She stopped chewing at the what the girl said “Do you…do you think we’ll ever get that? A claim?” She asked, looking at her. It was something that she had thought over the years but the hope of it faded more and more with time. She couldn’t help but snort at that, shaking her head “Let’s find one of dragons and tell them that”

Thalia got a thoughtful expression at the question. Truth be told, she had more hopes for her friends than herself. She had been claimed once already, and then dumped back, the chances of her being picked again were slim. But for someone like Selene, there was plenty of hope to be had. “Yeah, I think your chances are great. If you happen to like someone back, you shouldn’t be shy about trying to push it in that direction. Though it does require you letting someone a bit close. As for me, I’m not very hopeful, past claim and all.” She shrugged a bit. Thalia grinned. “oh hell yes, they’d totally see the humor in it.”

“Oh,” Vered’s smile faltered a bit. “I’m sorry.” He apologized softly–afraid his social faux pas had brought up an unpleasant topic. He hadn’t realized that there were certain dynamics even within the different species regarding their own kind being traitors. It made sense though in some ways–although Vered could hardly even begin to imagine betraying his kind. But then again, what had her offense been to land her in such a place? Vered tried not to think about it and continued to follow her quietly. 

The last thing he wanted was to invite conflict into what was an already overwhelming day. “We could go to the Riverlands if that if safer for you,” he agreed. “I can visit the Woodlands a different day when I’m on my own”

Thalia shook her head at him. “Don’t be. You couldn’t have known.” she said with a small shrug. It was the dark side of the spectrum that newcomers hardly considered unless they were well immersed in how the city worked. She usually oped not to divulge or make a big deal of it, but she couldn’t risk a walk trough her own species territory, even with a visitor. It would be highly unwise and would at best result in a beating or some punishment from one of the superiors of the wolves. There were no species she knew that was as hard on their own kind as wolf kind. 

“The Riverlands or any other territory I’m happy to give you a tour of. Though I suspect you know your way around your own maybe?” she asked with a small smile. “But yeah, any other territory would be safer.”

Thalia disliked being rented out as much as anyone, though it was a while since she’d been sent out for a house call. That was what most of the slaves and traitors called it when they were summoned to someone’s home by one of the guards, told to walk straight there or else.. There was always an ‘or else..’ though. It simply came with being owned by the city. They had license to do whatever they liked, whenever they liked. Truth be told, Thalia was having one of those days where she was well past caring. When you spent long enough here, everything blurred together. Today, she didn’t have the energy to be bitter or sad or mad about having to do anyone’s bidding. Coming to a stop at what she hoped was the right address, she knocked on the door, waiting patiently.

Thalia didn’t spend too much time in the city centre on account of how it often got her either rented or in some kind of trouble. She had spent a lot of time claimed, which had left her more at ease, less guarded and with a sharper toungue than most found acceptable. However, she’d been feeling a little cooped up lately so she was out and about. Strolling down main, she stopped in front of the bakery, admiring their display. She loved cakes, but it had been a while since she’d gotten to taste one. Noticing a guy coming up the street, she turned, leaning against the display window. “You’re not in the mood for cake by any chance?” she asked, giving him a wry smile.

Maeve thought for a moment, looking at the paperwork. She was a lawyer after all. The idea of signing something that she hadn’t looked over all but put her in a state. She realized the other woman had asked her a question and she looked up from where she was reading. “Sorry. What kind of animal you said? I’m not entirely sure, to be honest. Just something that I connect with.” She was hoping she would, anyway. There was a chance she might not. But she had always been well connected to the fish and creatures in the sea. She had a feeling that would happen here, too. “I wouldn’t mind checking both. If it’s not too much trouble.” 

Thalia knew that the paperwork was often something that made customers pause. It made clear to them how real and serious this sort of purchase was, and that to her was a good thing. No one should get an animal without being aware of the responsibility or the effort it would take to care for it. And she thought her employer was wise and caring in wanting to make sure the animals they did adopt away wouldn’t be neglected or left behind for any reason. “I asked if you’re looking for a cat or a dog?” she repeated calmly, giving her a small smile, hoping to ease whatever emotion she was feeling. “Of course its not. Come on back, I’ll introduce you to some furry friends.”

Nodding at the girl’s words, agreeing she let out a bitter chuckle “But noo, we  are the ones being punished for something we didn’t even do” She rolled her eyes, where was the logic in that? Taking a swig of her water she opened the bag of chips she had managed to sneak in and offered some to the other girl “Let’s tell them that and see how it goes” She said with a teasing smile.

Thalia knew the system was in many ways rigged, or rather it was too harsh if you asked her. Her only crime had been helping a friend for a small week, feeling too torn about turning him in to do so. And this was all the work of rebels which they were forced to clean up for them.. Nothing about that felt right, and yet no superior and no part of the council really cared. In their eyes they were all deserving of endless punishment for actions they saw as betrayal against their own kind and their own race. “Yeah, we’re always going to be. Unless we find some semblance of freedom serving just one of them.” she noted, thinking of how their only hope of change lay in serving another person for the rest of their lives. “Oh yeah, we’re totally getting off the hook with that approach.” she replied with a small laugh.

Russel did always enjoy that bratty mouthy front Thalia liked to put up. They had done this dance enough, that Russel knew what to expect, and it was always a thrill. “Just stating facts. If you’re ashamed of being a slut that’s on you.” He grinned leaning in to smell her familiar scent. His hand slid lower, running down her belly to find her folds. “I know your body has missed this even if you refused to admit it yourself. Don’t worry. I’ll sate that hunger you have deep inside you. A messy slut like you can never hide for long.”

Thalia knew what to expect, and that was probably something that made her feel more at ease around Russel than any other superior. Despite the fact that it annoyed her to no end that he should have any effect on her at all. Like always she would not give up anything without a fight. “I’m only a slut to survive, and no, no shame here. But you go ahead and try to put me down.” she gave him her fakest smile, raising her chin and keeping her features expressionless despite feeling his hand between her legs. “Good luck with that.” Her defiance seeping trough every fibre of her, unwilling to let her guard down for even a second.

The being before him was yet another collared by the city. It was no longer strange or uncommon for his eyes to see–although it did still make him rather uncomfortable and sad. They were labeled as traitors, something Vered couldn’t really imagine. The hive was so loyal to their queen he didn’t think it was even possible for one of his kin to defect in such a way. Even so, he doubted Queen Calliope would be so harsh as to enslave them.

Pushing down the nervousness he felt he shook his head. “Oh, no I believe it’s the territory of the were-creatures? I wanted to drop something off to a new acquaintance.” Vered explained briefly with a soft smile. It seemed the charitable errand would have to wait for now until he knew where he was going. “But if you know the way to the Riverlands where the fae reside, that would be equally lovely, thank you.” 

Thalia was far too used to the staring to really care or notice. She suspected that some superiors to a degree sympathized, at least at times, but she also knew that most of them wouldn’t express that. They were near obligated to keep their image up to date and ig not treat the slaves bad, at least treat them with indifference. When he mentioned were creatures, her body somewhat stiffened. She had heard what she wanted to hear, instead of hearing that he was asking her to show him to her own kinds territory. Yet she didn’t want to admit that she actively worked not to go there because she knew how her own kind would react to have a traitor in their midst. “Ah, I see. Well I can walk you there, but I’m not sure I’m welcome inside the territory itself. My kind don’t take kindly to traitors.” she said, her tone a little more quiet than usual. “But then if you need a guide from there to the Riverlands again I can wait on the border and walk you back. Honestly any excuse not to sit in my cell works for me.”

Selene was a mess, helping around has made her clothes get dirty and she was sweaty and tired so to say that she was grumpy was an understatement. That’s why in an act of rebelion she went and stole two wattle bottles and a few snacks before going to sit besides Thalia, offering her one of the bottles “I’m beat, I just want to go and sleep for a decade” She said, opening hers and taking a big gulp “This is crazy, if we had our whole powers this would be quicker”

Thalia felt like if she bathed for hours, she would still not be clean. Though what bothered her more were getting all scraped up on her hands and arms carrying rocks. It didn’t leave you feeling good in any way, and she wondered if the supers even cared that they were dirtying up and damaging their own profit. What master or mistress would want a slave that was sweaty, dirty and all scraped up? Taking the bottle that was offered her, Thalia managed to send Selene a small smile, despite how tired she felt. “Same here. Honestly the stupid rebels that were captured should be the one fixing this, not us.” she said with some annoyance. “Such a good point, we would have been done long ago..”

Vered had done very little exploring on his own so far. But, aside from only a few incidents, everything seemed to be going alright. Despite his initial hesitation, he was slowly beginning to like it. Curious to see what remained to be explored, he set out again on his own after leaving a note for his roommate. 

Only after about an hour, he found himself a bit…lost. The mixture of sounds, smells, and sights had become overwhelming and he needed to get back to someplace quiet to settle his nerves. Glancing up ahead, he noticed someone lingering and decided to ask them for directions. “Hello,” he greeted shyly. “You wouldn’t happen to know how to get back to the Woodlands from here, would you? I’m a bit turned around…”

Thalia had come to a stop close to the border, to where she could see the burnt remains of the forrest that had been there. It was a terrible sight. She might not have that connection to the earth as the fae’s had, or a forrest dragon, but as a wolf she was strongly opposed to anything in nature being damaged. Because damaging nature for war or selfish intent was a crime. Which made her wonder who would do such a thing and for what a purpose? Because clearly the rebels hadn’t had a foolproof plan when they went to do so. 

Unable to stomach the sight much longer, she turned back to the city, beginning the usual window shopping she often did when she was allotted time outside the gutters. She had been lingering by a display of crazy nice cakes when someone came up to her. “Hi.” she replied with a curious smile. “Woodlands.. the new fae territory? I mean I haven’t been but I know the general direction of the species territories so I could walk you there at least? If you want me to that is.” she offered, finding that she might be able to sate her own curiosity about the fae by giving aid to one.

Her promotion had put a lot of things into perspective. One of the bigger things was the fact that she needed someone to come home to. She wasn’t about to claim someone just yet but she could do something. The idea of a dog or cat was one she could get behind. While she thought about a fish, it wasn’t the same. She decided to head down to the animal shelter to take a look around, waiting at the front desk. She had never adopted a pet before. The dogs and cat she had back home had either wandered to their home or she had found. She waited only a few moments before someone came up. “Not long at all,” she said with a smile. “Is there a certain process to adopt an animal? Do they have to choose you or all that?” 

Thalia had worked at the shelter since her first week in the city and she had never regretted picking this job. It was easy, fun and often quite rewarding. You got to help animals and care for them while here, and then see them find a home with someone who would continue that care. If she wasn’t behind bars, she knew she would have more than one pet. As it were, she was not allowed to own any, but she tried to make up for that by spending a lot of time with the animals when she was at work. Looking curiously at the new customer, Thalia nodded with a brief look of relief as she confirmed she hadn’t been waiting long. That was good. “Well there is some paperwork to fill out, and if you do end up wanting one of our animals with specific health needs we sometimes do a brief interview just to ensure that one is up for giving that extra care, but if you find one you like that has good health then its just the papers and our small fee.” she explained calmly while locating a stapled set of the papers she was referring too from underneath the counter, placing them there so the other could see. “This is the paperwork. Its just asking for information about you to document and sign over the animal to your care, and we like to have it so that if something happens to the animal like disease or death or there’s a reason to return it. All in all its just so that we can be notified in case of those events. Are you interested in adopting a cat or a dog?”

She could try to justify herself all she wanted, but in the end there was no changing what was done. It didn’t matter how she struggled though, he easily dragged her into the room letting her drop to the floor. He watched her scramble, trying to distance herself from him slowly, though he didn’t let her get very far. “Just you and me now. Nobody to bother us until this is all over.” His real work would only begin if there were a few that managed to escape. His hand reached for the hem of her shirt, pulling it up so it was caught on the underside of her perky breasts. “You always did have a slutty body. Maybe for once in your miserable life you’ll actually be useful to me after everything I’ve given you.” His hand groped her breast roughly. “You always were such a dumb slut, I guess this was inevitable for you, one way or another.”

Even Thalia could tell the time for talking was coming to a close. And although she might not applaud the change of events, she was ready to face whatever he decided to throw at her. She had been in the city for long enough to handle situations like these with grace and try to retain some of her dignity. Of course, it wasn’t always possible but one could try. Thalia only rolled her eyes at his words. If he thought he could scare her into submission, he had another think coming. She stilled as her shirt was being moved, lifting her chin to stare calmly, but defiantly, back at him. The rough handling did not outwardly faze her, though she could feel it in her groin, stirrings and tingles. They were there, but she could ignore them. “Slut shaming? Really? Thats what you’re going with?” she prompted, scoffing and otherwise silently shaking her head.

There was nothing he could say that would make her consider forgiving him, nor being remotely nice or cooperative. She was well aware that he had a different version of events when he looked back on it. Which was why the rift between them seemed and would probably remain irreparable. What they’d had, what they’d shared, what they had been to one another was broken. And in her opinion he was the one who had broken it. “Delusional? You’re the one who is delusional! You didn’t keep me alive for me, you did it for you! And I didn’t bring shit on myself. I trusted you with the truth and you stabbed me in the back! I helped a friend, and was ready to turn him in, and instead you took it upon yourself to do that, implicating me in the process. Well you should have let them have my head then if keeping me alive was such a burden. I would have ben fucking better off.” She snarled back, a low feral growl sounding from her when she was grabbed, hazel eyes filled with fury staring back up at him. “Saving me then doesn’t make up for tossing me into a cell. Go use that hero complex on someone who cares. And if you want grateful Russel, go find some human whore who will tell you anything you want and leave me alone. I’m not your daughter, I’m not your mentee, I’m just someone you betrayed and pretend to care for. Who wants nothing to do with you. Don’t you get that?” 

He had wasted enough time arguing with her over the years, it almost wasn’t worth it to waste words anymore. “Excuses are all you have. I had hoped that you would have realized by now that your actions have consequences. In your mind everything happens to you, and you have no responsibility and no agency.” The snarl that left her did little to scare him. “I’m not done with you yet. I guess I’ll have to train you myself it seems.” He dragged her to the basement by her throat, tossing her on the ground and locking the door behind them. “It’s been a while since you were last here wasn’t it? You were so spoiled with your last master.”

It seemed somtimes that no matter what she said, it didn’t get trough to him. Instead of a sane conversation, theirs often became an escalated blame game that never ended. “I made ONE mistake that I was about to rectify, and you made sure I never got that far. You decided to take away my chance at redemption without even talking to me about it. So who really is it that can’t accept the consequences of their actions huh? When you betrayed my trust, did you expect me to say thank you? What fucked up world do you live in..” she shook her head, freeing her chin from his grasp.

About to take a strep back, Thalia barley caught the phrase ‘train you myself’ before the world around her drastically shifted. Struggling to breathe, she still fought, lashing out with all she could until her body hit the hard floor. “As if you haven’t made my life miserable enough.” She spat, rolling her eyes and quickly getting to her feet. The basement wasn’t unfamiliar, but her memories of it was a bit hazy. “Would have preferred for it to be longer. We have very different understandings of that word.” Her voice quieter as she eased backwards, taking the space between them for as long as she could, suspecting it wasn’t going to last. A certain anticipation snaked its way into her veins, no matter how hard she tried to pretend it wasn’t there. She would never coherently admit that there were parts of her that had quite enjoyed his undivided attention.

“Dude I’m exhausted. This clean up shit sucks.” Thalia announced as she sank down on the grass next to Selene. Any slave or traitor had been ordered around, forced to clean up the rebels mess since the attack ended. One would think that it would just take a few days as they were a large number of hands at work, but since they all had nothing but human strength, it was taking forever. And while the hard labor was a good way to get a sound portion of sleep as their bodies were all drained at the end of the day, it meant you had no energy for anything else. “How was your shift?” she asked her friend and fellow wolf, hoping that maybe she wasn’t as beat as Thalia felt herself.

I always put my family first, even if you cannot see that. Just because you cannot face your own mistakes does not put it on me.”

It was a normal day at the shelter, not overly busy but customers coming now and then in an easy pace. Thalia had always loved it. She might not be the biggest people person at all times, or very good at customer service by the book, but she was a fairly decent improviser, and she thrived on getting a challenge. Filing some papers she went back to Lorenzo’s office to place them in the right folder before stopping by the pets. Some of the cats often hissed at her, making her that much more determined to win their trust and affection. 

By the time she got back out, she was uncertain just how long she had been gone, thus setting up a somewhat apologetic face to the person standing at the counter waiting. “Sorry, have you been waiting long? I just had to check with some of our cats. How may I help you today?”
