people love to talk about “porn being empowering” and then conflate personal sexual expression and autonomy with (power of abuse caused by oppression) and wonder why they feel degraded

“watching porn is unhealthy”
masturbation is physically recommended and porn is a form of art designed to aid in that process
however many people do develop under healthy attitudes around sex and porn can aid in that. however thats a combination of factors and not porn alone.
alternatively, we should try to keep porn as ethically sourced as possible. and treat the actors/artists with human decency and keep basic boundaries in check

bdsm was my first introduction to self autonomy and boundaries
it’s extremely important to me, its my safety and comfort, it allows me to explore things im usually unsure and afraid of:
bdsm is not just sex, its not just kinks and masturbaiting its a form of communication and expression
its a point of mutual safety and control
yk? idk
bdsm and sexual freedom also helped me alot with moral ocd and finding identity outside of my abusers. its precious to me.

the thing about consent and its importance in kink is that it is completely unrespected by the rule of law. where kink says you should be risk aware and accept those risks before play, the law often if not always says 'you are incapable of consenting to things that damage your body'. in the UK it is crime to assault someone and leave them with lasting bruising, and if you pull the 'i consented to it' defence they can prosecute you for aiding and abetting the assault!
operating in kink spaces with a consent framework is an outlaw position. it is a rule of the community, and of a community who can only respond to violations with exile - to say 'you have ignored the consent of your play partners and are unsafe to play with, and it is not safe for others if you remain.' because such investigations are largely carried out unprofessionally and carry a lot of interpersonal weight, such exiles are often messy and fracturing for the community. such violations can't be escalated to the police because the police may well prosecute everyone involved.
the interpersonal angle cannot be understated. sometimes all it takes is having a disagreement with someone over something unrelated to kink and whisper campaigns begin speaking to unsafe play practices and illegal activities. sometimes all it takes is having the 'wrong' kink or belonging to the 'wrong' minority to end up on the fringes and ostracised by the community.
this is also a part of the risk of consent and a need for trust between partners, not only to trust that the consent given in the moment was true, but also that they're not of a character to attempt to retroactively withdraw consent down the line. most kinks are illegal one way or another, and so, you should be really fucking careful who you give your consent to. this is a part of what it means to be risk aware: not just aware of the risks of the play you're engaging in, but also aware of the risks involved in *who* you're playing with.
“people don’t like it when they don’t get their treats” and “people don’t like it when their standard of living decreases” are both the exact same idea but one phrases it sympathetically and the other phrases it unsympathetically. This is known as rhetoric.
i think the reason "fiction affects reality" trips so many people up is because they think it means "engaging with media that depicts uncomfortable subjects will taint your soul" when really all it means is that "fiction is meant to reflect certain ideas of the world intentionally or not, and it's going affect your perception of it, if you don't go in with a healthy bit of skepticism"
like I think it is good and important to be able to criticise porn and erotica for the relationship to the political environment/context of creation etc, but I think that’s not too different from criticising any other art on these grounds. how is the erotica speaking to conventions of the genre? what is the author trying to tell you in what they hold up as attractive? what might the author be saying that they’re not necessarily aware that they’re saying? how does the narrative relate to other dominant cultural narratives? these are all valuable questions to ask and can be answered in nuanced ways that do not involve kink-shaming & do not involve calling people degenerate perverts. yknow.
ultimately the truth about frankenstein is that we are all grotesque amalgamations of the best and worst parts of everyone who came before us. and sometimes the people who are supposed to love us because of and in spite of this will not. and we can kill them with hammers for that. and i think that’s beautiful
my brother in christ frankenstein is the title of the book
COUNTERPOINT
well i can’t argue with that one
Ah yes, Mary Shelley’s monster.
no mary shelley is the name of the monster not the doctor
common misconception! mary shelley's monster was actually lord byron
Queer culture includes erotic content!
also, critically, minor disagreements about What Sucks among your friends and people you respect, on things with zero stakes, give you a good space to build a tolerance to that kind of thing. like yeah, mate has fucking horrendous taste in detective fiction to the point where I'd never touch any of it that he recommends, but I respect his opinion on gothic horror maybe than anyone else alive. so we just don't talk to each other about the former when we get a sense that it wouldn't be productive and it's fine
woof woof boof :333 im a goooooddd puppy puppy good woof boof
Did I ever talk abt the time i was at a bdsm club and one of the pups was on all fours and barking and being cute and the dom on scene was like “hi puppy! Do you do any tricks?” And he said “I can beatbox!”
I was like. Doubled over incapacitated laughing the entire time. He was really good and a big sweetheart and I felt kinda bad but I couldn’t stop thinking “why the am I getting the beatboxing puppy unskippable cutscene at the bdsm club”
you ever see someone so coked-up on adulthood that they've replaced every shred of interiority with a regurgitation of normative power structures
every dream, every shred of empathy, every unique desire, all rotted away and replaced by what is needed for power and control. Someone who will, no matter how well you get to know them, never show anything beyond goldfish level thoughts behind those eyes, because there is nothing left. there is a history, there. you can learn what used to be, but for the rest of their life they will never seek anything beyond the most bog-standard socially-normative popularly-affirmed idle pleasures between working, eating, and rest. the death of childhood is the death of a human being.
you can't fix someone when they get like this, either. you try and break them out of their shell and they just give you this sad, hollow, patronizing look. a look that says "you haven't grown up yet, haven't you? you haven't finished becoming a real human being, like me." I think it's a fate worse than death, to be like that.
it's not about "NPCs"!!!! it's about adults who, in seeking to distance themselves from children and the youth, whom they wish to wield violent superiority over (as encouraged by the society which regards children as non-sentient legal property of the family), crush their own non-normative aspirations that might be seen as immature!!!!! it's about people who are so attached to the power and stability of Being Mature that there isn't room for anything else!!!!! Stop misinterpreting my post!!!!! Hits everyone in the notes who's interpreting me wrong!!!!!
