RE: the lies we tell ourselves au // tlwto // moon knight au
i want to delve into again, im not gonna lie. the version that i actually wanted to tell but chickened out of anyway. i still wan to share it, even if it won't be on ao3 like originally planned.
im going to go character by character starting with layla ! i will link all of them after theyre posted but this is essentially the front page
saw someone say they feel bad and awkward ‘contributing nothing’ to fandom (“no fics, no drawings, no theories, just gluttony”) and to anyone who feels inferiority about this i gotta say us creators, doing things for free, love nothing more than your unbridled spiralling greed in our notifications aka genuinely be more unapologetically gluttonous 24/7 there is nothing wrong with enjoying something insatiably because us writers and artists feel empty and despairing without a passionate audience and feral surroundings so please and thank you and we love you
yes!!!! you CAN contribute something!!!!! if you feel guilty, you can:
reblog art instead of just liking it! not only will you increase the amount of people who see it (more cool people seeing cool art!!!!) but then you can also leave some nice comments in the tags about how cool the art is!!!
no theories??? you can reblog the ones you really like, or even question the ones you don’t! fandom thrives on engagement! i’m not saying yell at someone for having a different opinion, but there’s no harm saying “oh, i didn’t see it that way. can you tell me more?” if you know of someone who has cool/interesting theories, please encourage them to talk more about it!! they probably held back the first time!
COMMENT ON FIC!!!!!! please, we are begging. literally just a heart emoji as a second kudos feels like the bare minimum but damn… sometimes we out here getting NO comments. one single emoji in the inbox might MAKE SOMEONE’S DAY.
if you feel guilty, if you feel greedy, ENGAGE WITH THE CONTENT
speaking of reality tv i know i said a while back that i could see an love island au with transformers but yo i cannot have any more au's 😭
anyway...i just think itd be fun to think about OG vs bombshells and like what parts of them would be better suited for them. like drift would be an OG, i could see rodimus being an OG bc they always need someone kind of crazy in there to keep things interesting
ratchet ? yo that man could not be an OG he would be stuck there for 6-8 weeks but i could see him being casa bc you need interesting personalities to tempt couples but casa people don't stay in the show that long especially if they dont make it into a couple so i could so see drift as an og kind of struggling, trying stuff out and then casa amor happens and BAM there's ratchet
rodimus tbh would be like first or second bombshell who basically are OGs because they are there since like day 1 or 2, im picturing (if you seen LI US s6) how Liv was. especially since Liv made it pretty far despite not having a solid couple bc of her friendships in the villa and considering rodimus' chaotic energy...yeah
ppl trying to grand stand and moralize reality tv are the most insufferable people ever like go watch a different genre 💀
yall dont know these people. its supposed to be messy because humans are messy. its fucking love island !!! you look ridiculous GET A GRIP. half the shit is edited to fit storylines, ofc people are going to fight and argue and say tactless mean things to each other. please relax-the mess is the POINT
i think you should be allowed to identify as trans without retroactively saying you were also trans in the past. i think the "born this way" rhetoric is limiting and you should be able say stuff like "i was fully a girl when i was a kid and now im a boy" without it invalidating your current identity but maybe that's just me
maybe i like pulling out my debit card instead of using apple pay. maybe i like untangling my wired headphones. maybe i like typing something into the search bar instead of using siri or whatever. maybe i like curating my own social media feeds over an algorithm. i just don’t think everything has to be perfectly streamlined and efficient i like it when things feel tethered to the real world.
this has been in my drafts forever because I have a huge rant for it that I haven't had the energy to type out, but I think I finally do
There is one issue with this whole thing and that is: none of these things that tech bros are advertising are actually inconvenient, and in most cases they're the exact opposite.
Setting up apple pay (in my experience) is a hassle, and is a security vulnerability (the more companies directly connected to your bank, the more likely it is to get hacked), all for what? So you can take 3 less seconds taking out and swiping/inserting a card?
Untangling wired headphones? A hassle sure. Not as much of a hassle as losing only one ear pod, or one ear pod consistently dying faster than the other, or pairing issues, or worse sound quality at a higher price because it's wireless. How is any of that more convenient? It's like the same amount of convenience
Or how about siri and google always missing hearing what you say? Censoring swears despite being an adult? Going off when you don't say it's name?
Having algorithms currate your own feed leading to echo chambers, and radicalization pipelines, and making it harder to find the stuff you want, with yts new horrible search algorithm etc etc
None of these are more convenient, they're the same amount or worse. But guess what? They make money. So they're sold as convenient.
Next time you see a product that advertises that it's "convenient" ask for a moment what convenience are you actually getting? And is it comproable to that you already have?
To start—I adored watching her in the show. She has such a fun personality and a lot of things that we don't know which is my playground. Obviously, her marriage with Marc is a huge aspect of her life, but she's an individual first. i never once thought that her world would revolve around Marc. Considering her ties to Egypt, for her home base it couldn't be anywhere else. Her whole thing—being a Robin Hood of sorts—means she's not stationary. But when there's time Egypt is where she's at. Scarlet Scarab, Avatar of Tawaret Goddess of women and children.
Except that Layla doesn't have traditional maternal instincts. Layla is good with kids and generally likes them, but her own are not in the picture. When watching Tawaret and Layla in the show, I saw their scenes like a nagging mom and daughter. One where Layla knows what she wants in her life: to be another person that can be dependable, rights previous wrongs rather than continue to perpetuate cycles. Of course Tawaret aligns with that as women and children are the usual targets.
There's freedom in how Layla wants to tackle being an avatar, Tawaret isn't controlling like certain others, but she is opinionated. Layla isn't brutal, but analytical and willing to do shit that sucks for the bigger picture. She's not afraid to put her life in danger or get her hands dirty, she doesn't shy from challenges or danger or adventure. Which she was taught by her father and is part of why she continues her work-as a tribute to him. The omission would've been a way bigger divide between them. Even though Marc didn't kill Layla's dad, he never told her he was there.
Back when they were dating he would've comforted her, apologizing when she tells him about her father's death, like he wasn't a witness to it. Involved, even if not responsible. And he went on to marry her, still not saying anything. Kinda fucked man.
Anyway most Layla/Tawaret missions would be similar to the boys intro to Tawaret on the boat-screams of what are you doing and questionable choices, but the goal is reached. And we've seen that they have mutual trust and respect with each other.
I would do parallels between Tawaret and what she imagines or hopes a mother to be since she was raised solely by her dad. I was leaning towards Layla's mom just walking out/not wanting the baby rather than death. The gods and their avatars are good metaphors for parenthood/mentorship type stuff especially as a comparison from chosen family versus biological and nature vs nurture. Like if Layla's sees her own lack of maternal instinct to a thing that maybe runs in the family, making Tawaret being her avatar more interesting as well.
Now for her relationship with Marc. Most of my original thoughts did end up in the series. Out of misunderstanding/ignorance originally, Layla doesn't see Steven as seperate from Marc. A part of Marc, but individually. The kiss with Steven doesn't bother her because she's kissing Marc. But she wouldn't stop at trying to understand them.
That couldn't happen if they just pick up where they left off.
So they would separate. Not forever, but enough to work on themselves. Re-Dating and rebuilding trust. Still legally married, but only in paper.
As much as I can sympathize with Marc, he put her in an awful situation. Backsliding into what they're used to, just because now she knows he has DID doesn't fix anything. She deserves to think about how Marc lied to her for years so easily. She should have the space to do that. Layla loves Marc. But I can't see how she can while adjusting/ re-contextualize/re-evaluating what she actually knows about her husband.
She would get there. Essentially able to redefine their relationship to be healthier, more equitable, and still allow themselves freedom and privacy. She's able to actually hold power in the relationship rather than held at the whims of Marc's dishonesty or distancing.
Layla and Marc to me are that hot couple who trust each other implicitly. Even if they're not always together for long periods. Like your wine aunt and her husband with gifts to hand out very flippantly. Not even in a showy way, but like "you said u needed x so here. relax. just shut and take it." No kids of their own between them, but they integrate themselves into the area. Maybe a little odd, because no one knows how they make their money, but ultimately nothing but helpful where ever they went.
So where did all this go?
I wanted to write this, but at the same time there wasn't really proper spacing for it. I ended feeling rushed because ultimately, the boys were my main focus and with all their moving pieces I ran out of steam. The fic with the two of them relearning how to be around each other was because of all of the above + Marc's repressed stuff.
But I doubted my grasp on Layla and got nervous for people to react to my characterization. It felt like all anyone wanted to see was Layla and Marc happy, and despite never getting a comment that actually said that I got stuck. Stuck thinking about all the thinkposts and callouts when it comes to writing female characters especially alongside male characters. That no matter how much thought went into Layla, I'd somehow be called a misogynist who puts men on a pedestal.
Now I regret being afraid. Who cares? It's my fic. Plus, it was never going to be about Layla. I was exploring DID system concepts which is a disorder Layla does not have.
Throughout the series some of these themes are still present, or I hope so, but none of it goes in depth. I also did not actually have an outline I was spit-balling so it felt very disorganized and I said fuck it!
I also wanted to avoid any kind of Marc/Steven/Layla vs Marc/Layla vs Marc/Steven. I let my anxiety spiral and made the easy choice to just rush through it to get to where I was more comfortable.
So sorry Layla. You deserved better than that lmao

the story goes like bruce hates the criminal element, he despises looters, thieves. along comes jason. hes a thief but he has a good heart and doesnt want to hurt anyone. a boy of the "criminal element" can be good. can be a hero. jason is murdered. retroactively his criminality determined this would always happen. Stephanie is not herself a criminal but is tainted by association with her father. there is no hope for crime ally. leslie is a fraud and a murderer. every adaptation pushes jason away from "before bruce exposed him to violence he was not violent, he was good; red hood is batmans creation" and explicitly into "jason was always bad, batman made a bad character judgment, jason was unhelpable"
