thinking about scifi/fantasy trans characters who get magically zapped with a plot device and get to skip actually transitioning. i guess i can see why the trope is popular among trans authors (usually and understandably wish fulfillment) but among cis authors it seems to be, more often than not, an excuse to label a character as transgender without actually writing them as transgender. yea this smoking hot babe was a guy once but ehhh theres magic and shit dont worry about it. she didnt have to do any of that gross icky stuff with the hormones and surgery and shit. she looks just like a cis woman. isnt that better. dont you like that. isnt it cleaner if her transness is relegated to an irrelevant tag for x1.5 woke mult with little to no bearing on her character. then again the thought of a cis author trying to describe a clocky trans woman makes me want to vomit so maybe this is an acceptable compromise actually

#also if its YA i guess theres a point there about teaching kids that being trans is solely the domain of fantasy #“oh i can be like that!” well you cant its magic and the real stuff is too weird and gross for the author to touch with a ten foot pole etc #moral of the story: if ur transgender you have to fucking write please for the love of god
