When I was a kid watching tv was idiot coded and nerds read books, but now scrolling shortform videos is considered braindead behavior and watching tv means you're some kinda intellectual. You might think this shifting assessment of media's consumers might make readers into absolute super geniuses, but no. Only perverts read now.

in general i try really hard not to be pushing 30 and still harping on about being a Former Gifted Kid (TM) but one thing about that experience that REALLY pissed me off was how during independent reading time, teachers wouldn't let me read certain books that were really popular among my classmates because they were "below my level." like. i already read well above my grade level at the time and regularly read for fun at home, but had approximately one social skill. perhaps it would have been beneficial to let me read something i could actually have talked to my peers about instead of making me read higher level books that absolutely none of my classmates had read. i don't think it would have sucked the literacy out of me is all i'm saying.

#gay and obscure nonsense #idk i think being a child and being in the american education system both suck in many ways regardless of gifted vs normie status #the whole 'gifted' thing changes what flavor of suck you get but in either case #we all get treated like machines that create standardized test scores to acquire funding rather than like humans that need to develop

one of the funniest controversies to ever occur on this blog was when I made a post about a really expensive and really good yogurt I accidentally got hooked on and how it sucked to really like an expensive product you got on super sale and people accused me of posting an undisclosed ad because I spoke so highly of this yogurt I couldn’t afford to buy on the reg 😭

I feel like simply calling JK Rowling a transphobe isn't strong enough anymore. Like. This is not your grandpa calling you by your deadname at a restaurant kind of transphobic. This is her wanting to eradicate all trans people (with an extra special hatred towards trans women specifically). This is her trying just that by personally funding transphobic hate groups with millions to push around laws in the UK. It is not hyperbolic to call her a dangerous, genocidal maniac.

It's not about cancelling a problematic writer. It's about literally trying to save lives by denying her as much money and power as possible.
