midnight on the 16th November. We will be in touch on the 24th November.
immigrants and animals is a conceptual dance outfit of two with Jamila Johnson-Small and Mira Kautto. Jamila is based in London and Mira in Helsinki, we work between these bases. We make esoteric, trashy, critical, repetitive dance works as an attempt to resist other bullshit things in life.
We look forward to hearing from you,
The Lone Wolf, the Dark Horse and the Underdog is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
The same information can be found on our website too. We would love to hear form you and see what you want to make!
