This is an abbreviated list. The full requirements are on the Artist Guide page.
You will produce a polished illustration tangibly inspired by the fanfiction you’re paired with.
What does tangibly inspired mean? You can choose to depict:
👉 the featured characters
👉 a specific scene from the fic
👉 a broader, more symbolic illustration, like might be used for a book cover
What route you take is up to you! You’re encouraged to talk to your writer for inspiration, but this is not a commission, so follow your imagination and inspiration.
Do I need to be a professional or experienced artist to join? What if I only like certain Dragon Age games or content?

As we look forward to another year, there’s no better time to celebrate our wonderful community of creators. This year, we’re shining a spotlight on our alumni: the talented writers and artists who successfully completed the Dragon Age Big Bang in previous years. All past DABB alumni were given the option of an interactive interview with our mod Alix, or an informal written survey. If you’re thinking about participating this year, check out the insights and advice from those who tread this path before!
On getting out of your comfort zone
Alix and Maggie talk hockey AU, Viago, and why OCs are amazing
Alix: I'm very excited for this interview, since obviously you were my artist last year and we had a lot of fun. But I don't think I ever asked you what drew you to sign up for the DABB!
Maggie: Ohh yes gosh I wonder if I can remember how I found it.
I honestly think I might have just googled Dragon Age BB XD wow I really can't remember, not like it was too long ago asdfghj
Alix: That's so funny
Maggie: I did a big bang for a different fandom a few times many years ago with one of my best IRL friends, and last year I made a point to put myself out there online more, apply for zines and other projects.
Alix: What was your reaction when you found out we were matched? I remember I immediately went and looked up your tumblr and I was so excited.
Maggie: I was so excited and so nervous LOL I was so looking forward to your AU, I’ve always loved a good modern type of AU! I find it so fun and interesting to think about characters in a setting so different from their canon. Like thinking about how they would fit into a hockey league! Or what they would do as a job, how their stories would fit into a modern world, etc. I also reeeally love OC's, because OC's tend to be so important and loved by their creators. I love talking about other people's OCs with them, and hearing how excited they are makes me really happy hehe.
Definitely nervous bc I was like, "Ok time to meet a new person, don’t come off too strong..." xD
Alix: I was so nervous that nobody would be interested in a hockey AU, and then you were so excited.
Every year people think, "Oh nobody is going to want to illustrate my fic," and every year everyone ends up matched.
Maggie: Thats how i feel about mine rn omg
I try to remind myself there will always be someone out there who loves what you love too.
Alix: It's true!
It's been a fun change that this year we get to write together after meeting as writer/artist last year.
Maggie: Hehe yes i agree!! I hope I can also be an artist but I'm not gonna push myself.
Alix: What was your favourite thing about doing DABB as an artist last year?
Maggie: Definitely the community. I've met so many amazing people, it’s always been something I loved about creativity. It draws (pun intended) people together. And while i do have some friends irl that also like Dragon Age, it's nice having so many online friends to share that love with!! Especially since Dragon Age is so special to me. And it lends itself to some truly amazing OCs, which is one of the best parts of DA.
I also loved having a space to go to for encouragement or advice, or be able to offer my own thoughts or perspective to others!
Alix: Obviously our writer sign-ups are closed, but what advice would you have for an artist considering signing up for this year?
Maggie: Even if you’re nervous, just put yourself out there. Pop into conversations on the discord, comment on posts, get to know the community! It's been the best way to keep myself motivated. I struggle with a lot of health problems and that can very easily make me not want to do art at all. So many people have encouraged me, telling me to both take care of myself and reminding me that they love my art and that they’re excited for whatever I can create, even if its not always up to my own huge standards.
Also, MARK DOWN DEADLINES in multiple places XD
I have them in my personal calendar as well as on a big sticky note on my desktop.
Alix: Amazing.
Maggie: If I can fit in one more comment related to that, I'd also advise people to not be afraid to go out of their comfort zone.
I knew nothing about hockey but knew I loved OCs and was so so interested in your concept, I had to put my name in for that fic hehe.

Maggie: At that time I barely knew how much I’d fall in love for Viago XD
Alix: heheheheh converting people to my Viago agenda always.
Maggie: There was a clap of thunder right as you sent that message..........

You're gonna make stuff again. You're gonna make stuff you're proud of. You're gonna make stuff you're excited to share. You're going to feel that overwhelming drive to create, not just the frantic I want to want to you're stuck in now. You're going to have awesome ideas, and you're going to make them into reality. You're going to create again. You're still an artist. You're still a writer. You're still home to the same passion you had before. You'll find it again. It's not gone. It's just resting. Let it rest. You're going to make stuff again. I promise.
every single social interaction i’ve ever had feels like wearing a giant flashing neon sign that says “I DON’T BELONG” in all caps and everyone around me can see it
it's just that i'm always worried i'm doing the wrong thing even when there's not a wrong thing to be doing. in the grocery aisle i'm doing the wrong thing. stopping for a moment to retie my shoelaces i am doing the wrong thing.
it is the first time i've visited this friend at her house; i'm doing the wrong thing already, what if i have the wrong address, what if she has special rules i don't know about, what if my presence here was more of a politeness and not a true request. it is the first time i've been to this restaurant, and surely yes i've been to many of these but what if i'm doing the wrong thing in this one. and even if i've been to this gym a million times what if this time the rules have changed somehow (or i've been doing it wrong all along and it was pure luck that nobody noticed) and what if this time i'm doing it very wrong.
they're taking orders for lunch at work, what if i order the wrong thing somehow, or what if - what if i am not even supposed to order anything - is this a test? my friends ask if i want to see a movie but what if i suggest a movie that they won't like and that's certainly doing the wrong thing. yes im certifiably happy and she's amazing and i love being a lesbian but if i bring her on a date where everything isn't blisteringly perfect (the weather is a bit chilly, finding parking was harder than i thought, the event started 3 minutes late) isn't that doing the wrong thing? i know i can't control everything obviously but i should have planned better; this was my fault. and of course i know i'm only human but - a lack of omnipotent foresight really is doing the wrong thing now.
am i doing the wrong thing writing about this? i'm doing the wrong thing, aren't i, i'm so sorry, i always seem to be doing that somehow.
