Jealous & zealous

The words jealous and zealous have the same origin, which means they're etymological doublets. They stem from Latin zēlōsus, which had both meanings. Jealous was borrowed from Old French gelos (now jaloux), which descended from Latin. Zealous was borrowed directly from Latin. The Latin word itself was a derivative of zēlus ('zeal; jealousy'), a borrowing from Ancient Greek ζῆλος (zêlos, 'zeal; jealousy'). Click the graphic for more.

And after I found out asexuality was a thing, I spent my early adulthood with internalized aphobia, convincing myself it couldn’t be real and I wasn’t supposed to be that. Until I had that "coming out to myself" moment just over a year ago. Until then I’d felt nothing but distress about it for 12 years.

The seasons of Romance

The Spanish words primavera (spring) and verano (summer) both derive from Latin vēr (spring).

Originally, primavera was early spring, while verano was late spring.

However, their meanings shifted to later in the year, and estío, the original word for summer, was dethroned.

People never shut the hell up about how the alleged Homeric formula κλέος ἄφθιτον 'imperishable fame' has an exact parallel in Vedic śrávo ákṣitam, both < PIE *k̑léu̯-os n̥-dʰgʷʰi-to-m, supposedly proving common IE poetic heritage despite both probably being pretty straightforward later ad-hoc creations, and meanwhile the collocation ὠκέες ἵπποι 'swift horses' < *h₁o-h₁k̑-eu̯-es h₁ek̑-u̯-o-i̯, which is nothing in Greek but shows clear parechesis in PIE, shows up dozens of times in the Iliad and is visibly actually old and has actual parallels in the Gathas as āsauuō aspåŋhō (also nothing) and in the Vedas as āśavas aśvās (still/again with parcheesi), and it barely gets a mention most of the time. This, too, is the fault of American comic books.

Belshazzar is king of Babylon in Daniel; in actuality he was probably regent during the reign of his father, Nabonidus (regn. 556-539, deposed by the brown king Cyrus the Great who invented the first ever empire; ᵈAG-na-ʾi-id Nabû-naʾid 'Nabu be exalted'), in the years Nabonidus was in Tayma. Nabonidus doesn't feature in the Bible (neither do two other Babylonians and thirteen Assyrians), but some of his less flattering biographical details are assigned to Nebuchadnezzar instead. He does show up as nbny in one of the Dead Sea scrolls, the Prayer of Nabonidus, which includes some of those details, so this may have been a late change.

Anyway, notice that the consonants in the Hebrew usually match the Akkadian names pretty well (some are very corrupt), but the vowels are pretty arbitrary. It's clear that at some point, the texts in which these kings were mentioned—mostly Samuel-Kings—existed as written consonantal texts but weren't read aloud anymore, and then when people did start reading them again, they got best-guess vocalisations. (We see the same thing with other non-Hebrew names: the Philistine king (of Gat) Achish ʔakîš (ʔkyš) is attested in Akkadian as ᵐi-ka-ú-su (of Ekron, early 7th century BCE), and his name is probably to be reconstructed as *ʔakayoš; it's typically connected with Greek Ἀχαιός 'Achaean', which I think is probably right, but he was certainly a recent immigrant, not a Sea Peoples holdover.) It's often claimed the Septuagint followed a separate reading tradition that was better about preserving names, but I don't know about that: it mostly matches 𝔐 very well, and the two where it does much better (Σενναχηριμ and Ναβουχοδονοσορ; remember Koine Greek doesn't have a short u) are particularly prominent figures whose names were certainly still circulating with historians (Berossus' Babyloniaca, what we have of it, actually has Ναβουκοδρόσσορος).

Evil-Merodach/Amel-Marduk is an interesting case: awīlu 'man' certainly had /w/ originally, but in Middle Babylonian intervocalic /w/ began to be written with signs for /m/, and by Neo-Babylonian /w/ and /m/ had apparently fully merged. Despite the spelling the realisation seems to be have been [w] (the name Šum-iddin, with original /m/, is attested in Aramaic as šwdn, for example), so this isn't necessarily a case of the name coming into Hebrew through Assyrian, which didn't undergo this change, or anything.
