when will there be another social media site that allows for actual profile customization. i joined goblin.band as a backup but its the same fucking icon + banner that every other site uses. please god just let me show some PERSONALITY. a page doll. custom background. full html and css if you really wanna be niceys. SOMETHING.

Join Me in Being Multi-Social!

Social media is bad. All sites seem to have some factor that appears designed to annoy you specifically. Or they don't have a feature you really want. Not only that, but all the big sites seem to be competing now for the prize of worst social media site. There are no easy answers to this problem. But there are options to consider.

For me, I've found maintaining a presence on multiple social media sites to be very useful. It means I can try out different features and see the different social dynamics on different sites. It also means that unless my entire connection goes down, I can always be on social media. Always online. Yes, it's a pain to sign up for multiple sites, but you only have to do the signup once per site. After that, just switch between sites and keep posting and interacting with the people on the different sites.

And viola! You've decentralized your social media.

You may not use each site the same amount, but there's quite a difference between an occassionally used account and an empty or abandoned one in terms of easing the transition if you end up losing your favorite social media (like if it intentionally shoots itself in the foot...).

Alright, I've had by goblin.band account (I believe it is currently invite only) for like a week now, and I'm loving it. Everything works so smoothly. All the UX niceties I've come to expect as an end user in the last decade are present, and none of the really tedious jingle-jangly stuff.

Obviously I'm not a power user or anything; I reblog 2 shitposts a day max.

But the environment is so much More Useable than my last venture into the twitter-inspired corners of the fediverse.

I think you all are gonna really like it when it goes public (if? I forget if this is a project for public use on the site vs for making your own self hosted copy).

Goblin.band is pretty good at looking like Tumblr-flavored Fediverse, and kind of crap at actually interacting with the Fediverse.

Thanks to @this-is-ris (post here) for introducing me to this.

It fairly well replicates the feeling of Tumblr, but is part of the Fediverse, which I'm ALL for.

I've been using Mastodon as a Twitter replacement for quite a while now, so I'm pretty comfortable with fediverse things. I was excited to see that the tag search on goblin.band actually pulls up some of the FFXIV folks I know on my Mastodon server - so this is truly a federated thing!
