Performers can’t fool me Ryan. They’re deceitful. Ambitious. And ruthless.
High School Musical 3: Senior Year (2008) dir. Kenny Ortega

Cal loved his friends. More than he might ever admit – or, at least probably more than he would ever admit to anyone besides Nick. And because Cal was usually reluctant to share anything so personal as his adoration for the people he loved, it took a special kind of person to see through that wall of cold defenses and actually take a shot at loving him back. The kind of person who would let Cal run off to get some alone time at his own birthday party and not act like he was a total bummer because of it. The kind of person who would want to give him a gift away from all the chaos and attention so he’d actually have some time and space to appreciate the kindness of the gesture.
He was sitting in the kitchen counter with his head leaning back against the cabinets, eyes closed, taking a deep breath, when he heard a familiar voice speak with a softness that had only recently become familiar as well. He smiled first, then opened his eyes and sat up slowly with his hands curled around the edge of the counter. The silly way she called him birthday boy made him giddy in a way that should have been embarrassing – but it was just the two of them, and he couldn’t care less about how goofy his grin was if Carrie was the only one around to see it. “Hey,” he echoed. His eyes flickered down to the adorable present in her hand before he looked back up at her with a slight frown. “You’re leaving?” Despite his apparent disappoint, he held his hands out and gestured for her to come closer. “You musta gotten me something pretty lame if you’re gonna run away right after handing it over.”
it had taken quality time spent around the male to figure out just who he was and what kind of person he was. unlike carrie and charlie, he wasn’t one to be the centre of attention. seemingly preferring to keep himself to himself other than the small group of friends he held dear to his heart, and it was something she admired. a factor that she felt incredibly lucky to be considered into – especially in the terms of how they used to be. the childish bickering and harsh jibes at one another feeling like a whole entire world away in contrast to how their relationship had developed to how it was today. the quality time together that they both once avoided like the plague now being what they both put immense effort into making happen, always finding time in their equally busy schedules for one another. but this was special. almost magical. in a way, calvin becker had already taught carrie so much about herself in such a short amount of time that she potentially may not have discovered otherwise.
noticing the grin at his lips only encouraged carrie’s own smile to grow. a silent confirmation that he wasn’t too bummed out about her swooping in and interrupting the private time he was enjoying in the peace and quiet. carrie had been enjoying herself anyway since first arriving at the party, loving that she was in the energetic company of nick t and charlie, but something about her mood had changed since entering the kitchen. in a good way. “ you look like you’re enjoying yourself. ” carrie’s voice was soft, her words followed by a quiet giggle. the butterfly sensation she was experiencing in that moment being one that had frequented her quite often, one that she had never experienced before he came along. a feeling that she had only shared with her diary rather than actually opening up to one of her friends. “ I was getting ready to call it a day on the birthday festivities . . . but not until I’d seen you. ” when did she become such a sap? the cold, rock hard façade that she usually presented to julie and flynn, or anyone that just wasn’t within her inner circle, completely gone from sight and mind whenever she was in his presence. “ I really thought they would’ve forced you to be out there with them. ”
moving closer upon his gesture, almost standing between his legs as he sat up on the kitchen counter, her smile shone so brightly. cheeks flushed with a blush so deep that she knew she had zero chance of it going away anytime soon. head tilted just enough so that her eyes were locked with his. “ I don’t know if you’ll like it. I was torn on what to get you ‘cause I wanted it to be something you would actually like . . . and use. ” handing the gift over to him, her empty hands then moved to now rest on the counter top. positioned on either side of his body. the neatly wrapped box containing a new set of drumsticks with a personalised message ( one that she hoped wasn’t too cringe for his liking ) etched onto one of the handles. “ I ended up getting my dad’s help with this one, without giving him too much information. he got me in touch with some old time rock drummer that knew more about this than I ever will. ”

Their close proximity didn’t allow him to focus on anything besides her disappointed expression. Though, there was nothing forcing him to watch the curve of her lips or the spark in her eyes as carefully as he was. It would have been so easy for him to stay like that. To just keep looking at her with that little pout on her face, basking in her attention while he forgot about what landed him in that precarious position in the first place. To be honest? He’d already nearly forgotten that there was even a party going on under the same roof.
“You,” he began in an almost-serious tone as he tilted his head to the side for emphasis, “have no reason to be sorry.” He sat up a straighter in attempt to appear a little less pitiful. As much as he had been enjoying her looking after him, he didn’t want her concern for him to ruin her night. “And it didn’t ruin my night.” He smiled, acting on some subconscious impression that the gesture would be contagious. With his next words he shook his head teasingly. “I’d been looking for an excuse to ditch that lame party anyway.”
They sat in a comfortable, familiar silence for a moment as her hands fell into her lap. Their eyes met, and once again Cal found himself thinking about how easy it would be to just sink into those few seconds of safety and let everything else around them melt away. Whatever comfort Cal was feeling then, Carrie must have been feeling it to – or else, he thought, she wouldn’t have let those words slip from her perfectly pink lips.
Cal’s eyebrows raised as much as they could without wincing, and his own lips spread into an annoyingly pleased grin. He held back any comments and let her rattle off her defence mechanisms as he continued to watch her, amused, nodding along in a way that was somehow both patient and patronizing. He waited until she was done speaking, still with that same, stupid, crooked smile on his face until he spoke up himself, and as if he hadn’t heard a word she said before her attempt at backtracking he said, “You think I have nice eyes?”
carrie didn’t want to show off just how guilty she felt over this happening at one of her events but all attempts at a genuine smile seemed to fail her and she just couldn’t help it. her close proximity to the male ( even under the circumstance of it all ) being enough to bring her a small source of comfort without him ever really knowing it. the outisde world and everything else happening just beyond the four walls of her room being so far from her mind that she hadn’t even considered anyone walking in and almost just witnessing the two of them really enjoying one another’s company and the privacy of it all. the only thing to even cross her mind in any capacity right now was indeed calvin becker.
lifting her head to him as he spoke, carrie nodded at his words slightly as she took them in. actually trying her hardest to convince herself that there wasn’t anything she could have done to prevent this situation, other than maybe just having a quiet saturday night for once. an idea that didn’t actually seem too mundane from now on after all – wanting nothing to more than to just kick everyone out and change into her embarrassingly comfy pyjamas now anyway. her party spirit not exactly at it’s peak anymore. “ it didn’t? ” was it the words or his own smile that caused her to begin to perk up? the world may never know. her own frown and pout swiftly changing into a genuine smile that was reserved for special people. cal’s next comment causing her to overdramatically but playfully roll her eyes, unable to stop herself from laughing. “ oh, I’m so sorry that my party didn’t live up to your super cool expectations. ” teasingly, she poked her tongue out at him.
how had they gone from kids that couldn’t be in the same room as one another to the ones that quite literally craved each other’s company? the highs and lows of teenage life and the feelings that came along with it!
the performer had tried to backtrack and to take back that one phrase in particular but all attempts failed. she had just very audibly complimented one of the features of him that she adored most and he had heard, almost immediately causing her to expect some sort of teasing along with it. the unspoken mutual rule between them being that they usually just kept their thoughts to themselves. noticing the grin on his face only causing her own grin on her face to grow, the blush on her face heating up drastically until she was almost a bright shade of red. for once in her life, her defences and protective barriers staying down in the comfort of cal’s presence. “ I – uhm . . . well yeah. I do think that you have nice eyes. ”
getting nervous and stumbling over her own words wasn’t a regular occurrence for carrie wilson and yet here she was, almost giddy over the entire thing. all because of him. rubbing her hands over her face gently and slowly in an attempt to return back to her natural shade, carrie breathed out softly as she looked back at him. giving her head a slight nod. “ they sparkle, and I’ve never noticed that before. ” gently fidgeting with the bracelets around her wrist, she moved to climb to her feet before sitting beside him. keeping their closeness.

“ you know you didn’t have to get me anything, right ? “ she asks after a pause, time she allows herself to marvel at how far they’ve come already. she touches the beautifully wrapped artificial arrangement with a smile on her face, meeting the other’s gaze a few moments later. she never thought she’d ever come so close to earning the girl’s forgiveness. she was almost tempted to question whether the cupcakes were poisoned ; a comment she’d usually have all the rights to throw around. but she looks at her —- & finally sees her friend again. the person who’s in her corner. “ thank you. easily the least boring gift i’ve gotten all year. “ hands reach towards the pastry stand next & she selects two cupcakes ; red velvet for her & the funfetti one is swiftly held out in front of the girl. “ don’t make a girl eat alone. “
“ yeah, I know — but I wanted to. ” carrie couldn’t help but smile at the female as she admired the floral arrangement herself, reminiscing on just how personal the choice of flower was to them. how it related so closely to rose, a woman so near and dear to both of their hearts. the one that had stepped up and raised them both simultaneously when carrie’s own mother had failed to do so. the same woman that would have been so proud of their efforts to reconcile if she was out there somewhere, looking down on them. any past arguments and fall outs that they may have had now seeming so silly when taken into consideration with everything else that they had faced. taking the cupcake being offered out to her, she couldn’t help but laugh softly at the action with the widest grin. “ you remember my favourite type of cupcake? ” of course she did. the little things like that that they had learnt so long ago was still tucked away firmly in their minds, the only difference being that now they weren’t making a conscious effort to push it away. taking the food, she peeled back the wrapper slightly. “ do you remember the sleepovers we used to have when we were younger . . . when we’d attempt to make our own cupcakes but just made a mess? ”

[ LISTEN ] : sender attentively listens to receiver as they speak. ( i.e., eye contact, leaning forward, nodding etc. )
CARRIE FELT LIKE A FOOL for burdening the becker twins with her presence while she was in this state. the amount of vulnerability on display in the current moment being more than she had ever shown in front of anyone other than her father — especially when the cause of it all was her mother. a topic that was avoided in discussion at all costs, the woman being the sole reason that carrie was the way she was. cold at times, calculated always, but most importantly, she worked her butt off. all effort put into her career more so to make the woman that had left her proud rather than her father ( as most people thought ). wiping her eyes, carrie smiled sadly at the boy as he leant in closer to their close embrace. “ I’m sorry that I piled all of this on you so late, cal. I thought that charlie would have been home to listen instead. ” not that she didn’t want to open up to him, she just assumed that his sister would have been happier to sit around and just listen to her talk. that carrie wouldn’t have been intruding on personal time that way. “ I just don’t understand how she can pick and choose when she wants to be a parent . . . how she just shows up when she feels like it. I wasn’t good enough for her when I needed her the most so why now? ”

CARRIE WASN’T SURE WHAT SURPRISED HER MORE — the fact that calvin becker had willingly stayed throughout the entire duration of a dirty candy performance set ( and seemed to be enjoying himself the entire time ) or that he had offered to walk her home afterwards. not that she was complaining. a bright smile lighting up her features almost immediately once the words had left his mouth. a response following, almost jumping at the opportunity to spend a little extra quality time together. “ you’re going soft on me, becker. ” the words were soft with a teasing undertone as the two walked together in a close proximity, never once moving too far of a distance from one another under the los angeles night sky. their closeness had grown in recent weeks and it was almost a miracle that nobody had questioned it as of late, especially not charlie. the girl was around each of them in large amounts respectively so if anyone was to click on, it would be her for sure. allowing her arm to ever so gently brush against his with every step, the female lifted her head just enough to make eye contact. “ thank you for this . . . all of it. ” stopping in her tracks momentarily with her eyes still set upon him, carrie gently reached for his arm. “ for being there at the show tonight, for walking me home when you didn’t have to. ” shivering slightly under the evening breeze, carrie used her hands to rub at her arms for a chance at warmth. feeling her face begin to heat up with blush as he offered his jacket, only taking it once he was certain and had reassured her he would be okay without it. allowing the boy to wrap the item of clothing around her shoulders. “ look at you being my knight in shining armour. what would I do without you? ”

MAKING A QUICK EXIT SEEMED LIKE THE PERFECT PLAN. not particularly in the mood to deal with anyone but herself after having julie and her hologram band steal the spotlight from dirty candy yet again, being disturbed was only going to cause her to burst into tears or to snap. and the last thing she wanted to do was to snap at one of her close friends and say something she didn’t mean. and luckily enough for her, it seemed to be working fairly well. or at least that was what she thought. right until she left the girl’s bathroom of the venue that had held the open mic showcase more than half an hour after the showcase had ended and ran straight into the likes of nick t. eyes widening at the surprise that he was even still around but more so at the fact that he had caught her after she had been crying, her mascara more than likely still smudged under her eyes. a wave of guilt washing over her at the look of concern on his face. “ nick, what are you still doing here? ”

THEY WERE GOING AROUND IN CIRCLES and it was beginning to get tiring. maybe she didn’t understand first hand, not being an actual ghost herself, but she could still see them . . . which was more than most people had. she was trying her hardest to be empathetic. to sit there and listen, but listening was next to impossible when the subject just wasn’t prepared to open up. “ then tell me, try to make me understand. look — I’m not going to sit here and pretend to know what your situation feels like but that doesn’t make me completely oblivious. ” a small but hopefully comforting smile began to show upon her lips, hoping to make her feel a little more comfortable. “ tell me what happened to you. ”

“ well, good for you. ”
CARRIE COULDN’T HELP BUT ROLL HER EYES. attempting to be nice wasn’t getting her anywhere, all attempts and gestures met with passive aggressive comments. life sure was a heck of a lot easier before her ability to see ghosts came alone. a simple life that most teenagers had, one that she only prayed that she could do back to now — where the only ghosts around her were her former friends emotional support himbos, and even then, she only ever thought them to be holograms. but now she had to contend with a brand new ghost. one that wasn’t just content with being up on stage, performing. “ listen, I’m just trying to be nice. ” and even that was relatively uncommon for carrie. had they not been alone, she more likely than not would have just left rain to her own resources. pretended she indeed couldn’t see the blonde moping around. “ I’m not a threat . . . I’m not here to bring you any more pain. ”

“ I like getting older. I feel like I’m finally aging into my personality. ”
IT MADE SENSE. for aslong as carrie had known cal, and even more so as of late as she truly got to know him, he had been old before his time. not necessarily in a bad way — he was just DIFFERENT from the other teenagers their age that surrounded them day in and day out in the halls at school. but if he enjoyed getting older then there was all the more reasoning to make a big deal and celebrate his birthday. even if he did just pout his entire way through the experience while pretending that he wasn’t enjoying himself in the slightest. since arriving at the small shindig organised by nick t for everyone’s favourite twins, carrie’s attention had been captured solely by charlie as she received an onslaught of birthday hugs and small gifts — gifts that had carefully been handpicked by her performer and personalised to a custom sense of uniqueness for the girl. items that she knew had meaning within their close knit bond or that she would just find useful in everyday life. BUT SHE HADN’T FORGOTTEN CALVIN EITHER. slipping away from the chaos when it was least likely to be noticed ( and after a short period of time subtly scouting through the crowd for a particular drummer ) carrie made her way into the quiet confinements of the kitchen, a place that was usually the first to crowd up in a gathering like this but not today. a small rectangular box, wrapped in signature baby pink gift paper, in hand. “ hey, birthday boy. ” the female’s voice was soft, her words accompanied by a smile that just radiated happiness. “ I just wanted to give you your gift before I head out. ”

“ what it be, girl? what you got going on, ma? it’s the freakin’ weekend. ”
CHARLIE WAS TRULY ONE OF A KIND. and it was one of the most important reasons as to why carrie adored her so much — even if there were particular occasions when she didn’t exactly understand a single word to leave the female twin’s mouth. such a contrast from what carrie had ever experienced with calvin . . . atleast before she truly began to get to know him. looking up from the magazine in her hands as she lay sprawled out across her bed, allowing the female full access to rumage through her closet, she couldn’t help but laugh softly. “ care to translate that into a language or phrasing that I would understand? ” the teasing was playful, knowing full well that her bestfriend was able to handle it and then return an equally teasing, if not far more teasing, remark back in her own direction. “ or was that just your impression of a drunk frat boy? because if so, I think you NAILED it pretty spot on from my own experiences. ”
