You know, I had the option to make ANYTHING immortal. But it could only be one thing. So I hmmed and hawed over this decision. Should I save this privilege? Like what if I met someone, you know?
But I realized that I didn’t want to really bring another person into immortality. Because I’ll be here until the universe dies. And people grow apart. It’s just natural. I don’t think I could stand an eternity with just one person. So I didn’t choose for a really long time.
I don’t get sick, as an immortal. For some reason I don’t get injured either. So I couldn’t even die if I wanted to. Got the short end of the deal if you ask me, but that’s a story for another time.
I don’t remember how long it took, to be honest. I eventually found the one I would be happy to spend an eternity with. He was there in the animal shelter I was volunteering for. His sad eyes followed me as I moved about, doing my duties.
It was weeks before I realized that I needed him more than he needed me. I went for my volunteer shift one day and he wasn’t there. I panicked. I didn’t know what to do. I asked one of the regular staff what had happened and she told me he had to be taken in for emergency surgery. They had found a malignant tumor during a regular check up, but they caught it early and thought there was still a chance to save him. She said he was in recovery.
I don’t know why they let me in, but they did. He was still dozing from the anesthesia, but when I came up to his kennel and whispered his name his ears perked up, just a little. I knew then. I knew I wouldn’t have to be alone.
It didn’t matter if the surgery had actually worked, because, just like me, he could never be sick, ever again.
