iâm cry-laughing at the thought of ronan digging through declan's "trashâ and finding a handbook for "Loving and Supporting Your LGBTQ Childâ.
hi. declan bought matthew a gigantic set of nail polish for his 15th birthday because he saw how stupidly happy matthew was when he had come home one day with painted nails. since then matthew has never been seen without ( disastrously ) painted on neon coloured nails that somehow always get chipped after a day of wearing.
until book 2 comes out and we know more; iâm going with the theory that mor o c.orra is a dreamer. she left declan with niall when he was a few months old and the mother & son have never met again until the fairy market incident. she has been keeping tabs on him all those years through the new fenian ( âthis head still loves you like you were mine. itâs been watching when it can.â ), not out of love per se, but out of moral obligation, needing to fulfil some sort of parental duty to subdue her guilt for leaving him.

itâs okay lynch... i know youâre in love with me đâšâ
declan froze. after a few seconds of complete stillness, he asked, â come again? â his lips had moved before the rest of him did. nothing in his expression hinted that he had actually registered the blondâs tease. he was good at faking it. maybe too good. the raven-haired boy gestured lazily to his ear. â sorry, itâs the accent. itâs so hard to understand you brits sometimes. â
recency bias speaking here but trc/aftg crossover au where one of mary and neilâs document forgery contacts was niall lynch (there is no passport that is better than a dreamt passport) and the physical handoffs were only done between neil and declan because hey, seems less likely to be suspicious when itâs just two kids meeting up. except both boys are fully outfitted in bullet proof vests under their shirts and guns tucked hidden at their hips and told they have to be vigilant, even with this kid their own age. itâs drilled into them to be wary of each other always, but they form something arguably resembling friendship, or at least understanding of a peer stuck neck deep in a dangerous world where itâs lonely and no one else will ever fully get it like they do
I read somewhere on Maggie's old tumblr blog that Niall left the Lynch brothers 5 million each + properties. The 5 million thing is also in Dream Thieves (? I think) when Ronan read's Niall's will. With 15 millions total not in investments but in their bank accounts, they're pretty rich.
For some reason I had thought that we didnât get definite figures cited in the will, but I was wrong about that, so thanks! Here are the relevant parts:
So assuming these numbers are accurate, the Lynch family assets as of the time of Niallâs death are:
$9m in liquid assets (when youâve got 7+ figures, your shit is invested; itâs not sitting in a bank account earning 2% a year. But we can decide that theyâre fairly liquid investments and not tied up in real estate or IRAs or w/e)
$23m in a trust, to manage the Barns and to cover the brothersâ education, âcare,â and housing
a second trust, funding unknown, to care for Aurora
The Barns, value unknown
an empty field in Northern Ireland, value unknown
a townhouse in Alexandria, Virginia; my good buddy Zillow suggests that $600k is not an unreasonable value to slap on this bad boy
Eyeballing this, Iâm going to call it a $40 million estate. Which is higher than I was thinking; I had expected there had to be some kind of trust for Aurora, because whoâs paying those home nurses we hear about, but I really hadnât figured on the twenty-three million in the Barns & Boys trust.
In terms of how this impacts my assessment of their day-to-day financial status: not much? If theyâve each got $3m for their principle instead of $2m like Iâd figured, now weâre talking annual income of $75k for each of them. This is not actually a preposterous income. I had theâŠmixedâŠfortune of being on the outskirts of a social group where everyone was in roughly this income bracket while I made, ha, significantly less, so I absolutely agree that this is an obnoxious amount of money for young childless single people to make, but itâs not world breaking, which is a consideration that I am interested in when trying to figure out what rules apply to a fictional character.
Of course, this is money the Lynches donât have to work to make, which is a glaring huge privilege. And on top of that income, theyâve got a trust that covers their âcare, education, and housing,â so their expenses are going to be lower than most peopleâs. They donât have to pay rent, presumably the trust covers property taxes, they wonât have student loan debtâŠIâm a little unclear what âcareâ is supposed to mean but I imagine itâs things like medical bills as opposed to groceries, just because I canât imagine anyone going through the hassle of balancing the trustâs books every time they go to Kroger.
But they canât actually spend that $23m on things beyond what itâs earmarked for. To paraphrase Chidi, thatâs called embezzlement and itâs generally frowned upon. Besides, âstealing from and thereby jeopardizing the family and the family homeâ would be rather out of character for any of these boys. We know that Declan is the executor of the trust (as always, what the fuck, Niall) until all the boys are eighteen, but we donât know what happens after that. Possibly the trust could be dissolved and they could each take $7.something millionâŠto what end? The Barns will still need to upkeep (unless it no longer exists, I wonât be surprised if the Barns doesnât survive The Dreamer Trilogy), and theyâre all trust beneficiaries already. So it only makes sense to do if they want or need to make some kind of big purchase, at which point â poof! â the moneyâs gone. Itâs a Daffy Duck stunt: a great trick but they can only do it once.
So I stand by my assessment. They donât have the funds to continuously spend big sums. They have an estate that provides each of them with a middle class income â which is a huge amount of privilege! It definitely makes them ârich.â I suppose at the end of the day weâre quibbling over degrees of ârich,â but quibbling over canon is fun. I donât find it unreasonable that Declan would be stressed about spending the sums that he spends in this book, and I donât think that anything weâve been told before is inconsistent with anything that gets said in Call Down the Hawk.

declan will say that he took latin at aglionby because itâs the language of law and government and the catholic church đđ but donât fall for it, itâs all lies. he took latin because he saw a movie about the romans at a sleepover and had become obsessed with ancient rome the week before they had to choose what language to learn.
