GERARD’S OUTFITS - TOUR 2022 NORTH AMERICAN LEG
europe + sources
two of them :/
Mcr is n has been very beloved in the scene w a ton of other bands speaking so highly of em right from the start. Everything they did w Revenge was subversive for the time n Gerard came out the gate trying to be dangerous and to push as many boundaries as possible. Idk if Im interpreting you completely wrong but it sounds like u think Revenge was insincere/not authentic or something? Or like trying to be safe? But idk why that would b the case?
oh god no of fucking course not! what i’m saying is that eighteen years after revenge, their subversiveness and fluidity and revolutionary performance became commodified. what used to get them hailed as both faggots and heroes to the unheard became action figures. it became their Uniform. and they outgrew it. so to shove themselves back in their old suits, do exactly what the industry wants them to do, that’s the funniest fuck you they could pull. revenge was EVERYTHING to me and it’s BECAUSE it was completely fucking subversive. however it’s afterimage became something to capitalize upon, it was sanitized into Emo Boyband With Eyeshadow instead of what it actually was, which was subversive queer punk. my chem made fun of that sanitization today.
theyre the happiest theyve ever been and they literally dressed as caricatures of themselves at one of their lowest points and had the time of their lives doing it. do i even need to say it. you must fix your heart.
this show simultaneously showed how much they’ve changed and how they’re still the same. they’ve grown so far out of what they used to be, it’s hysterical to see them dressed like that again. but they’ve also always rejected the scene and the need to profit off of anything anyone enjoys. they took a shitty nostalgia cash grab festival and used it to make a statement on how important it is to allow yourself to age and change and leave the past in the past
they had the whole crew dress as nurses so it was like a nursing home. they put so much care into every little detail, really committing to the bit to drive that ‘fuck you’ home. x
that was insane. i mean even just them ending on vampire money was insane. but they shot out fake money at the crowd. that said vampire states of translymerica. they knew what the wwwy festival was about. they knew what they wanted to do. gerard lowered their voice like they did in the 2000s. ray and frank had seemingly rougher instruments to make it sound like it was 2005, i mean it looked like frank was playing pansy. mikey was covered in blood, and while i'm not 100% on this, i think it has to do with him dying young in ghost of you. they refused to play foundations, which was a 6 minutes song that went against everything that is currently popular in music. they didn't really play any deep cuts, they had old person sfx makeup and were in drag of themselves from fucking 2005. there are so many layers here. it's made even funnier by the crowd being dead and people leaving during the show. it will be made even funnier when bad reviews come out because that's the entire fucking point. this entire show was comedic and satirical genius. they said "you want nostalgia, ok we will give you that" and they did this. this isn't even everything but i think you get the point. this would've taken awhile to prepare for, so they have known what the wanted to do for awhile know. they knew what this was, they wanted to give people a good fucking show but they still wanted to make fun of everything the wwwyf was. and they fucking did. holy shit. and like i said before, no one will get this except people who know, the people who are in on the joke. not everyone is in on the joke. i can almost guarantee that a bad review will come out and it will solidify everything that they did on stage. the meaning behind it.
this show was for them. the revenge era wasn't a great time mentally for the band, we know that. and the band basically said "you want a nostalgia tour, from this specific point in our lives? fuck no fuck you" and they went and did this. it's just like frank said in the interview with two minutes to late night.
"This isn't a nostalgia tour, so we're not gonna do that, we're not gonna do the nostalgia tour of 'oh, remember us? I don't really fit in this any more but do you remember? I used to do that thing, you know...' so it's not that, man, and I'm glad, y'know, I think that would only be fun once."

this isn't a nostalgia tour, the entire point of wwwy seemed to be nostalgia. fuck that. they didn't buy into that.
drum said "nothing but the best" who wants to think about this in a dark room with me for 18 hours
i gotta admit i feel incredibly vindicated by all of this. i had started to wonder if MCR no longer cared about the fact that they were headlining a festival that by all rights is the complete antithesis of everything they stand for and the entire message they embodied throughout this tour. some of the individual members + their official social media pages had to advertise it and i get that there’s a certain level of PR expected with any event that big, but i did start to wonder if as famous celebrities they’d just accepted their need to show up and make the paycheck no matter what, or even if they didn’t mind being there at all because they love performing enough to not care about the marketing of this festival. and then they gave us ALL OF THAT. my chemical romance is going to be my chemical romance forever, just in the exact opposite ways festivals like this want. nothing can ever take away what makes them this raw and authentic and side-splittingly hilarious.
that must have taken weeks to plan. they knew from the start what this festival was all about. they’re actual fucking geniuses
