Mama holds out a plate of fried mandrakes and pot pie for the young witch, "Ah thought you could use a bit of somethin' ta eat. Please help yourself if you like."
Well, this was a sudden offer. Ashley just blinked a couple of times at her and looked to the plate, before taking the plate and beginning to munch on a mandrake.
ââŠThanks.â
Ashley had actually just started to come around the corner, one cent between her fingers, when she overheard the duo opening their hearts to Rosalina. She backed up and kept listening, staring at the ground...this wasnât her story to listen to, really...but she couldnât help it. It resonated with her, in a way.
Her own parents had supposedly tried to raise her on their own, but apparently it was too difficult. She understood why they may notâve been able to have her in a normal house like theirs...but why did they have to live so far away? Why did they write so rarely? Why did every one of those letters end with âLoveâ? Those sure werenât the signals she was getting. Itâd be easier for all of them if they just didnât lie.
Of course, standing there, thinking about all the terrible, disgusting things she heard about their father...she started to think maybe she was lucky her parents left her alone. That sort of attention was so much worse than anything she went through.
Pocketing the coin, the young witch turned to head back to her room. Maybe she could see Rosalina later...or see them later...
â...Oh, did something important happen lately? I didnât notice.â
â...Merry Christmas.â

â Quite cute for a witch, arenât you? Can you show    me how scary you can be for Halloween, though? â
Cute...it was a word Ashley hated having attributed to her. In this case, however, she felt she could give it a pass. She was staying in a town full of monsters and being addressed by one of the most fearsome and respect of all of them- it was less an insult and more...cultural differences? Maybe? Whatever- this would be her chance to show otherwise. Halloween wasnât for cuteness, after all; it was for scariness!
And scary, she was told, she could do very well.
As if the light around them had suddenly shifted, a sharp shadow was cast over the young witchâs face. Dark magic began to manifest and swirl outward from her position, and the red hue of her eyes went from an unusual coloration to an otherworldly glow, peeking out from the shadows. Her raven hair changed as well, shifting to white in another telltale sign of her magical display. Surely any being who could fear would feel her ominous, oppressive presence, the air around them growing heavier and drawing even further terror from her appearance.
And then all shifted back to normal in a second. She looked back up to the lanky skeleton with those big red eyes, no longer glowing.
â...I havenât done that on command before. Was it alright?â
Headcanon:
Ashleyâs birthday is October 30th. Yep, the day before Halloween. She has long preferred not to celebrate her birthday, as it would require having a party with other people and she just finds the day after to be much more significant. But as sheâs started to open up and accept the others as her friends, itâs turned out to be inevitable that they would want to celebrate her birthday too. She has begrudgingly come to accept this from them, though inside sheâs actually become quite happy about it, especially when Penny is involved.
Ashley and Red werenât at all unfamiliar with traveling to different worlds. The Demon Realms, the Paranormal Trade and Merchant Square, that disgustingly sweet Ice Cream Land...dimensional travel was something the pair was fairly familiar with, certainly among Diamond Cityâs residents. Even so, the arrival in Halloweentown felt particularly dizzying. The hard impact of her feet against the ground made Ashley stumble a bit, and Red was unlucky enough to hit the dirt and roll a couple feet.
âMmmrrrph...â Red pulled his face up, spitting out a bit of the ground heâd accidentally chewed up. A quick couple shakes of his head and he was able to get up to the ground, surveying the scenery as Ashley was. Skewed, stony architecture, a full moon shining through the clouds in a pitch black sky...this was the place alright. A foreign land that was so familiar, the very site from which the only holiday Ashley had celebrated for so long originated.
âTh-they sure go all in on the aesthetics here, huh?â Red commented before his head turned to the ground. A quick look down to his hands and body...exactly the same as before.  âHuh, go figure. I guess Iâm already a kinda Halloween creature. Pretty weird how this place works, huh Ash-â
The imp suddenly jumped back in the air, catching himself with a quick flap of his wings to remain aloft. âA-Ashley! Youâre...youâre...!â
It was the rules of the invitation. All who would accept would arrive and be changed, transfigured into a form befitting a native resident of Halloweentown- the only way to really be accepted and guaranteed safety. And as Red looked upon Ashley, whose eyes were on her own form, he would find that his best friend...
Was also exactly as she had been when they had departed.
âYouâre fine!â he finished, flapping on over to her with a smile.  âI dunno whether itâs the magic of this place or something else that changed everyone else, but it must think you didnât need to be changed! You fit right in here!â
Even as he spoke, Ashley parsed what he was saying. She was human... plenty of other humans had turned up here and been transformed, by the looks of it. But she wasnât simply human, was she? She was a witch. A witch who loved Halloween. A witch who had been prepared to travel to the home town of her favorite holiday and become like one of the locals. A witch who had just been told that she was already witchy enough to fit right into Halloweentown, exactly as she did in Diamond City.
And as this thought came to her mind, so, too, did a smile spread across her face.
âCool.â
â...Thinking about that movie from last night. I feel like one of the messages was 'your parents may be boring and neglectful, but at least they wonât try to sew buttons into your eyes.â
...Good movie, but kind of a low bar to set.â
