I barely have seen anyone talk about this and I want to talk about it.

A few days ago the islandic glacier Ok 'died'. It is the first glacier in Island to lose its status as glacier because too much of it melted because it is too warm. All other islandic glaciers are expected to follow.

In the image you can see the plaque they put up by the remains of the glacier when they held a funeral for it.

The plaque says:

"A letter to the future

Ok is the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier.

In the next 200 years all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path.

When I first read that it made me cry.

Because it hits really hard.

Because we do know what's happening and we do know what needs to be done but no one in power who could change anything and no CEOs of the corporations that are destroying our earth are doing enough to stop the destruction and save the earth, our home.

This year many countries had heat records, the amazon is burning, almost every day a different species of animals is declares extinct.

We are losing our home and while the little things we can do like stop using single use plastic, eating less meat and dairy, using cars less, etc. are helping. That won't save the earth. We are lost if we can't get politicians and corporations to change something.

As of today, Jul. 7, 2020, they also have had only 22 deaths. Their population is 4.88 million, which is somewhere between the population of Louisiana and Alabama.

New Zealand has had about 1 death per every 221,818 people.

The USA has had about 1 death per every 2,458 people.

This means the death rate per population in the US is over 90 times as high.

We were required to have 0 active cases for weeks before the thought of reopening the country, and currently, life in New Zealand is essentially back to normal, with the only difference being that most educational facilities and businesses have a plan if we were required to increase alert levels.

The economy is already beginning to recover, all because our prime minister not only listened to the scientists but also prioritised human life over all else, and very aptly pointed out time and time again that while a longer period of total lock down may have an immediately detrimental economic impact, it would be worse if we did not completely eliminate.

We have not had a death in the country since the end of May, and the patient who died of COVID-19 was actually ruled to have recovered from the virus, but was included in the death count to allow the country to get a better idea of the full impact of the country.

As of today (July 8th) there are 22 active cases in New Zealand, all of whom are people returning from overseas, and all are in managed isolation. Covid-19 in New Zealand is effectively contained.

This is what happens when you listen to the health professionals, and act accordingly.
