not to mention all the people on pitt threads and pittblr who are like "he's an asshole, he's not autistic." y'all realize two things can be true at once right? like he can be an arrogant, priveleged white man and also an autistic man who clearly struggles with social interactions. there can be nuance and there is nuance.
also just because mel is the canon autistic character doesn't mean the pitt writers can't have other neurodivergent characters (you could probably make an argument that everyone on the pitt is neurodivergent). and he's not "bad autism representation." there are a lot of people (myself included) who see themselves in him. and frankly a lot of you are showing your ableism. you prop up mel and her autistic traits while also infantilizing the shit out of her. she's not some "soft uwu baby." she's complex and extremely competent (and she absolutely has the wherewithal to be in a relationship with langdon but I digress). and just because she's better at expressing empathy than ogilvie doesn't mean he can't be autistic (there's a reason why it's called the autism SPECTRUM). this is not a problem i have with her. the pitt writers did a great job with her character. the pitt writers have also done a great job with ogilvie's character. he's not that much different from santos last season or even javadi (something the show does acknowledge a lot). he does have flaws (as do all the characters). he's brash, cocky, emotionally detached, and a knowitall, but he's not malicious like all of y'all seem to want him to be. at times reading posts it feels like we're not even watching the same show. idk where y'all got that he's misogynistic or sadistic or that he would purposefully spew medical inaccuracies on reddit (yes, that's a real post. no, it's not in character at all ). and you can tell he's not as malicious as y'all want him to be because of the way he reacts when he's directly confronted with something that challenges his perceptions. he's visibly shaken when he was listening to robby's monologue about louie (honestly the fact that he showed up at all when it was optional and he didn't know the guy like the rest of the staff did speaks volumes that y'all don't want to hear) and he does stop with the weight comments after mckay tells him directly to stop. and like i don't really think that his explanations of his reasons why he made those comments was him backtracking or like weaponized incompetence. like it does seem like he genuinely wanted to help but didn't realize that it was an inappropriate time, place, and phrasing (which, dare i say, is quite autistic of him). and before you misconstrue what i'm saying, i'm not trying to excuse the things that he said that were shitty (the "he croaked" line, the "i wonder why" line about howard, or the talking over specifically joy). there should be accountability taken. my point is that there is room for nuance.
