Everything must come to an end. Just like everything must be born, in order to end. So, when did this war start?
Fire Nation. A hundred years prior. Grand and powerful. Led by Fire Lord Sozin, her great–grandfather. He exploited his nation’s superiority in the economic, military and technologic fields to conquer the whole world. Starting from the Air Nomads. It led to the extermination of the Air Nomads. Written in the books like the greatest military expedition to ever succeed, and the first step to win the war. A comet— later named after the Fire Lord— used to cause death and chaos. The day became one of celebration in the Fire Nation. Capital City flooded with the entire population, drinking, eating and putting on Agni Kai’s like there’s no tomorrow.
It used to be her favourite day. Why not? For a kid— or even better, a royal family member— witnessing her subjects celebrating her family’s grandeur was the best feeling ever. Could anyone ever blame a little child?
Then came the Near–Eradication of the Southern Water Tribe. Every breathing waterbender was taken from their homes, from their loved ones and kept in metal prisons with no access to water. Eventually, they all died and just like that, the Southern Water Tribe had no more existing waterbenders. However, there was the possibility that one would be born. The solution came instinctively to her grandfather, Fire Lord Azulon; Raids. Every few years, Fire Navy fleets soared the sea with their mission clear. Killing on sight every waterbender. Ironically, that's how her boyfriend’s mom died. By hand of her nation. Of her family. But she swore to be different.
And this war, the Hundred Year War, would've lasted less, if her uncle Iroh succeeded in his Siege of Ba Sing Se, six years prior. It lasted six hundred days. Fire Nation armies trying to beat down the city's walls in vain. But, she knew, if her uncle had been successful, if he had been able to take control of the Earth Kingdom, he'd have been crowned Fire Lord instead of her father. She knew Iroh. He wouldn't have carried on such atrocities if he was on the throne. Yet, history didn't go down like that. He was unsuccessful, and his own brother Ozai took advantage of it, and made their father strip down his right to rule. That's all went down horribly, in her opinion. Prince Ozai being crowned Fire Lord. And herself becoming the Princess.
Next, there was the Northern Water Tribe. Well, it certainly hindered Fire Nation's rise to power, for a good hundred years. Their icy walls slowed them down, and the waterbenders took the opportunity to chase them away every single time. That, until Commander Zhao was appointed to lead one, last, final raid. And he won. Even with the presence of the Avatar, considered dead for a century. Commander Zhao really took matters in his own hands, and murdered the Moon Spirit to achieve one of the greatest glories to be remembered amongst Fire Nation civilians. The Siege of the North. That, too, ironically caused the death of another of her boyfriend’s loved ones. Princess Yue of the Northern Water Tribe sacrificed her life to give it back to the Moon Spirit, becoming it herself.
Fast forward to the Coup of Ba Sing Se. The Fall of the Earth Kingdom. The Fall of Ba Sing Se. Or as she called it, ‘The Start of the Final Act’. Among all, it's the one that left the deepest scar on her heart. Her own twin led the attack. With cunning and strategy, she had to admit. But horrible nonetheless. Azula, along with Mai and Ty Lee, had placed a gigantic drill to break down the infamous walls, and later infiltrated into the Palace and controlled the Dai Li. She was asked to take part in it, of course. Azula's sadistic and subtly mean, but even she couldn't deny the bond they shared. Under so many lights, they were the same. And not only in appearance, as that was obvious. She, too, had her own sadistic streak. She wasn't by any means proud of it, didn't celebrate it like Azula. She couldn't hide it. Especially not from her sister. However, she called herself out of it, not swayed by her promises of joint glory and utter admiration from their nation. The will to remain in their homeland and tend to inside issues masked her true reasonings. She didn't share the beliefs her father, her sister and whole family harbored deep into their souls. Even a whisper of it, and she'd be disowned and threw in a cell.
Except she wasn't all alone. Along the way of trying to do the right thing, she found friends. She didn't get tons of those back in the palace. Not when she intimidated everyone around her. Not when there's no one her age. And perhaps it did took a while to get said friends to like her— and still not everyone truly trusted her—, but their friendship went a long way. Now, she wasn't alienated from group decisions, like her brother. She took part in them, and brought her two cents too. Her opinions were deemed useful, necessary. So why didn't her will matter, now?
Reunited at camp amongst the forest, she and Zuko had found their uncle, Iroh. Not only him, but every other master of every element was present. A group of old men, really. Really fit old men.
“Well, here we are”, started King Bumi. “Welcome to Old People Camp”
“You guys living in tents?”, she asked grimacing slightly.
“Too dull for you, Princess?”, grumbled Jeong Jeong under his breath.
She frowned at him, and caught up with her brother. “That oldie is seriously getting on my nerves”, she mumbled.
But Zuko was too lost in his thoughts to pay her attention. He stared longingly at the biggest tent in the corner, hesitant to do anything else than stare. Recognition flashed behind her amber eyes, that softened instantly looking up at her brother.
“You should go. When has he ever not forgiven you?”, she placed her hand on his shoulder.
“He hates me”, he mumbled, kneeling right a few steps before the tent. “He loved me and supported me in every way he could… And I still turned against him. How can I even face him?”, he looked away in shame.
“Zuzu,” she muttered, hoping the firmness of her voice would cut through the despair in her brother's eyes. “Uncle could never hate you.” She lowered herself to the ground alongside him, knees hitting the packed dirt with a quiet thud.
“You're his favourite. Everyone sees that. Azula's too sadistic, and I'm too much like Azula. Hell, I still think someone here’s doubting where my loyalty lies”, she chuckled under her breath.
“If Uncle didn't truly love you, he wouldn't have followed you onto that ship to achieve an impossible task. Who in their right mind would give up luxury and nobleness for a ship life? Who does that, huh?”
He finally locked her eyes with him, and suddenly he was dragged into his memories. The day of his banishment.
A thirteen year old Zuko angrily packing a sack in his room, Azula's taunting successful in its intent. A soft, barely–there knock then took him out of mind, and a head of silky hair peeped from the heavy doors. Sharp amber eyes stared up at him, perhaps with guilt or wicked satisfaction, he never could read them. Her feet padded through his room until they reached the edge of his bed, and quietly took a seat on his red bedding.
“What are you doing here, YN?”, he mumbled softly, still visibly affected by Azula's words.
“Do you have to?”, she simply asked. No sharp–edged smirks, no undertones meant to hurt him. He still could picture that sight. Just his sister, the younger twin, gazing up at him and being genuinely worried she'll never see him again.
He was taken aback by that sincerity, honestly. He was so used to watch her causing shenanigans around with Azula, that he almost forgot how much more sensitive she was. The twins were always so in tune with each other, that he almost forgot that they were two different girls. And so, after a few minutes of utter silence, he took a seat beside her and held her gaze confidently.
“I'll be back before you even notice”, he reassured quietly.
“But Azzie said—”
“— Azula always lies. Don't believe everything she says”, he said firmly.
“I trust Azula”, she said just as firmly. “But I don't want you to leave, Zuzu”
That's when he realised she would never truly betray her sister. It scared him to the bone. The realization sent a cold shiver down his spine. Even as a twelve year old, YN knew she'd never do anything against her sister. Zuko didn't really know how to react to that. He didn't trust Azula, unlike her, but he didn't want to leave either. Just like their mom…
He turned to face her properly, and gently coaxed her into his arms, letting out a breath he didn't know he was holding when she relaxed into his embrace.
He was brought back to reality by her arms closing around his shoulders, just like he did three years ago. The memory felt a hundred years ago. He let her hold him there, on the ground, before their uncle’s tent where he was awaiting him, with their friends witnessing everything.
“He does. Uncle does that”, he replied softly over her shoulder.
“Then go, Zuzu”, she prompted and pulled away. “I'm sure he's in there waiting for you with a cup of steaming tea”, she grinned and stood up, dusting her clothes.
His lips curved up slightly, and he finally found the courage to stand himself. Their eyes, so similar yet so different, stayed locked for a few seconds before he murmured a thank you just for her to hear. And with deep breath, he marched through the tent.
Turns out the order of the White Lotus was a pretty numerous group.
She hadn't been aware of its existence for long, just since the day before. And as far as she knew, they were a mere group of four old, retired men meeting up and playing Pai Sho with nothing to do all day. She couldn't really imagine them doing anything else, to be honest. Some may think of her as a stuck–up for it, but she'd only agree on the spot. From the looks of it, those were frail old men with bad curved backs and wrinkles all over them. She never once saw someone that old stand their ground in a fight. So yeah— group of retired, old men wasting their time playing Pai Sho.
She took the liberty to take her sweet time getting ready for the day. Especially when it had already started disastrously. Fate was definitely on her back.
Her back had creaked loudly enough for her to believe Old Camp had passed her on the first signs of old age when she tried to sit up after waking up. Her hair was all over the place. What used to be a long, black, silk head envied by every noble woman in the kingdom had managed to turn into a bird nest overnight. Wrinkles deeper than King Bumi’s had made their way onto her robes, too. It's safe to say the day couldn't have started worse.
She was wrong. Because the moment she stepped foot outside the tent— that she had to share with Katara and Toph—, and hard, dry earth cracked under her soles, her vision was overwhelmed with senior citizens huddled up. She was left speechless. Her beliefs shuttered in under a second. The Order was not a mere group of wrinklies playing around.
She begrudgingly had to admit it. Jeong Jeong was right, after all. As she walked through the groups, she picked up hush conversations made over a modest breakfast. She could hear it. Philosophy, beauty, truth. Just as he had said. Just like the old firebending master had explained.
“—Uncle, you are the only person other than the Avatar who can possibly defeat the Father Lord”, was reasoning Zuko, though his words went unheard by Iroh.
She quietly took her place beside her boyfriend, legs folded under her weight, and accepted with a smile a bowl of food from him. She watched the conversation unfold around her, still trying to shove off the early morning grumpiness.
“—You mean the Fire Lord”, swallowed soundly Toph.
“That's what I just said!”
Iroh sighing was all he needed to snap back his focus. “We need you to come with us”, he pleaded.
Meanwhile, Iroh looked deep in thought, as if weighing out every possible chance of movement they had. “No, Zuko. It won't turn out well”, he finally regarded with a low tone that suggested he had come to a decision.
Zuko, though, wasn't one to give up easily when he deeply believed in something. “You can beat him, and we'll be there to help”, he insisted.
“Even if I did defeat Ozai,” sighed Iroh. “And I don't know that I could”, he glanced pointedly at his nephew, “It would be the wrong way to end the war”
“History would see it as just more senseless violence, a brother killing a brother to grab power”, he explained, everyone hanging by his words, including her. His wisdom had travelled far, and reached even the most hidden corners of the world. And now, it was needed more than ever.
“The only way for this war to end peacefully is for the Avatar to defeat the Fire Lord”
They all glanced around each other, various levels of worry and concern etched on their faces. Dread had silently laced around them, soft and silky like a ribbon. No one had dared address the elephant in the room, yet. Aang was still nowhere to be found. He was like… Wiped off the face of the Earth. Not even June and her Shirshu were able to locate him. How was the Avatar supposed to save the world, when he was lost somewhere?
She didn't dare raise her eyes from her bowl. None of this was her fault, but it didn't stop a cold wave of guilt to make its way in her veins. The same silk ribbon that held her friends hostage was enclosing around her throat. Not quite a choking grip. Enough to make sure she felt uncomfortable taking every single breath. Making her feel trapped in a small, but fancy room with no windows and not enough air to survive.
After all, her family had started the genocides all those years ago. And she did nothing to stop it from escalating. What did she do? Turning her head away didn't make the pain around her disappear. It didn't resolve it either. On the contrary, it just welcomed with open arms an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of her stomach. She dreamt of leading her reign, the great Fire Nation, to a period of gold, bright splendor. To be adored by her people, perhaps even feared. War wasn't how she meant to achieve that. Her father couldn't do it, too.
Or… Could he? Aang wasn't there to stop him. No one was stopping her father. He'd conquer the whole world, force it to kneel before him, and she'd watch from the sidelines. Was it really not her fault? If she truly held the four nations’ balance in her heart, she'd have done something by now. Isn't it why she went out her way, and risked disownment in the first place? Joining the Avatar group. To make the world a safe place again. To rebel against Fire Nation’s toxic supremacy.
She forced herself to lift her gaze from her lap. Her amber eyes landed on the figure of her older brother. It was like looking in a mirror. His hair fell upon his forehead, doing little to veil his downcast eyes, lips pulled in a tight frown. Never had she realised how much alike they were before. She only ever paired herself with Azula. Always presented as one everywhere. At parties, in meetings, during public appearances. It's always “Look, the twins!”, but never “Oh, it's Princess Azula and Princess YN!”. Sometimes she convinced herself she'd never make her way out of the shared spotlight.
But looking at Zuko now made her realise they were so much alike too. Perhaps not looks–wise, but instead they shared the same weight on the shoulders they carried around since the start of this whole ordeal. To be quite frank, she never viewed him as her oldest brother. He was older, yes, and she looked up to him as a kid. Though, the oldest sibling figure always belonged to Lu Ten— she was sure he'd agree with her. She'd been devastated the day the letter arrived. When their mother announced it. It truly felt like losing a sibling to both of them.
So she wondered how he was feeling now. Zuko took more part in the war and everything surrounding it than her. In addition to everything she herself felt. He must have felt horrible. Maybe that's why he was so headstrong to get Uncle Iroh to defeat their father. Because he was too terrified of it. To confront him again after willingly leaving the palace.
“And then…”, he quietly spoke up. She'd never seen him so devastated. “Then would you come and take your rightful place on the throne?”
Iroh's answer was what took her out of her self–despisal. His “no” sounded so… Final and firm, that it knocked the air out of her lungs. Sokka noticed and placed a hand on her knee.
“Are you okay?”, he whispered tenderly, trying to ground her with his touch.
His words went over her head completely. She stared up at her uncle, wanting to ask a million questions at once. He wouldn't? He was denying the throne, again? But… Why?
“Then… Who?”, she made herself heard since joining in the morning. Though, her voice lacked the usual confident lilt it always possessed.
Sokka felt almost sick. It was the first time for him where he saw her purposely making herself smaller. His girlfriend wasn't small by any means. He knew her. Better than she thought. He felt the walls she built around herself crumble and the mask fall without her noticing on multiple occasions with him. And even then, she was bright and never once insecure or hesitant. He wasn't weirded out by her behaviour. He was worried sick this whole ‘kill the Fire Lord and take on the throne’ ordeal was shaking her more than she let on.
Iroh finally addressed her. “Someone new must take the throne”, he replied. Then, he laid his eyes on Zuko. “An idealist with a pure heart and unquestionable honor. It has to be you, Prince Zuko”
He looked taken aback at that. “Unquestionable honor? But I've made so many mistakes”, he tried to reason.
“Yes, you have”, Iroh smiled tenderly. “You struggled, you suffered… But you have always followed your own path. You restored your own honor”
“And only you can restore the honor of the Fire Nation”, he added firmly.
Zuko shook his head. He was in pure disbelief. He ran his hands through his hair and scoffed lightly. “She's more suitable”, he nodded to her.
“She's always dreamt of becoming Fire Lady. She's more firm than me. She's a superior bender than me. She's a prodigy”, he said through his teeth, knuckles turning white. His sisters had always been worthier of everything. “She already has our people’s loyalty. I–I don’t!”
It was Iroh's turn to disagree. “YN’s a wild fire. Too impulsive for the role”
He glanced at her, his face warm and tender as usual. “I love her as my own daughter”, he smiled. “But even she knows her flaws”
She was not gonna lie. It felt like a cold bucket of water had just been thrown at her. He spoke all truths. But it hurt, hurt like a bitch to have her dreams crushed right in front of her. This day was getting worse by the second.
She forced a half–hearted chuckle and shrugged— everyone could see she was pretending not to be offended. “I am, aren't I?”
The grip on her knee tightened. She looked up, and locked eyes with the blue of his irises that never failed to temper her fiery spirit. His face was pulled in a frown, watching her expressions so closely she felt exposed under it. Like he could read her soul.
Toph’s voice cut through the tension, only voicing out what everyone was too scared to say out loud. “Well, what if Aang doesn't come back?”
“Sozin's Comet is arriving and our destinies are upon us”, replied Iroh. “Aang will face the Fire Lord”, he spoke gravely.
“When I was a boy, I had a vision that I would one day take Ba Sing Se”, he told, looking at each of them. “Only now do I see that my destiny is to take it back from the Fire Nation, so the Earth Kingdom can be free again”
“That's why you gathered the members of the White Lotus”, realised Suki.
Iroh only nodded and regarded Zuko with a firm look. “Zuko, you must return to the Fire Nation, so that when the Fire Lord falls, you can assume the throne and restore peace and order”
Zuko stared at him silently. Sokka took her hand in his.
“But Azula will be there, waiting for you”, he added carefully.
Zuko inhaled sharply, and nodded. “I can handle Azula”, he assured.
Iroh stopped him. “Not alone. You'll need help”
He sighed. He didn't take that in account. His head snapped up, and his eyes bore on Katara. “Katara, how would you like to help me put Azula in her place”
“It would be my pleasure—”
A dry chuckle escaped her lips before Katara could finish her sentence. Everyone froze and turned to look at her.
She was kneeling on the ground, hands gripping her knees until her knuckles went white. Her head was bowed forward, her long hair cascading to shield her face from them. The small fire among them, meant to warm their food, suddenly went up a few feet. Everyone fell back or scrambled away. Even Sokka. He let go of her hand to take a few steps back from her and the wild flame crackling threateningly.
“Woah!”, exclaimed Suki.
Katara shrieked, while Toph widened her eyes at the sudden heat on her skin.
Iroh and Zuko remained in their spots. They didn't bat an eye when the flame grew rapidly and when its harmless red colour was stripped away to a bright blue.
“Put her in her place?”, she scoffed with a cold grin. The siblings’ eyes locked, and all the warmth and shared weight they held was gone. Hers held instead anger, disbelief, betrayal all at once. Sharp face hardened by the blue shadows cast by the fire column among them. His were hard, narrowed.
“You know we have to”, he stated.
“No! We don't!”, she spat out. “You're oh so casually talking about restraining her! My sister! Our sister!”
“She wouldn't cooperate”
“How can you be so sure? Huh?”, she replied, muscles straining and shaking from the effort of not lashing out.
“Azula's crazy!”, he hissed.
“So am I!”, she scoffed out. “But you took me in, didn't you? Eh, Zuzu?”
Zuko shook his head, staring at his sister with disbelief. “You're different”
“What makes you say that?”, she fired back. “Me and her are not that different, and it's about time you acknowledge it”
He heard enough. He had enough. “Would you stop?”, he yelled frustrated. “Azula's too corrupted by our father’s influence to come to her senses right now. It's always been like that. And it's about time you come to terms with it”
The way he spoke to her, the hard–as–stone expression he had made her shut up. The intensity with which Zuko was glaring down at her forced her to lower her eyes. The finality in his tone made cold shivers run down her back. For a split second Ozai flashed before her eyes instead of Zuko, and it scared her to her core. Her blue flames died down instantly.
He noticed it. Even when he was fed up with her, he was still tuned in to her reactions. He saw clearly how she recoiled at him. How the hardness in his voice seemed to straighten her posture and glue her eyes to the ground. He hadn't meant to terrify her. Never his intentions. He gulped and took an unsteady breath to compose himself.
When he looked back up at her, his eyes softened. “We play by my rules. You can come with us. Try to convince her. If that doesn't work, I'll step in, and you better not stop me”
She remained glued on her spot. Everything he said sounded muffled, like he was underwater. Or maybe she was the one underwater. By the way the air seemed to weigh her down, it sure felt like it. She tried to fight back. But it was of no use. They all had this fixed vision of Azula where she's ruthless and heartless. But her sister wasn't like that in her eyes. It absolutely made her furious that they wouldn't just give her a chance.
And now her friends were staring up at her, standing shocked many feet behind her. Weren't they supposed to stand beside you at all times? And Sokka? He looked conflicted. He'd seen her lose all control, and for that he seemed wordless like the others. But she hoped that he, at least, would not immediately jump and point his finger at her. He loved her. She loved him. He'd still stand by her, hopefully.
Wordlessly, without sparing another glance at the figure of her guilty brother, she stood up and stomped her way to her tent. A clean exit, no shouts or dramatics thrown around. Her friends just watched her storm away, while Sokka jumped immediately to his feet, ready to follow her. However Zuko stopped him with a call of his name.
“Sokka”, called out Zuko. “Stay. We need you here”
“She needs me too!”, he argued, throwing his arms in the air.
“She needs to be alone with her thoughts. Trust me, it's what she needs”
Iroh set down his bowl and looks straight at Sokka. “What do you think you'll do while they handle Azula?”
Sokka held Zuko's gaze with his own challenging one before averting them, sitting back down with a defeated sigh. “Well… I think that even if we don't know where Aang is…”, he took a quick glance at the tent where YN disappeared. “We need to to everything we can to stop the airship fleet”
Toph piped up, gray gaze stuck below her on the ground. “And that means, when Aang does face the Fire Lord, we will be right there if he needs us”
Everyone shared determined looks. They were all on the same page. That day, things will get done, and the war will finally end once for all.
Soon, preparations for each trip had been done, and each group was set to leave. Sokka rode with Toph and Suki on a giant eel–hound, with only a map to guide them to their destination.
Katara and Zuko took Appa, rations enough for three persons for the journey to the Fire Nation packed safely on the saddle along with their weapons. Iroh was bidding his last goodbyes to Zuko, smiling warmly at his nephew, reassuring him of his missions.
They were ready to go. While, back in the tent, YN had come to a dark realisation. They were right. Azula wouldn't have backed down, ever. Not even if their father himself told her to. Azula was too power–drunk at that point. Nothing would've made stray from the plan fixed in her head. And that made her heart drown. Drown in an internal, black ocean ‘cause she knew she had probably lost her sister. And with Sokka leaving to battle with a whole Fire Navy fleet didn't make her feel any good. By now, she was certain she was about to lose everything dear to her.
Once she had swallowed the bitterness sat snugly in her throat, she forced herself to act. Azula was probably going to fall, with her unable to do anything about it, as it was what Iroh had called ‘the greater good’. The least she could do was be there for her sibling when it happened. Show support while her world’s strings were cut sharply in front of her, with her own siblings holding the daggers firmly.
She strode to where Appa was about to take off, Zuko at the reins with a quiet focused air to him. “I’m not gonna help you harm her”
His focus was broken instantly. He glanced down with relief and the leftover rage from their argument. He nodded shortly, watched her climb up on the bison and settle down. “Can we go now?”
All in all, the sibling trip wasn't all that bad. If you're willing to close an eye on the whole taking down your twin sister, of course. And, also, the fact that Katara was crashing it.
After YN’s tiny little scene back at Old Camp, Katara hadn't really spared her a single glance or word. Either she looked ahead, at the horizon stretching in front of them, or she made small talk with Zuko. She was of the opinion that her rightfully anger burst plus all that scorching hot fire almost burning her to a crisp had impressioned Miss Waterbender. It was impressive. She must have looked pretty badass.
The scenery right under their eyes was breathtaking. Reds, oranges and yellows melted together in the sky, tiny stars sparkling here and there. The tension on Appa’s saddle could’ve been cut with a sword. She had attempted to leave a harmless comment on the picture–like surroundings, something along the lines of the usual weather talk one made to break the ice. She didn't believe it possible, but Katara’s face got noticeably harder. Apparently a girl wasn't free to appreciate the beauty of the sky only because it came from the comet her father intended to use to conquer the world. She was starting to see how things worked there.
Katara took the place beside Zuko, at the front. “Zuko, don't worry. We can take Azula”
“I'm not worried about her”, he denied quietly. “I'm worried about Aang”, he corrected. “What if he doesn't have the guts to take out my father? What… What if he loses?”
“Aang won't lose. He's gonna come back”, replied firmly Katara.
“Yeah, well… He better”, she piped up from her spot behind them, arms resting on the edges of the saddle.
“I said he will”, snapped Katara.
YN returned her hard stare. Miss Waterbender was starting to get on her nerves, and she already was quite upset. “You'll watch your mouth around me, waterbender”
Katara then scoffed incredulously. “I'm sorry—?”
Zuko turned sharply to both of them. “—Enough. It's not the time”. He successfully stopped them before the row before it could escalate further. Silence fell over them, and only the distant sound of the Comet soaring through the sky was heard.
Until, they finally reached their destination.
From above, she watched her sister’s coronation taking place. The patio was completely empty. Just Azula, kneeling down, her head bent facing the ground and five Fire Sages dressed ceremoniously behind her. Her throat went dry at the sight.
She could hear the declaration going on on the ground. The High Fire Sage holding above his head the crown piece, bigger than hers or Zuko's. She recognised it as Ozai’s.
“By decree of Phoenix King Ozai, I now crown you Fire Lord…”
Azula's glare met his instantly after sensing his hesitation “What are you waiting for? Do it!”, she snarked viciously.
Appa’s grunt cut through the air before he could reply. Azula looked up and watched with a frown as Appa landed a few feet under them. Zuko stood straight on his head, and stared directly at his sister.
“Sorry, but you're not gonna become Fire Lord today!”, he projected his voice and jumped down. “I am”
Azula burst into a cold laughter. It hit YN straight at her heart. That was not her sister. Horror flashed in her amber eyes. Azula's appearance was unkept. Her hair chopped off weirdly, her face looked exhausted, the makeup applied hastily, the ceremonial robe thrown over carelessly. Was she already far too gone? She had been late. It was just like Zuko had told her. Their father had corrupted Azula to the bone. She couldn't stand to make herself known just yet.
“You're hilarious!”, wheezed out Azula.
Katara stepped forward. “And you're going down”
Azula stood up. “You want to be Fire Lord? Fine. Let's settle this”, her crooked grin vanished completely. “Just you and me, brother, the showdown that was always meant to be, Agni Kai!”
“You're on”
Katara widened her eyes at him “What are you doing? She's playing with you!”, she hissed. “She knows she can't take both of us, so she's trying to separate us”
“I know”, he replied. “But I can take her this time”
“But even you admitted to your uncle that you'd need help facing Azula!”
“There's something off about her”, he narrowed his eyes. “I can't explain it, but she's slipping”
He finally turned to Katara. “And this way, no one else has to get hurt”
“Don't be silly, Zuko”, spoke up YN out of the blue, coming out of her hideout little by little. “You'll both get hurt”
Amber and blue eyes settled on her rising figure. “It’s like you said Power’s gotten to her head. If she was merciless before, what's holding her back this time? With the Comet’s influence flowing in her veins?
She walked up to them. “She can bend lightnings, Zuko. We got taught by the Imperial Benders. Can you?”
He sighed, and really looked at his little sister. It still weirded him out, how alike they were. Here he was, about to fight another YN in an Agni Kai. “I can't, no. But I won't let it stop me”
“It's risky. I told you, Zuko, I'm not harming Azula”
“I know, don't worry. I won't force you to”, he replied softly right after.
“But… I won't hesitate to protect you”
He looked into her eyes, and found nothing but sincerity. “As I will”
Just a few minutes later, Azula and Zuko were facing each other, ready to pounce to attack. She and Katara stood away from the fight, far enough to avoid stray tongues of fire and close enough to jump in if things went downhill.
“I'm sorry if it has to end this way, brother”, grinned Azula, one arm raised over her head and her legs bent. Her eyes then fell upon her sister in the distance, and her smirk turned bitter. While her heart was swallowed down her throat. “You took little YN from me too, huh?”
“No, I haven't”
“Lies!”, yelled out Azula, her eyes closed to a slit, swiftly kicking a spurge of blue fire at him. Zuko’s own jet promptly met hers in the middle, and suddenly a massive wall of wild fire rose up. Blue and red battled roughly, exploding loudly. As soon as it rose up, it disappeared, and Azula wasted no time to throw fire kicks at him. From outside, the fight looked breathtaking just as horrible. Swift, blue tongues of azure flames approached Zuko.
YN stood frozen. Unable to jump in action. Unable to think straight. Never had she felt so sick in the stomach. Her heartbeat felt so loud and quick in her throat, it seemed to hammer incessantly in her brain. Her stomach hurt like someone had punched her in the gut. It physically hurt her to witness her siblings fight. And it was no bickering. An Agni Kai.
She couldn't get her to watch them kicking flames at each other, but she also couldn't get her eyes to avert from the scene. Devastatingly beautiful. Damaging the surroundings. The fight had expanded like wild fire. Fire rose up everywhere. Azula was driven by revenge, rage and sheer madness. Zuko was driven by the desire to put a full stop to the war. No one seemed to have the upper hand.
Until one of Zuko's kicks hit bullseye, and Azula fell to the ground, grunting and rolling away. YN’s breath caught in her throat. Panting and breathing heavily, Azula got to her feet, and glared at him through her chopped hair.
“No lightning today?”, he taunted. “What's a matter? Afraid I'll redirect it?”
“I'll show you lightning!”, she yelled out, looking extremely crazed out. Lightnings shot out her fingers, frizzing and crackling loudly in the otherwise silent city. Zuko had already got into position. Legs bent and arms raised and palms open. Azula seemed ready to strike, but she knew better. The moment the lightning shot out, everything moved in slow mo. Azula aiming right behind Zuko, where Katara was standing. Zuko running to protect her, right in between her and the lightning. And then, the lightning hitting Zuko straight in the chest. Zuko falling to the ground limply.
A guttural scream left her lips. Her limbs sprung to action, boots stomping hard on the gravel to reach his body while tears clouded her vision. She ran and ran, as quick as she could, but it wasn't enough. Too far, she was too far. Desperate sobs tore raw from her throat, tripping and falling, body shaking uncontrollably.
And when Katara tried to tend to him, set her foot down to run to him, lightning landed only a few inches from her. A warning. Katara had to defend herself from Azula's attacks, barely avoiding them.
“I'd really rather our family physician look after little Zuzu, if you don't mind”, cracked out Azula.
Meanwhile, Katara hid behind a column, swallowing and breathing heavily. There wasn't much she could do. Her every single counter attack was useless against Azula's powered up bending. Blue flames chased her around as she ran away, and eventually, she fell with a grunt.
“There you are, filthy peasant”, sauntered over Azula, index and middle finger already raised to strike another lightning. She smirked down at Katara, electricity buzzing lowly on the tips of her finger. And when she was ready to release the lightning, a raw, loud, guttural yell of her name made it die down.
“Azula!”
Almost as if taken out of her bloodthirst trance, Azula slowly turned around and locked eyes with her sister. YN was barely standing in front of Zuko's limp body, tears stained her cheeks and lips stretched into a frown. It had been a few months since they were together, when she had tricked Ozai and her to join the Avatar’s side. And now, they met once again. Facing each other, both exhausted with rage simmering inside, both at their worst.
Azula took a few hesitant steps towards her sister, body shaking and voice trembling when calling out to her.
“YN…”
“What did you do, Azula?”, she fired back, her own voice breaking.
“I…”
“Zuko's hurt. What if he's dead? Azula, what then?”, tears started flowing out of her bloodshot eyes again.
“You're here… ”
“I had just got him back, Azula”, she pleaded. “And now…”, a broken sob tore through her.
Azula took small steps towards her, quietly watching her sister breaking down because of herself. She'd done it again, she thought. She managed to push away yet another loved one.
In a few more strides, the two sisters stood face to face. Stark was the contrast between them now. One consumed by power and lust, and the other by grief and regrets. Their souls had never looked more different.
“You ran from me”, muttered quietly Azula.
“I ran from father”, she corrected instantly. “Never from you. I don't stand by father's beliefs, Azzie. I'm not like you. I couldn't stand to turn a blind eye to the abominations father was causing anymore”
“So you joined the Avatar, huh? Turned your back to your own family. Followed through that traitor’s steps”, came Azula's half–hearted scoff.
“… I did.”
“Nice of you to show up to my coronation, sister”
“It's not too late, Azzie”, she pleaded softly. “I'd never hurt you, and you'd never hurt me. We're too interwoven for that”, she cupped Azula's right cheek, thumb rubbing away the dirt, while her sister stared quietly at her. She could feel all her cracks on her skin, the pain coming out of them, and she was desperately trying to heal them away.
Seconds passed, and after overcoming any vestige of hesitation, Azula leant into her hand and relaxed into her hold. “… It is late”, whispered Azula.
“It's not, I promise”
“Can't you see, YN? I'm out of my mind. I don't feel like myself anymore. I saw mom today”
That took her by surprise. “… Mom?”
Azula nodded shortly. She was about to add something else, when suddenly a stream of water engulfed her and trapped her in the ice.
YN’s head snapped up, eyes wide with surprise and newfound rage landing on Katara's figure a few feet away, her arms still raised. She felt a white hot anger bubbling inside her, looking at Katara. She strode over to them, a heavy chain dragging behind her as she held in one hand. The only sight had made YN jump into a fighting stance.
“Katara. Don't”, she warned quietly, raged amber eyes locked onto her like a predator on its prey.
“I have to, YN! We can't trust her”
Her vision turned red. “She was about to surrender, you filthy peasant!”, she yelled out and sliced her arm in the air to throw a flame at her.
Though, Katara was much quicker than her, and bended a puddle of water around her body too. “I'm sorry. But I'm not risking another war because of you”
She snarled and protested, trashing her body around in vain. The ice bit at her skin, while she was forced to watch helplessly as Katara chained her sister up. She could feel her body weakening by the second. Perhaps it was the frost, or perhaps the roller coaster of emotions of the recent days finally catching up to her. But what she knew was that, little by little, her vision blacked, and her senses fell into slumber.
She woke up with a groan.
Her head hammered loudly and painfully. The light was too bright, and it was rather challenging to keep them open. Suddenly, she felt a present by her side, the warmth emanating from its body oddly comforting. Warm, calloused hands gently cupped her cheeks and eased her eyes open.
When she had been used to the light— filtering from rich red drapes, she noticed— she was able to recognise the presence. Sokka. He looked like he hadn't slept in days, and maybe he hadn't. He was watching her closely, searching for any sign of discomfort in any form.
“… Sokka?”, her throat felt sandy, as if she had eaten gravel for breakfast.
A smile was quick to make its way onto his face. “Hey, love”, he muttered. “How we feeling today, Princess?”
“Like a shit”
He chuckled lowly. “That's great”
He watched as she slowly took in her surroundings. “Are these… My chambers?”
He nodded. “Yep. Pretty fancy, by the way”, he scratched his head. “Who needs gold on their covers?”
“I do. Can't rest properly without it”
“Oh, right. Silly me. Gold makes me sleep better too”
She tried to chuckle, but instead she burst into a fit of cough.
“Hey, hey there. Take it easy”
“What happened?”, she asked as soon as she was breathing properly again.
“We won, love. Long story short, Aang took Ozai's bending away, so now he's just a random with weirdly luscious hair”, he explained.
“Won? War’s over?”, her lower lip quivered.
“Yep! Finally at peace”, he grinned. “You should’ve seen me! There were a lot of booms! and kabooms! and a whole fleet of airships taken down by me”
She smiled at him, and teased him. “Yeah? Such a—”, then, suddenly, a memory flashed in her mind.
Azula aiming right behind Zuko, where Katara was standing. Zuko running to protect her, right in between her and the lightning. And then, the lightning hitting Zuko straight in the chest. Zuko falling to the ground limply.
“Zuko—!”, she started to panic.
Sokka stroked her cheeks instantly. “YN, hey, look at me”, he said firmly. “He's okay. Katara healed him up. He's all good now. Still grumpy and all. I promise”
That calmed her down in under a second. The sincere tone in his voice, the gentle, deep blue eyes she loved. It was enough to put her panic at bay. “You'll see him later, okay? As soon as you don't look like a ghost anymore”
She nodded, satisfied, and let him hold her close. She couldn't help, but let her thoughts stray to her sister. At this time, she must had been locked up somewhere. In a dark, cold place lit only by a mere candle. Maybe with her arms restrained to prevent her from bending. Alone. Hurt.
She could hear Sokka rambling about something to her, probably telling her what she missed since she blacked out, but her mind tuned him off. The thought of knowing her twin to be in such conditions left a bitter taste in her mouth, one that didn't simply go away after swallowing it down. But then, Sokka said something that caught her attention.
“Coronation’s been keeping Zuko on his feet, lately. Preparations and meetings left and right. While I've been living my best life in the palace—”
“Coronation?”
“Yeah! Buddy'll be crowned Fire Lord today”, he explained. “Actually, you've been worrying him nonstop! He was stressing out about you still being out cold and not being able to attend. I swear I've seen a wrinkle under that mop of hair”
“I wanna be present”
“Oh, you'll be! You'll have a front row seat, don't worry”, he winked.
The next few hours passed by in a blur. Physicians checking up on her every ten minutes, maids rushing to take her measurements, bathing her and dressing her. She vividly remembered a maid brushing a knot out of her hair quite harshly, too. And before she could blink, she was sat on a red cushion just a fly of stairs under her brother making his speech. It still felt unreal. The war was over. Her father chained. The Four Nations standing together watching Zuko promise a period of peace and prosperity. Her last memory was standing just where the crowd was in that moment holding her sister close to her.
She was took out of her own bubble of thoughts when Zuko called out her name. She looked up to him, and saw him already looking at her with the proud grin only an older brother could muster.
“Finally, I'd like to call my sister, Princess YN, to join me”
Her eyebrows shot up. She glanced around, only seeing tiny faces staring up at her expectantly. From the corner of my eyes, she noticed Uncle Iroh smiling at her warmly, encouraging her to join up Zuko. With her previous hesitation partly reassured, she stood and dusted off her robe— old habits die hard— and picked it up. She made her way up with her chin held high, and her shoulders squared back. If you asked Sokka, she looked exactly like their first meeting. Just as proud and graceful. The sight made him fall for her further.
Sokka cheered the loudest in the crowd. "That's my girlfriend, everyone!"
Many around him threw annoyed glances and glares, someone shouting back "Good for you, bud! Now shut your damn mouth!" , but Sokka was over the Moon. He could see the small smile forming on her lips at his antics, and that was worth every insult he'd get.
When she reached up and stood beside her brother, Zuko signalled a Fire Sage to hand him a golden hair piece, identical to his in every way. Her amber eyes widened slightly.
“My sister wasn't lost like I was before meeting Avatar Aang. She knew what she had to do, and when the right time came, she did it”, he started another speech. “In the shadows of the palace, she defied our father, Fire Lord Ozai, and chose the world instead of her own Nation. She taught the Avatar firebending alongside me, and saw with her own eyes what making the difference meant”
“I felt at ease, safe, knowing I had my sister by my side. There were times where I thought I had lost her permanently. I'd be lost without my little sister”, he smiled warmly. “And now, I clearly can see that her place is right beside me, leading and guiding the Fire Nation into its long waited redemption”
He raised the hair piece in the air. “For that, today, in front of everyone of you, I'm doing something our Nation has yet to witness”
He turned to her. “Kneel, Princess YN”, he stated solemnly, taking her by surprise. The whole speech had her brain work slower, actually. Had he lost his mind? Did madness run in the family? Would it come for her too, one day?
Zuko cleared his throat, and nodded her to kneel down. With slight hesitation, she knelt on the smooth marble floor, and looked straight ahead of her with her eyes sparkling.
“I, Fire Lord Zuko, crown Princess YN Fire Lady, as my right hand”
Then, the weight of the gold settled steadily on her head. When Zuko gently helped her up, a deafening round of cheers cut through the solemn atmosphere, the loudest obviously coming from her friends. That, she could swear, was the happiest she'd ever been.
Or perhaps it was right the night of her Coronation— she had gotten used to it pretty quickly, that Zuko had threatened multiple times to take her title away if she didn't wipe the grin off her face— when Sokka showed up with a traditional betrothal Water Tribe necklace, promising her forever when the time was right.
Hi! Can we pls get a part three to azulas twin x sokka where its like super dramatic during either during the invasion or final battle? Maybe its after zuko and reader and katara fight azula and win and her and sokka meet up or something? Idk something dramatic. Im feeling extra.
HIIIIIIII!!! first of all, I'd like to apologise for keeping you waiting since the 15th of june 😭😭 i got demotivated along the way, and completely dropped it to take my mind off it with other small projects.

Truth to be said, she only accepted the job because of Remus.
Being a barista wasn't by any means her dream job— far from it, actually. She only needed a job while getting a PhD in Math to cover rent and groceries costs, but Remus had managed to catch her attention.
From the very moment she stepped in a café for a simple cappuccino and saw him behind the counter doing god–knows–what with the coffee machine, she was left stunned. Mesmerised, even.
His tall frame, kinda lanky but somehow managed to have such broad shoulders had her in a chokehold. And those hair— God, she could tell it was so soft even from outside the bar and through the glass. How desperately she wanted to be able to run her hand through his fluffy–looking chocolate hair.
Not to mention the scars that adorned his peaceful face. Behind each scar was a story, a memory, and she was so terribly and deeply enamored with him, that she wished to hear every single one.
Hence, when she learnt that they were hiring, she unhesitatingly jumped in the opportunity. Getting a job where her newest crush also worked at? Killing two birds with one stone.
The prospect of having him so close to her, talking to her, teaching her how to be a perfect barista with that scar–covered face and those chocolate eyes made her weak in the knees.
God forbid a girl dreams over a boy.
That cute barista still hadn't left her mind. He was like printed permanently. Glued. He showed no intention of leaving her alone for a long time. She couldn't shake him out of her thoughts even if she wanted to. He had complete control of her mind, had her wrapped his finger, even though they hadn't properly met yet.
Perhaps love at first sight existed in real life too.
Working with Remus was just as dreamy as she had initially thought.
He was an angel with her. Always so patient and kind. Didn't mind showing her multiple times a day how to make a macchiato or reminding her what flavours of croissant they sold.
He knew it was a lost cause to try to get her to understand everything.
They became fast friends, spending their breaks together, spilling tea and having light–hearted charts over stolen goods from the pastry showcase and the espressos and lattes he had made.
From time to time, she attempted to flirt with him. She laughed at his jokes, brushed her hand against his at every given chance, complimented his looks like there was no tomorrow.
Either way, it all was of no use. He was a lost cause. He was too oblivious for his own good. There was no possible way to confess her love to him, he would certainly have turned it into some friendly comment, brushing it off without a second thought.
However, she was headstrong about confessing.
If the traditional methods didn't work with him, she would find a creative and unique way of doing it.
For that, she decided to arrive at work a bit earlier than usual— perhaps too early, but she was a girl in love and on a mission.
As she stepped in, the smell of coffee and freshly baked croissants and cakes met her, and she instantly smelt Remus. He had this smell of chocolate and coffee around him, that she had learnt to love and cherish over the time working together.
She took a breath and took confident steps towards the staff room, leaving her coat and scarf on the little hanger by the door and retrieving her beige apron, decorated with various pins— something she had deliberately and shamelessly copied off him— and tied it on, already in the mindset of a perfect charismatic barista.
In order to complete her love confession gift, she had begged, and paid, the cashier boy— her sweet, nerdy Noah— to cover for her while she was working on the surprise.
He was such a cutie and honestly her unofficial son. An eighteen year old trying to balance his last year of highschool and his job at the café. Apparently, he was saving for college, Caltech or Yale. He acted like a total sweetheart and such an innocent boy, and he sure looked the part, too.
She had taken an instant liking to him, took him under her wing and looked out to him.
With her spot covered, she rolled up her sleeves and got to work. She wasn't an efficient coffee art maker by any means. Far from it. Although, for Remus she was willing to give it a try, even if it meant making a mess all over the counter.
She gathered his favourite cup he drank from during their break–chats, a bottle of milk and a jug to pour the white liquid into the latte cup filled with his go–to order; a Chocolate Cold Brew.
She knew that was not how lattes worked. That much she knew.
But she wanted to make his favourite drink and simultaneously make it pretty, so why not doing latte art on a Chocolate Cold Brew? It's not like law enforcement agents would come knocking on her door if she did. Kinda like poetic licenses. No poet was ever arrested because they didn't respect grammar and syntax rules.
So while his drink was in the process of making in the coffee machine, she took a piece of parchment from her apron’s pocket and wrote a little ‘poem’, in hopes that he wouldn't interpret it as some request to upgrade their friendship from ‘good friends’ to ‘super duper best mates’.
He was well capable of it.
About twenty minutes later, Remus' shift started, and after half an hour, it was time for their break.
Remus was already reaching to make their gossip drinks, however, she stopped him in time, placing a hand on his arm.
“I've already got it covered for us. My treat today!”, she winked at him, eyes sparkling mischievously.
Remus looks at her, half amused and half scared for his life. “Oh… You sure? You want me to check them?”, he asks softly, subtly trying to prevent some kind of poison or expired milk to be inside their cups, not sure if he was willing to trust her coffee–making skills.
“I'm sure! Cmon, don't be a kid and get your pretty ass to our spot”, she insisted, grin widening and eyes shining brighter.
She grabbed his hand and dragged him to the staff room, her heart beating loudly in her chest at the prospect of finally confessing her love for her coworker.
She took him to their gossip–spot. A circular wooden table with two cushioned stools in the corner, by the window. Placed on top of it, there was the tray she had prepared in advance with their coffees and two slices of freshly baked lemon drizzle cake.
She took her seat on her usual stool, watching him doing the same while eyeing curiously the little folded note by his cup. He threw her a confused glance, silently asking for an explanation. But when he got none, he went to grab the note, unfolding it with care, eyes scanning the words written in black ink.
“Could this be love at first sight? Or should I walk by again for you to notice?”, he read out loud the words carefully written in a pretty handwriting.
He moved his utterly confused gaze to her nervous one, furrowing his eyebrows when he didn't find a sense to the sentences on the note. “What's this supposed to mean?”
At his question, she let out an incredulous scoff and leaned over. “Remus”, she said incredulously. He couldn't be that daft, could he?
“What?”, he retorted oblivious.
“It's a love note”, she explained gesturing to it. But he was supposed to already know that. It was rather obvious, wasn't it?
“Oh”, he blinked. “From who?”
She widened her eyes, now feeling more amused than anything else. “Me, dummy!”
“You?”
“Uh huh!”, she leaned back, and crossed her arms over her chest, looking at him with the exact same amused expression painted on her face.
Remus' ears flushed softly, a bashful expression overtaking his features. He cleared his throat and took a deep breath before muttering under his breath, words barely audible for her to grasp clearly, gaze promptly avoiding hers.
“Come again?”
“You don't have to…”, he murmured slightly louder, heart skipping a few beats.
“To what?”, she urged him on.
“Walk by again…”, he waited for a heartbeat before speaking up again. “... I already like you”
It was time for her heart to skip several beats, voice abandoning her and all other words fleeing her mind.
Only after a few seconds of silence she was capable of getting a few words out of her lips, a hint of a playful smile making its way on her face.
“That being the case…”, she started, her mind still trying to process the situation. “… Go out with me?”, she finally asked, eyes glittering with hope.
His whole face turned beet red and nodded quietly, the gesture partly hidden by his cup of Chocolate Cold Brew he was using to hide the obvious blush painting his cheeks. He took a small sip, feeling shy about the whole ordeal, but he was immediately taken aback from the taste of his coffee.
“It's actually good”, he stated, surprise evident in his voice.
“And you even doubted it?”, she exclaimed, pretending to be offended, before exploding in a fit of giggles.
He soon joined her, the sound of her laugh contagious, bringing a smile on his face.
Perhaps she had just found the perfect candidate to share rent and grocery costs with.
