How to Write Dialogue for (most) Dream SMP Characters
A few months ago, I remembered seeing a lot of posts giving advice on how to write dialogue for DSMP Characters. And while those posts contained numerous helpful pointers, overall, they fall just short of capturing what it means to write in a character’s Voice.
Unique character Voices, while tricky to get right, are usually achieved by giving each character a distinct set of words to say, in a manner that distinguishes them from the rest of the cast.
With this in mind, I’ve spent the past few days combing through almost Thirty Hours of VOD footage to collect nearly all of the unique words, phrases, and speaking habits of every major and minor character on the Dream SMP (involved in 2+ story arcs.)
Before Reading:
Sentence-Starters are single words or phrases which begin a sentence. (ie. “Y’know, maybe you should try something different.”)
Sentence Paddings are reoccurring words added to the middle of sentences. (ie. “It’s like he just can’t cry.”)
Sentence Endings are single words or phrases which end a sentence. (ie. “There’s no need to fight, I hope.”)
All three of these types can be combined with one another to create more natural-sounding sentences. For instance, if a character has the two Sentence-Starters “Okay” and “So,” they can be used like this; “Okay, so, I’m a bit worried.”
(Note: When certain traits or phrases aren’t obvious with how they should be applied to dialogue, an (ie.) will be added below to illustrate them.)
Wilbur
General Traits:
Repeats himself for emphasis. Sometimes these repetitions will add additional information. More often, this repetition is focused around a specific word with the circumstance of the sentence being changed each time.
ie. “I’m living in an eternal limbo again. I’ve been through limbo, I’m out of limbo, and socially, I’m still in this limbo.”
Highly eloquent in language, bordering on poetic.
Highly introspective; significantly less so after Eret’s betrayal and onward.
Occasionally makes literary analogies and references, sometimes breaking the Fourth Wall to do so.
Curses semi-frequently. Wilbur is the only known character to use the word “cunt,” although rare.
Common Go-To Swears - Fuck, Shit, Prick, Bastard, Hell, Ass (Including all variations and combinations.)
Tends to hum when he thinks to himself.
Stutters most often when offended, shocked, or surprised.
Generally addresses characters semi-formally, often by title or role.
Often slips into long-form monologues when self-reflecting.
Usually defaults to being the head of a conversation; introducing, managing, and elaborating on topics throughout, especially when speaking to three or more people.
Circumstantial Phrases:
You and I, we’re ━ (To connect positively with someone.)
ie. “You and I, we’re used to seeing the good in people.”
I wanna pick your brain / Can I pick your brain? (To ask about someone else.)
Don’t say that, I’ll cry (Affectionate banter, only to Tommy.)
I’m afraid ━ (When hopeless or delivering bad news.)
ie. “I’m afraid there’s no getting out of this now.”
There’s no reason to ━ / There’s no reason for ━ / There’s no need for ━ (When being threatened or breaking up a fight.)
ie. “There’s no need for violence, gentlemen.”

techno :)
sorry now i am thinking about my tntduo accidental pregnancy au w/ the tntduo fankids eliza and angelica again. yes angelica and eliza like in hamilton. they were twins. mpreg'd that bird. the plot was facinating. had a lot of interesting fundy interactions. had philza being an insane grandfather. kristin possessed him to meet her grandkids. the most insane family drama wrt wilburs stepdad adjacent qpr/whateverthefuckphilzaandtechnohavegoingon with techno and quackity.
redraw of my pogtopia crimeboys art from two years ago!! i was never happy with that piece so i wanted to make a version that i could be proud of! :] anyways here's my vision of the very first night in the pogtopia ravine. (link to original piece)
i [____] you
sometimes i remember wilbur at the end of pogtopia throwing lapis going "have some blue" and get so sick. how do you want to pretend ghostbur and this guy are separate people when ghostbur's main fucking thing was started by wilbur at the height of his breakdown

Thinking about siren!techno and mermaid!wilbur being friends with very different hunting patterns and hobbies and stuff
Thinking about them again
Techno being able to track the scent of blood in the water, being the one to drag sailors in by the leg, dragging them down kicking and screaming, he’s the culprit behind the deadly rumors of this part of the ocean, he’s the killer behind all these lost souls at sea
Wilbur is the one who gets mistaken as Techno though. He lounges comfortably on a rock and watches the sailors panic and cower at the sight of him thinking that he’s going to lunge into the water and swim after them any second now, and unbeknownst to them, Techno’s already behind them and reaching a hand up from the water. Wil is the distraction and also the description for all those terrifying rumors. No one can recognize Techno as the man-killer because Wilbur is the only one who is seen above water by the very few survivors
Techno gifts Wilbur the trinkets and stuff he finds, in return for Wilbur being the distraction, and really at this point Wil doesn’t mind being so close to the dangerous humans because they dont even register as a threat to him. Techno always sinks their ships so quickly. As a result Wilbur looks upon humans the same way a pirate looks upon a treasure chest. “Ooooh thats got to have shinies” - Wil, seeing another small ship sail into their part of the sea
This makes me think of my ancient mermaid au I made in 202
Philza was some shiny sparkly reef mermaid and Kristin is a large, large, large dark and ancient deep-sea goddess of a mermaid and they are so <3 <3 <3
Phil swimming down down down into the dark where there is no light no food no anything and then he gets mwah kissed by his huge huge huge huge huge leviathan wife
Wilbur being half leviathan was a vague plot point. Guy is freakishly tall and long.
genuinely like makes me sick that the trauma wilbur went through in the final control room cut him so deep that even ghostbur who couldnt remember the bad, who thought well of everyone and everything, thought of eret as a bad person. it's part of why i truly dont understand why people think wilbur was Always malicious and Always just manipulating and using the people of l'manburg. like his spiral from the final control room onwards is so fucking clear and still everyone wants to paint him as someone who Just wants to hurt people for the sake of hurting people and not someone who was very recently traumatized and every second onward it just piles and piles and piles and more people keep hurting him and he's not the best person in the world, not a single character in the demp is, but he never did any of that shit for fun. a traumatic event triggered a cataclysmic spiral that he NEVER had a fucking MOMENT to try and pull himself out of. because everything kept feeding into his delusions. because "it's not paranoia if everyone is actually out to get you" to the point you cant even trust who you see in the mirror, you can't even trust who's fleeing your country hand in hand with you. man whatever WHATEVER.
EXACTLY. dude this is what I have always been saying cWilbur was JUST AS TRAUMATIZED AS EVERYBODY ELSE IN POGTOPIA. HE was betrayed in the final control room just like everyone else was. HE was exiled and chased and KILLED out of his nation. Tommy didn't loose a life on the inauguration day. Wilbur did.
HE watched as they tore down the walls HE BUILT to keep his people safe and then HE watched as Schlatt and Quackity ruined everything he worked so hard to create. He watched as Schlatt executed Tubbo and his plan was ruined before he got a chance to execute it and he realized on November 16th that what they were doing was exactly what Techno had been condemning the entire time.
He was just as traumatized as everybody else there if not more at the time and he lost EVERYTHING during the Manberg-Pogtopia war. Wilbur was not just a villain and a traitor. He was a person like everyone else there was and his descent was long coming and you can SEE it if you watch him closely in the vods from the final control room onward.
And then he got stuck in train super isolation hell for 13 years.
YEAH AND THAT DIDN'T HELP MATTERS.
I feel so. Incredibly strongly about cWilbur send help. I am SO NORMAL about cWilbur
im so normal i wrote 80k about the guy

i wish i could grab some of you and shake you and say please remember the care you've had for c!wilbur and know that your care wasn't fake or false or foolish you weren't tricked or had. that care exists because c!wilbur is a well presented and crafted character who happens to have a horrible creator. who is, regardless of his actions, good at creating. he was made for your care alongside your criticism. and analysis of c!wilbur that is just criticism with no care to view him as anything but his abusive creator frankly means nothing to me. and it should mean nothing to you. what a sad way to look upon that character.
don't you remember getting emotional to a sadness runs through him? don't you remember november 16th? don't you remember how we used to fucking run? we used to run separate from his creator. analysis through a sympathetic lens is nonexistent these days. you didn't gain a new lens of analysis through his creator being revealed to be an abusive person. it's just like classic vilbur but all the time now. vilbur but worse. nobody is saying you can't be uncomfortable with his creator. i'm not saying that. but to see what was once a character that was considered remarkably good representation for mental illness fall so far due to his creator is so sad. nothing about his character seems to really matter anymore to anyone outside a select few. and i don't really see that changing but i hate seeing posts blow up that are like, "isn't it funny that c!wilbur ended up being just as bad as cc!wilbur?" bro, in what world is that funny?
stop calling c!wilbur evil. stop saying shit like that. he touched upon an ugly side of humanity. much like the rest of the characters from the dsmp. he is not a uniquely evil character.
i know it's easier to just not care anymore. i know it's easier to simply write his whole entire character off as abusive like his creator. but damn. it make me sad. and not only is it sad but it's honestly pretty damn wrong and disrespectful to keep equating this minecraft roleplay character to a real life abuser. stupid as fuck media analysis wise, and genuinely morally wrong.
im very fond of the time I spent obsessing over cwil.... such a fucking guy. I got invested in sandduo at an insane point in my life (my father had just passed) and its just. i dont know man.
cwil is a very facinating character
bad people can make very good art
there are many cases of this and its.
man
Teaching an old friend to fly
au with techno being utterly incapable of making it through a flight with avian!Phil bc Phil flies like an absolute maniac. He will throw techno into the clouds and then catch him like ten seconds later, after he’s been freefalling while screaming at the top of his lungs. Phil thinks its funny. “Arent we having fun isnt this great” “hey Phil i love you and all but if i do not touch ground right now im going to cry”
Phil is married to death ok he literally does not blink at the concept of going ka-splat on the ground bc hey he still wins he gets to see his exasperated wife for a good minute before getting kicked back to the mortal realm so he flies with the utter confidence of something that cant be killed
that and he really really likes going fast
Phil and Techno getting caught in a Situation where they need to BOOK IT and Phil is like “i’ll fly us out here hold on” and techno holds on for dear life like “since this is a life or death matter can we refrain from spinning this time” “haha. No.”
Any time techno insists on them traveling somewhere by foot or on horse Phil just mopes and frowns and looks all weepy because what do you mean they have to move SLOW?? When they could be flying FAST AS HELL?? and ALREADY BE THERE??
Consider SMPE antarctic empire planes. I don't know how this is helpful but they did have planes. They used them when taking over the world and bombed 300 villagers in a war crime one time
I'm chasing a ghost, I don't know where he is
always funny when i see dsmp hot takes and the first sentence immediately gives it away that the anon does not understand literally the entire point of the character and/or just generally does not understand the media they have been consuming
"i only liked cwilbur as ghostbur" hey so. What! i mean it could just be my personal fixed interpretation of cWilbur's character so I could be wrong, but wasn't Ghostbur being completely different in personality from c!wil literally like. The point? Or at least Part of it? Be for serious right now???
via @transbeeduo
What............ the Point of Ghostbur was that he was a reflection of everything cwil hated and saw as weak and worthless in himself
Ghostbur was kind, ghostbur was good, ghostbur was everything Wilbur was not - ghostbur didn't make himself a villian, ghostbur is the manifestation of everything Wilbur exised from himself in his self hatred suicide. All that was left after the man ended himself was what he hated about himself. The things other people thought were good. That's. What. What.
