starscream is more trans than the actual trans characters in idw and I am not joking. I am not being facetious or ironic. I mean that.

bots in the idw 2k5 canon can be born in one of two ways. the first is a natural birth, called being forged, where a spark emerges from cybertron's core and implants itself in a pool of liquid metal that slowly forms a body around it. the other is to be "cold constructed", in which a spark is implanted in a pre-built, usually mass-produced body.

starscream, in idw 2k5, is the latter. and it's explicit canon that he's never, not once in his entire existence, felt comfortable in the body that was assigned to him. it's also explicit canon that throughout his life he has repeatedly sought extreme body modifications, including full body replacements, to alleviate this discomfort. even on the page, visible to the reader, we see him go through more redesigns than any other character.

and then one day he's given a glimpse. just a glimpse. of what he would have been, had he been forged. had his spark been given the chance to build a body of its own. and it haunts him.

and even then, after he knows what he should have been, the body he should have had, he never tries to build it for himself. because he doesn't think he deserves it. it's too good for him. he can never be that beautiful, that sleek, that elegant. that's beyond him. no constructed frame could ever hope to recreate the perfection of what he could have been, if he'd had the right body from birth. so he stays in the body that makes him miserable. because if he can't have perfection, he doesn't deserve anything at all.
