Amusement bubbles, and Harry cants his head to the side slightly to accommodate it, uncertain as to why it strikes him as such a smile-worthy thing. There it is, though, and here he is, never having hugged a sheep in his life, and not having intended to until this very moment. He’s all for new experiences, after all. All for them. Ren will probably have a field day with the entire endeavor.
“May I ask why? Not that I’m unwilling to take your word for it — just curious.”
“It's a breathing sweater. Have you ever felt someone's heart beat through their sweater? It's like that, except better. Like lying in the warm grass when the wind blows. Holding onto a living, breathing creature. Just loving it. No complications. Hug a sheep. I lied about the once in your life. You should make it an annual endeavor.”
It rolls of his tongue with such casual ease that he doesn't really think about what's he's said. How it sounds. Jeremy isn't even necessarily one to be one with the wild, aside from his tendency to get lost, so much as he enjoys soft creatures willing to let him snuggle with them. Finally, the lighter makes it to the end of his cigarette.
Connecticut — well then. Either Harry’s a long ways from home, or he is, and it’s sort of thrillingly scary to consider which one of those might be the truth of the matter. He can’t put it past himself, he imagines — not really — but neither does he know the other male’s tendency to drift ; supposes he can always learn, if he feels the need to. Clean hands pull from the cold water, and he dries them off on his trousers, straightening from his crouch to angle his body in favor of looking at him a bit more clearly.
“My dog picks fights with cows. Sheep, too. Lots of sheep. It never really works out all that well for him, actually.”
He bares no mind to the sudden pair of eyes, nor the brilliance of them and instead nods his agreement. Jeremy figures it suits him just the same. He spent the better half of his childhood fighting with cows and sheep, himself ; spent the better half of his teenage years in the weeds with the curs. It's an oddity to say the least — how much it relates to this stranger's dog. Though, he doubts the animal is as much a mongrel as he is.
“Mm, fight or not... you should hug a sheep at least once in your life.”
Colours mingle together over the rocks, a cloud of vibrant thought drifting downstream with every pass of Harry’s hands through the water ; he kneels on the shore, bare feet in the dirt, and considers his final few weeks before he retreats into the city again — disappears in a crowd rather than in the countryside. It’s getting cold out, after all. Almost too cold for skin and paint.
“Where are you from?” He asks suddenly, passing a glance over his shoulder.
Lost. Undoubtedly, most assuredly, absolutely, blind lost. And it's his favourite thing in the entire world short of being able to sleep for a solid four hours with- out dawn responsibilities and the agony of dreaming. An unlit cigarette clings to the space between two fingers ; his light hovers in the perhaps when his attention is stolen from the aimless nothingness of his thoughts.
“Connecticut,” Jeremy gives up easily. “Small town, lotta cows.” His family owns most of 'em.
Beckett shuts off the car and drops his keys into his pocket and lets out a groan, as he gets out of the car. Of course. With the amount of money he’s spent fixing this car he might as well have gotten a new one already. He runs a hand through his hair, instantly regretting it when he remembers how much grease and oil were on his hands. With a glance at the watch on his wrist he inwardly falls to the ground; of course he has another class he has to get to. “Should’ve just bought one before.”
Jeremy's already tapped a cigarette out of his pack and placed it firmly between his teeth ; raises his lighter to torch the end before speaking around his exhale. “You didn't even know what a terminal was before, bro.” Trusty white Bic back in his pocket, he leans against the car, flicking ash lazily to the side of him. “I can pick one up for you later, if you want. There's a place in town that still gives me the employee discount.”
He swears to God that if the car starts he’s going to punch Jeremy in the face. Regardless he turns to start the car and of course as soon as he turns the key the car starts up. “Fucking asshole.”It’s times like this where he wishes his Dad had taught him how to fix cars instead of keeping a straight face when you lie.
A smile blooms easily across his face despite the vulgar language throw in his general direction. “That should hold you over until you can purchase a new one. Relatively cheap, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.” Jeremy says, closing the hood and smoothing his palms over on his jeans.
”Dude I spent four years in High School playing football, and as soon as I left I went to school for law. I worked in my Dad’s law firm. What the fuck is a terminal.” All he knows is basics, it’s not like his Dad ever took the time to show him what’s going on with cars. His moto was always to hand over his credit card and get it fixed by someone else. “Check it.”
There's no particular need to be snippy, but Jeremy takes it in stride regardless ; gives a slight roll of the eyes, clearing his throat quietly to cover the small scoff of laughter. Practiced hands reach for the battery terminals, fiddling a little to test if either of them are loose ; tightens the left one slightly and nods toward the driver's side. “Start her up. See if that did the trick.”
"I’ve looked over this car a hundred times and I can’t find one single thing wrong with this piece of shit.” Go figure his parents can pay his tuition and his rent but they refused to buy him a working car. Go fucking figure.
“Did you check to see if one of your terminals was loose?” He's spent his fair share of time around cars, considering he worked as a mechanic for three years in high school. Not necessary a professional, but he knows a thing or two. Or four.
