Everyday Witchuals: coffee edition

What makes witchcraft so magical is stirring intent and your spirit into every mundane part of your life. Here are some of my favorite coffee-inspired rituals!

The basics of intent: stirring!

Deosil (clockwise): increases or encourages whatever meditated or chanted

Widdershins (counter-clockwise): decreases or blocks whatever is meditated or chanted

Additions and complexity: flavors!

Cinnamon: element of fire, adding action and initiative.

Vanilla: element of air, adding mental prowess and clarity of thought.

Hazelnut: element of earth, adding grounding and valuation of material product or work

Peppermint: element of water, adding clear emotions and revealing true intentions

Witchcraft makes anything everything magical. Consider the environment where you enjoy a cup of coffee: is it work? Is it home? Is it outside in nature? Taking the moment given to you to soak in your surroundings and bless your place of being is so powerful, especially as one knowing of their power.

What books can you recommend to someone who wants to start her walk down the crooked path? I recently bought the devil’s dozen and paul huson’s mastering witchcraft based on recommendations, but I was wondering what else I should acquire as there are sooo many that are filled with misinformation. Thank you!

There are so many good books and it depends a lot on what you want your craft to focus on. Here are some general recommendations.

I think Gemma Gary’s books are great for beginners. “Traditional Witchcraft” and “The Black Toad” are both very hands-on books that cut to the heart of Trad Craft. Nigel Pearson is another reliable author. His book “Treading the Mill” is, I think, the best, most accessible introduction to Traditional Witchcraft. “Mastering Witchcraft” by Paul Huson is my favorite. Don’t just randomly call on Vassago, though. That part drives me nuts. Michael Howard is a great author. He has a series of books on regional British witchcraft practices I have really been enjoying lately.

If you want to read some more technical books, I would recommend the books of Emma Wilby. They’re quite complex and historical. Carlo Ginzburg’s “The Night Battles” is similar. Wilby stands on the shoulders of Ginzburg.

I would also recommend “Aradia: Gospel of the Witches” by Charles Godfrey Leland and Alexander Carmichael’s “Carmina Gadelica”. They’re older books and are very influential.

I would think about getting some herbal books, too. That’s just my preference. Everyone loves to complain about how light and fluffy he is, but Scott Cunningham’s “Complete Book of Incense, Oils, and Brews” can really show you how to do things like make your own ointments and incense. Take his sermonizing about curses and poisonous plants with a grain of salt. I personally adore Grieves’ Herbal. It’s a bit older, but is such a good read full of history and superstition.

I would also really, truly, deeply consider researching the witchcraft practices of your own location, wherever it may be. Look into the traditional magical practices of your locale and if you can’t find any, look for superstitions, fairy tales, folk songs. There’s magic to be found everywhere. Traditional Witchcraft is about working with the spirit of the land and becoming very acquainted with your land should be part of the process. On that note, you may want to pick up some field guides to your local plants and animals.

Definitely take Cunningham’s sermonizing about harm none with a serious grain of salt. There are several accounts of how Llewellyn wouldn’t publish him back then if he didn’t tidy it up and play a good Wiccan as an author. Apparently his Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs contained nearly as much hexing and cursing in its first draft as it does about love and money.

Yeah, Harm none witchc aft was the thing of the day because people were still afraid of public backlash. In the states this was around the time of the Satanic Panic and coming out of the communism phobia. You know the era that brought Raegan and the phrase ‘a return to good Christian values’ to American culture. Printing stuff about curses openly, even as a scholarly work, was likely to set off protests, book burnings, litigation and Gods know what else…

Llewellyn was deathly afraid of being run into bankruptcy or shut down by a court order of indecency and inciting violence.

This this this! So few people understand that the image of the fluff-bunny sweetness and light Wicca was a direct response to and rejection of the very real satanic panic of the 1980s. People’s lives were actually ruined because of it, people were actually sent to jail because crazy people accused them of flushing live kindergarteners down toilets into secret underground rooms, electrocuting elephants, and bringing the dead back to life.

It seems hilarious today but this was an actual thing. In light of it I can absolutely understand why the witches of the time spent all that time stating loudly and clearly that they had nothing to do with satanism, cursing, or anything remotely ‘scary’.

Witchy guide to cleaning your room

✨ Put on some meditative music like nature sounds to get you in the cleaning mood and cleanse the energy of your room. I recommend https://mynoise.net/ 

✨ Open up the curtains and window! Sunlight and fresh air will make your room feel better in a hurry.

✨ Put out a bowl of salt (any kind will do) to cleanse anything bad out of the air. Throw it out the next day.

✨ Get rid of clutter as this will stifle all energy and make you feel sluggish.

✨ Use all-natural cleaners to give things a good wipe down. If you have a hardwood floor you can mop with hot water and vinegar. If you have carpet (and it smells) try sprinkling some baking soda and then vacuuming it up after a while.

✨ Throw your bedding in the wash and make your bed once it’s dry. 

✨ The same goes for any laundry you have lying around. Wash and put away! Everything will smell better.

✨ Clean up your altar space if you have one and leave out fresh offerings to any deities you worship.

✨ Add the final touches of moving things back where they should be and rearranging decorations. Get ready to charge your crystals for the next full moon.

Now you should feel brand new!
