As somebody who watched shows like Gotham, What We Do in the Shadows, Supernatural, Walking Dead, etc where queerness was villainized, creators reeled back in repulsion at the very thought of having two male characters fall in love with each other, where queer coded relationships awkwardly became “we’re like family”, where you find out a gay romance was scrapped to not upset male viewers, where the token gay character often dies and is never allowed to be happy.
It is genuinely just so so fucking incredible to me in ways I can’t really describe to watch The Righteous Gemstones where for an entire season I get to see a gay couple. A gay couple that wear matching outfits and call each other sweetheart and darling, that hold hands and cuddle in bed and are so gentle and in love with each other.
While so many showrunners over the years acted like gay representation was perverse and inherently sexual all people like me really wanted was for there to be gay couples allowed the same writing and portrayals as straight couples.
I know there are plenty of people who find Keefe and Kelvin cringe or don’t think much of this but as a 32 year old who has watched countless shows with queer baiting or bury your gays it is so fucking beautiful to finally have a show that is literally giving me what I wanted to see without it seeming like a punishment on the showrunners.
So I will always admire and appreciate this show for just this alone.
