It lacks some essential tumblr features like:
Porn prohibition (its allowed)
Staff harrasing trans women (we dont do that)
Baning trans people for posting selfies (WE DONT DO THAT)
Not Allowing Female Representing Nipples (WAFRN stands for We Allow Female Representing Nipples)
Guys, Wafrn is really fun, y’all can follow people from Bluesky from there so you can have all your fandom stuff all together. I personally prefer it that way so I don’t have to make a Bluesky account, and the people I’ve encountered so far in the local server (global would be the whole fediverse) are really nice! I think it’s way better than Mastodon soooo please please please check it out

ok i still do not understand how the fediverse works. i literally just found out mastodon and bsky are connected (???) uhhh how do you. what. um. how do you connect the accounts? do you have to choose just one to use. HOW DO YOU CONNECT THE ACCOUNT? Help i have suddently become old ? and cannot understand technology ??
Mastodon and Bluesky aren’t inherently connected, however there exist a bridge that tries to connect the two, but it isn’t a full connection.
The “Fediverse” does not include Bluesky because Mastodon, Lemmy, Wafrn and all the other Fediverse social media’s use the ActivityPub protocol while Bluesky uses the AT protocol.
In simpler words, Mastodon cannot directly talk to Bluesky since they speak different languages, however a translator (the bridge) can let them communicate through it since the translator can translate things from Mastodon’s language and translate them into Bluesky’s language and vice versa.

while tumblr went down my friend & i were talking about potential alternatives in case of an actual permanent shutdown, and like instagram and Snapchat and Facebook aren’t for me, Twitter is ass, he said Bluesky isn’t much better, but he did find a place called Mastodon which he says is a “mix between tumblr and twitter” and the people on there seem chill and it’s relatively active, and in their TOS(?) they have a no transphobia policy! I haven’t made an account yet but it seems like a nice place to move in the event of tumblr going away, so i wanted to mention it in case anyone else wants to consider it too! don’t wanna have to move over with 0 friends lol

Here's an unsolicited explanation of the Fediverse for you:
The easiest way you can think of the Fediverse is many little social media websites connected to each other: if i make a post on social media website A, it will appear on social media website B and vice versa.
If you have any questions or want a more detailed explanation, feel free to ask.
The thing that kept me from embracing the fediverse more, a couple years ago, was the fact it was really hard to just - find people talking about things. The first problem is an instance not too big or small, who talk about things I'm interested in (fandom and tumblr style chatting). You've posted some that should solve that, more than I think was possible a few years back. And in theory from there i can follow anybody (ish). But practically speaking, how do I find more people who aren't on that instance? It felt very small and lonely when I tried before (or overwhelmingly loud on the big instances, of course).
Search the tags! Tag searches usually find posts from anyone using that tag regardless of what instance they’re on. Mastodon now has general word search, so you can just search “star trek” and any post mentioning Star Trek will come up.
Now, this is technically limited by the number of instances your instance is connected to, so if it’s really new or really small, you might feel limited. But if you go to mastodon.social’s website, you can use its explore and search functions without logging in. If you find someone cool, just follow them! Another site that I recommend searching through but not necessarily joining is fandom.ink.

Word needs to spread that we don’t have to be locked in these closed-silos that modern corporate-owned social media networks are!
Since 2022, blogging site Tumblr has been teasing its plans to integrate with the fediverse -- the open social web powered by the protocol A
Automattic confirmed to TechCrunch that when the migration is complete, every Tumblr user will be able to federate their blog via ActivityPub, just as every WordPress.com user can today.
Running Tumblr’s back end on WordPress would allow for greater efficiencies, while not changing the interface and experience that Tumblr’s user base has grown to love.
It's now than two months later since that article was published and we're still waiting...
I really hope Tumblr adds Fediverse integration very soon as the more social medias connect to the Fediverse the better it is for the entire ActivityPub network.
Every time there is some scare about Tumblr closing down, a sizeable part of the Tumblr community discusses how seriously about if there is a way to make Tumblr user-owned, or make it something similar to how Archive Of Our Own is owned by a non-profit funded by its own community.
Then a bunch of us over there try to explain that AO3 model doesn’t work for Tumblr because the volume of both users (Tumblr userbase is one order of magnitude bigger than AO3’s) and the kind of media (one single tumblr post with a particularly large gifset may be bigger than an entire year of new fics in AO3. And that a Kickstarter to buy Tumblr collectively wouldn’t work because the problem is not the price you could buy it for, but the monthly costs of keeping it running: you can expect to kickstart hundreds of thousands of dollars every month, forever.
What people don’t realize is that what they want, a user-owned, user-managed, non-profit, trans-friendly, anti-capitalist Tumblr is just within easy reach if they just accept: dropping the trademarked name, and giving up on keeping the Tumblr archive.
If you really would pay for a user-owned Tumblr, you can do it already. Get a web server and install Wafrn or Goblin. Install Misskey or any of its variants. Hell, install mastodon and set the post character limit to 10k. Invite all your Tumblr mutuals. Connect with the servers of other Tumblr users jumping to their own servers. If you don’t have the technical skills to manage your own server, throw some coins to those who do to help them to pay for a server. If you can’t afford spare the coins, move your content to one of those servers so more people are more easily convinced to do the jump.
Once there is a critical mass of Tumblr users moving to user-owned, federated servers, then Tumblr users, in practice, would have migrated the tumblr community to a version of Tumblr that is just what we all have wanted for years.
We can do this, the pieces are an in place. We just need the collective will.

kobold is now running the very latest released code! It looks tons nicer thanks to a bunch of style work @jv did, and also includes a feature I worked on that I'm really proud of: tag follows.
Click through a post's tag, then click the follow button, and your timeline now magically includes every post that arrives on the server with that tag! (Except, of course, for anyone you are muting or blocking. They can continue to pound sand.)
There's no page in your profile where you can get a list of all the tags you're currently following. Yet.
There's no "Block #fandom" button, for when you are just sick and goddamn tired of everyone's blorbo and want the tag to magically disappear completely from your timeline. Yet.
(The backend code for tag blocking is already in place, it's just not exposed in the UI.)

Goblin is a really good Fediverse platform and I encourage Tumblr users to sign up for it. It is one of the easiest (if not the easiest) way to join the Fediverse for Tumblr users.

Threads federation is a great step into the way of Federated social media. I hope Tumblr does the same.
Instead of celebrating the fact that @President Joe Biden has entered the Fediverse via threads, it should be noted how much European institutions actively participate in the Fediverse. They do this with their own servers and without using commercial providers.

just in case anyone's wondering: my official posting order is mastodon -> tumblr -> twitter -> cohost. sometimes it's different because I have an idea while I'm browsing a site further down the list but this is usually how it stands
Once Tumblr federates you can skip the Tumblr/Mastodon step since a post will be visible from both platforms.
