aymeric has got to be the funniest character ever. notable pretty boy. serious and stern in appearance. has clawed and scraped his way up ishgardian society to gain the power needed to enact reform. has immense political connections. an expert in diplomacy and manners. attends formal events on the regular since it is required of him. a skilled dancer who is the talk of noble women. is voted in as lord speaker and is in charge of the temple knights. is by all means the ultimate catch who could have anyone he wants.
and yet! he does not like doing Any of this!!! he is still single in his 30s. he wants to quit his job and see the world, but won’t because he feels morally obligated to stay. despite having his pick of anyone in ishgard, he becomes enamored with the adventurer who not only arrives in ishgard as a fugitive, but immediately gets in trouble with the heaven’s ward and crashes into ishgard on the back of a dragon more than once.
he is the cause of awkward silence at alliance meetings on more than one occasion and fumbles around when asking wol to dinner and can’t keep his emotions in check around them.
his adoptive parents (who were by all accounts a nice elderly couple) have passed on and the only family he has left is his birth father who mocks him for his idealism and does not love him; he is visibly ruffled when this is used against him in a debate. he loves sweets and gets excited about the starlight celebration and volunteers to hand out gifts to children. he has a dodo omelette recipe he uses to convince lucia, the literal garlean spy he spared, about the joys of cooking. this does not work.
he walks around on guard duty in a neon blue elephant suit for reasons we can only speculate about. what the fuck is wrong with this guy (affectionate).
"all you ever do is complain" that's not true. I also resent.
and love..........

*takes the hand of a period drama writer gently* A queen consort is not a queen regnant. A dowager queen is not a queen regnant either.
There is very little intrinsic institutional power in queenship. The power a consort, dowager, or queen mother has depends mostly on how much the reigning sovereign (usually a man) is willing to grant her. Needing a queen to serve as regent is exceptionally rare, and the regent is more often a male relative.
I know this is a bit of a bummer. I'm sorry.
For clarity:
Queen regnant: woman who rules in her own right, not on behalf of someone else.
Regent: Someone who temporarily assumes the powers of the monarch on account of the monarch being too young or too incapacitated to govern.
Queen consort: Woman who is married to the monarch.
Dowager queen: Woman who was married to the monarch. The monarch is dead, and she is owed support as his widow.
Queen mother: Woman who is the mother of the monarch. Usually the dowager queen, though there are exceptions if there isn't a straight line of succession.
We need more women characters who are Male Protagonists. You know. Slightly haggard. She's splashing cold water on her face and gripping the edge of the sink staring in the mirror for a minute. She's coping badly with her deadwife
Ok listen I get that people tagging posts with men is a rule of physics on this hellsite but it's kind of bizarre how badly some of you have failed the assignment on this one. A generic male protagonist archetype who is a man is nothing. That's just the normal cliche I'm talking about subverting. What?
Like if you are For Serious headcanoning your blorbo as a trans woman I am kissing you on the head. But I KNOW most of you are not doing that. Come on. For one dollar name a fictional woman. No being a loser does not make him a woman try again
The post about the movies without women that should not have women in them was inspired by The Lighthouse (2019), I’m pretty sure the person who said it needed more female characters was joking. The male ego and dynamics of dominance and aggression between men is such an important theme of that film. Winslow/Thomas Howard made those terrible decisions because he was a man. Both of the characters being men was integral to the plot like Thomasin being a girl was integral to The VVitch (2015).
there are some movies where people will be like “I think it needed more female characters :/” but I think the lack of female characters makes complete sense because this is dumbass guy behavior. this is a fool’s plot that the average woman would have handled better or totally avoided. the hubris of men was a core element of the film. not that women cannot be blinded by their own hubris but there is a reason guys are more likely to die in bizarre freak ‘accidents’. I say this as a man. it’s why horror movies with a final girl make sense, a 22 year old guy would be sooooo certain he could take the slasher in combat and die badly.
in a misogynistic society, men are taught from birth that they should be able to dominate others automatically, they often develop the false impression that they are untouchable and capable of defeating any threat. women are repeatedly reminded that they can be harmed and told it is their fault if they are harmed, that makes them more likely to be risk aware and risk averse. again, I’m not saying women cannot do risky things and make boneheaded choices, I’m just saying that it makes more sense for a bunch of men to go on a failed expedition and start killing each other. because they keep doing that.
it’s why the horror trope of the wife repeatedly telling her husband there is something wrong with their new house/they are in danger and the husband totally discounting her worries makes so much sense, similar things happens in real life every day
exactly. you guys get it. perfect dichotomy.
