During my time in Massachusetts I’ve been going to my family’s church, and I’ve generally enjoyed it. But this morning, at Sunday Service, it dawned on me that every Sunday a different person leads the congregation in scripture reading and prayer before the sermon, but it’s always a man. And it brought me back to when my mom and two men from our church were studying to become ministers, but my mom was only allowed to practice preaching on Sunday nights because the main Sunday morning service was reserved for the two men that were studying to practice their sermons. I remember sitting in church on Sunday nights watching my mom preach her heart out to all of 10 people who would show up to night services and that fills me with tearful rage because who decided that women’s voices are less important in the church? NOT JESUS.

But the beautiful thing is that my mom never became a pastor, but she continued to preach on Sunday nights, and stand up to men in church board meetings and take broken people into our home and fight for justice and she has never given up on spreading the compassionate message of Jesus and her voice has accomplished a lot for God despite the lack of a Sunday Morning platform.

So I live in Scotland, a country with free universal healthcare, and this post made me curious about how much that actually costs us. Turns out, roughly 4% of our income tax goes to the National Health Service. For me that’s £10 a month. The equivalent of $13. I have spent more than that on a pizza.
