conquer the winter blues II
I have a lot of bad associations with Christmas. While I can’t change the entire culture that creates those associations, I can try to get through the winter without turning into an uncharacteristic sad sack for reasons unrelated to my actual daily life.
The best way I can think to do that is by mindfully doing joyous stuff in December. Stuff that brings me joy, which may or may not be related to the Big Christian Holiday.
Here’s my list so far:
1. Read and comment on fanfic most days in December. Inspired by:
2. Get an advent calendar, except mine will be for all days in December, because hell no I’m not counting down to Christmas. I’m buying an advent calendar and then adding secret extra days to it myself, but you can also make your own. Mine is for teas!!
3. Make your New Year’s Resolutions to remind yourself what you have to look forward to.
I feel like I’ve mastered the NY’s resolution. In 2019 I watched more Studio Ghibli movies. 2020, I tried a new kind of cheese each month. 2021, new teas. 2022′s was to read books about non-people creatures. (I especially loved Fathoms: The World in the Whale, Spiders: Learning to Love Them, and The Overstory.)
I like resolutions that add cool stuff to my life that I wouldn’t have made room for otherwise. It’s a decision to make room in your life for good experiences.
4. Get a paper calendar.
More on this in a different post, but for 2023 mine is a Jackuchu calendar because I love his art.
5. Go to a garden at night.
Because they tend to be open! And lit up! The gardeners know: We need trees and night and novel things to truck through December.
6. Swim in cold water.
More on this in an upcoming post.
More to be added to this list later. Am very open to suggestions.
How do you plan to beat the S.A.D.?
